Very nice restoration,really enjoy your videos,I inherited some old tools and many are probably a 100 years old and many from long gone UK manufacturers and I'm tempted to do some restoration on some of them,Where I live in the Uk we are having a heat wave,blue skies every day,lawns are turning brown,I never thought I'd say this but I'd really like to see a downpour of rain.Many thanks for the great videos.

Hello from England love your projects and have been inspired to buy some old tools myself to restore. So far with varying results made a fair job of an old saw but ruined an old hammer of my grandfathers with an angle grinder, but hey I spent my whole career in a suit as a sales rep. My father was a centre lathe turner and could make all sorts of one-off parts for machines but I became a white-collar worker. The internets great for learning from experts like yourself. Just an honest hard working guy who passes on his lifetime of experience best wishes and thanks,

Hello Tony! That is awesome!!! I promise you that these skills will come very quickly! I'm sure your Grandfather would be happy you gave it a shot! We all have to ruin a few projects before we get into the groove! Some projects are harder then others... Some great projects are "G" Clamps, Adjustable spanners, Auto wrenches... They all are much more forgiving and still rewarding!!!!!! Keep up the great work!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!

Funny - I thought I wasn't too into this particular restoration but enjoyed this project a lot. Not having any kind of a lathe (maybe another year), right now one of my favorite tools to use is my tap & die set. I don't know what it is, but fixing either a screw hole or a bolt is just really a pleasure. Maybe if I had a lathe I'd never come in from my shop! Very nice job.

Hello Mike!!!! When I was a boy my late Father told me a story of how when he was in the Army one night pulling guard duty it started raining heavy, he put on his poncho and pulled the hood up over his helmet and stood in the rain for hours, he said "I was warm and dry in the poncho as the sound of the rain hitting my helmet became very relaxing" I never forgot that story and since then have always loved the rain! Thanks very much!!!!

Thank you for sharing that with me! My dad is tough as nails. He just turned 80 in March. We had a big party for him in Florida. Sadly, on Fathers Day, he suffered a massive stroke. He is in rehab now. He cannot speak or feed himself. I'm heartbroken. He just mailed me a box of fatwood (for starting fires, I hike and camp a lot) And in the box he put 2 antique draw blades that belonged to my grandfather. I will forever cherish them. My dad LOVES his tools. "Take care of your tools son, they will always take care of you" -he always says. I Love your channel. Really helps me unwind and relax. And I learn something new every time. Thank you again! -Mike

Wish I could send some of this rain we have been getting here in central FL back home to the UK right now, my home town moors have been on fire for 2 weeks. Stormed here every day for over a month and my yard looks like a swamp. My dad was a watchmaker and had a P & B jewellers vice. I just finished restoring it myself about 6 months ago. It is missing the free spinning plate on the clamp. Not sure how to fix this but it’ll come to me one day. I’m currently in the process of restoring his old bench vice he built 70 years ago. This is the third restoration of that bench vice since I’ve had it. I’m in my sixties and have used this vice since I left home at 18.

I just hit eBay and ordered my first antique tool, a Sterling no1 Bicycle Wrench circa 1900 for $15. It looks to be in really good shape. I will take a swing at it with the small wire brush on the new 16 speed drill press I bought for $80 yesterday. It's pedal operated which is very cool. I haven't seen you restore one of those, a video on one would be pretty cool.

Some historical perspective: on June 3, 1909, the day after your vise's birthday, the Wright brothers traveled to Fort Myer, Virginia, with the improved Wright Military Flyer, which passed the U.S. Army's tests. Shortly after your vise turned 60, a man walked on the moon. And that moonwalk was 49 years ago now, so no wonder it needed a few touch-ups; it needs to look good for its 110th birthday next year.

Hi Scout! GREAT job!! You were on the right track with the japanning....but...it is usually done three or four times, and between each layering, the objects were rubbed down with a mixture of something...Im not sure what, but anyway, the mixture contained pumice....then it was baked between each coating. When your vise came out lumpy, that was right....the japanning would after the final layer would be smoothed again with the pumice mix and cleaned and then coated. Again, Im not sure if the final coating layer was shellac or varnish. You were on thebright track. The spray paint was easier though!! GREAT job!!

Hello Bob, With some tools I don't try to restore them to original. I remember years back I had a pair of pliers that were chipped, I ground them down until they were an odd shape, like the nose of a Dolphin, well that pliers was great!!! After that I customized a few more tools and really enjoyed the outcome on most. One thing for sure is lots of times things are done for cost reasons and not functionality. =) Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Btw....One of THE great things about these is that they can be mounted on top of a 2x2 post or similar and then clamped into a regular woodworking vice. Then you have a great position at face height and with good access all around to work on for instance a carving.

5/16 18 is probably the size that hole was. It’s 5/16 18 for coarse and 5/16 24 is fine thread. That’s a neat little vise! Would be great for holding small engine carburetors under your magnifier at you’re carb desk. Would be perfect to hold them while cleaning jets and passages in the carb body. What do ya know! I’ve got an excuse to buy another tool! 😉

Hello Buck! Those vises many times had unusual thread pitches, this was one of them. Like Starrett many vise companies used special taps for their clamp on vises! I don't know why they did that! I have all the common NF and NC taps but when I get an oddball sometimes I just drill out the base and re-tap it. Thanks so much!!

I found a Reed pipe vice from 1914 in great shape. Looked on Ebay theres one there fir I think a $1000 and that one has two of the square bvolts ans washers missing. Mine is complete. Should I clean it up and polish it or leave it grungy? I'd sure like to make some money off this thing! Thanks for the most inspiring videos Scout!

Hello George!! That Reed is one awesome Vise!!!!! The problem with those older vises were they were made so well that eventually they weren't selling anymore because they never broke!!! Built too well!!!!! The question is Restore or Not? If you have no intentions on keeping it then I say leave it as is... People love original Vises to buy.. However if you plan no keeping it then make it beautiful!!!! Hope that helps!! Thanks!!!!

LOL!!! You know I was thinking of how I could form a fender washer with the Dake when I found this little brass scrap! To be honest I have another identical vise that is also missing the base plate and I really think the plate has to be thick and strong for optimum performance! Thanks again!!
@jusb1066
@jusb1066 6 жыл бұрын
ive formed one before! from thick sheet steel, using a socket as the outer former, and a bolt with a nut on so it wont go through the hole, in my vice! would have been much better in a press
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 6 жыл бұрын
That is an awesome tip! I saved some thick walled pipe and old tubing for just those uses! The only problem is peening over the inside of the threaded part so the washer won't fall off! It has to be assembled before it's peened over. That's a puzzle to solve! Lol
@jusb1066
@jusb1066 6 жыл бұрын
split the end with a small cross before you put it together, then use the thread itself on a bit of metal to push the end into a mushroom, its own press, or if you put a hole in the end, it peens over easy with a punch, or a pointed anvil to press the end into

Dry lamp black pigment in shellac is the answer! Doesn't need much pigment though. Not questioning the virtue of your work but the screw on those vices was normally bent into a triangle or circle to form the thumbscrew and the swivel was a cheap pressing :)

Hey @@ScoutCrafter, you can make lamp black for pennies. Just take a piece of clean metal and hold it in a paraffin candle's flame - scrape the soot off into a container and you have your lamp black.

Nice restore, is it me or does the lower part of the vise, where you made the screw in look a little bent, maybe just me. But the anyways good project I can think of a few good things to do with a small vise like that like Models, small Taking, just anything small .....

Hello Abdulah! Wow! You've got keen eyes! I think the vise has a slight upward bend to it as they compensated for flex when under a load! If it were straight it would not have the same strength! Very observant!!!! Thanks very much!!!

got a small vise right next to me, the only thing i have trouble with is making the jaws match so to high spots, who ever had it before me really screw it up. i got back to around i think .05 i use a file and feeler gauge, the other trick i use to find hot spot is just sharpie it and then clamp hard on a peice of wood. maybe some day ill go and drill and tap for new jaws like lead,brass,leather.
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 6 жыл бұрын
Hello David!! Yes! many times the jaws on these vises are a little cocked because they just don't have the mass of the bigger vises... Usually it don't effect performance too much because the built in "slop" helps the vise clamp down on the project! The funny thing is that these mini-vises can cost more then their larger versions!!!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!

I have a few different small sizes of that type of vise. I was always told not to try to restore them because they loose what little value they have. All mine are rust free all I've done over the years is to keep them oiled and use them and I've used them a lot they come in handy because they're so portable that I keep a couple in my travel tool bag. You never know when and where you need a vise... I've sold and given away a lot of my old tools but not my clap vises they'll pass on to my eldest son just as my grandfather past them on to me because he didn't have any boys and I was the eldest grandson... The only thing I regret is him not telling me the history of the vises. All he ever said was never loose these and always use them don't let their size fool you, they're much stronger than they look.... And over the year I've found his words to be so true, "They are stronger than they look"... Great video thanks for sharing it.. Be blessed.. BBE..

Hello Metal Butcher!! Sorry I mis-spoke! The all threadI was using was 3/8 x 16 so the drill size was 5/16" I think the original threads might have been a Acme type... The base plate is really important for good operation on these small vises! Thanks very much!!!
