Look what I found- No, clear ketchup is not real, but was a viral hoax. The clear ketchup video was created by Benji, a London-based data analyst who used hair gel, an empty bottle, and a printer to create the viral video. The hoax was so successful that Heinz employees were asked if the product was real.

I have a Vietnam era entrenching tool that one of my brothers in law gave me. It is rusty from him carrying it the trunk of his car. One of these days I will do a restoration- thanks for the tutorial. I would highly recommend using a face shield while using wire brushes on an angle grinder

I remember ketchup bottles being put on top of each other. That’s a while back. I like the idea of shrinking a plastic bottle on the cans. The problem I see is plastic gets brittle and here comes a crack. Your shovel turned out nice. That’s a nice tribute. Great show, thank you

My Dennys story has nothing to do with ketchup. After a night of bar hopping back in the 80's. We stopped at Dennys. I ordered a grand slam, it was missing the sausage. I informed the waitress and she accused me of eating them, I showed her the untouched food and it was clear that no sausage had been on the plate. She then proceeded to search the floor thinking they rolled off. Turns out the cook did indeed forget them and had them waiting. 😅😂

Another fine educational post. I was issued a entrenching tool. thru my years in the Army, I only ever used it was in vasic training Ft Dix N.J. Jan 1968. The ketchup bottles was interesting, my last year of high school I worked part time as a short order cook in a restaurant, and I remember seeing the waitresses pouring ketchup from one bottle to a fuller bottle. Also Catsup has evolved into a ketchup, Catsup originally was Muahroom sauce in late 1700s and 1800s.from cold Taxachusetts.

ScoutCrafter, I remember the catsup bottles, salt & pepper shakers, and A1 Steak Sauce. I can't remember any photos. The first week of my 5 years in Alaska the lows were hitting -15° F in Anchorage. To stay cozy I recommend; a pair of Sorell style boots with removable felt liners, wool socks, nylon underwear, good mittens from a climbing outfitters, a good stocking cap, a Mustang Classic Survival Jacket, and a pair of Chevron thermal insulated overalls. My overalls came in a trade for a pair of ARCO Cross pen and pencils, plus two ball caps. You'll not feel the cold again. Bob

Hey I think you were on point talking about the rivets on the entrenching tool case. It looks like the rivets on the old case were more to the center whereas the new case they were more to the outside. Anyways, as always a great show. Happy New Year to you and your family. The predecessor of that entrenching tool, the M43, was a direct copy of the entrenching tool the Wehrmacht introduced in 1939. The US Army was not happy with the old M1910 entrenching tool, so they looked for a replacement. They got their hands on a German one, and it was considered being a good design.

ScoutCrafter, IIRC the top snap on your E-Tool case had a black finish. We used to use combat boot black eyelet finish. This stuff came in a small bottle and used to touch up the eyelets on your boots. Worked great for the snaps on your canteen covers E-Tool covers etc. The correct color is the finish on the back hooks that you use to put the E-Tool on your WEB gear

I cover my smaller paint and stain cans with Seran wrap. It really works well. I got sick of the lids getting stuck in dried paint and residue.

Thanks John, I was going to say is this 1st April - clear ketchup - that can't be for real ? The other thing they used to do here with the ketchup was to thin it down with vinegar, maybe to help transfer it, but if you weren't careful instead of having to whack it you got a plate full of sauce ! Lovely job on the entrenching tool, that design with the pick is like the one in my Action Man (Uk version of GI Joe) "Special Operations Kit", I've still got it somewhere in the attic !

Great job on the shovel. I have one like that also. I like the idea of the p;astic bottle over the pain/stain can. But it would be difficult to stir it if it sat far a while. All muddy sediment settling on the bottom would be hard to mix I imagine.

The entrenching pouch that the tool would not fit in had probably shrunk over time. Not sure if steaming it before stretching it over another entrenching tool would fix it (similar to how they deal with hats that have shrank)

It’s too funny that you mention the ketchup bottles because this morning I did the very same thing with my laundry detergent and fabric softener since the new bottles only come half full I’m always topping them off because I prefer to have a full bottle.

Hey John, I've been using bottles on my paint cans for years and it works well. What I do is start the bottle onto the can and use your heat gun to warm up the bottle up somewhat and then you can fit the bottle over the can, and the use the gun as you did to shrink it afterwards. If you get a little leaking afterwards you can put a hose clamp over it. I haven't had to but..... - later

Interesting fact... The Pittsburgh Steelers stadium used to be called "Heinz field". The end zone was called the red zone and there were giant heinz ketchup bottles that moved like they were pouring when the Steelers scored. It was cool and payed homage to the fact that Heinz used to be a big employer in Pittsburgh. When they lost the naming rights to the stadium, Heinz sponsored a small town high school football field renovation in Alliquippa (where my mother grew up) downstream from Pittsburgh on the Ohio river. So now "Heinz field" is a highschool football stadium! Cool huh?

Shrink or stretch fit is something I do quite often with PVC pipe to accommodate the small differences in connections on my woodshop vac system. Every manufacturer seems to make connections different enough to not mate with any other brand. So small sections of PVC pipe and a heat gun shrinks or swells to make things fit. (Swell works much better/easier than the work and sometimes clamps to shrink the pipe to fit. And yes, I have seen ketchup bottles stacked late at night before diners closed. Thanks.

Just a thought, that first entrenching tool holder, is it possible that the material being that old has shrunk, I was wondering if a person was to soak that in warm soapy water or warmed mineral oil, just some type of lubricant to moisturize the canvas then while still damp try to stretch it over the tool and hold tension, like I say, just a thought, don’t know if it would work. Nice job on the tool restoration, looks fantastic, enjoyed watching, BTW, my mother used to do what us kids use to call the catsup bottle poor man’s flip, draining one bottle into another, nothing wasted in our economy, she waitresses for awhile so, that’s where it probably got started.

A lot of restaurants started using the squeeze bottles as soon as possible. The glass bottles were a recipe for disaster with customers trying to get Ketchup out and getting it all over themselves which ended up with the restaurant giving the meals for free to make up for the mess. Never been a big Ketchup user but I do like it on French Toast.

My parents used to have a plastic screw on for a heinz bottle so you could screw the 2 bottles together. As for the shovel sheath, maybe if you soaked it you could stretch it to fit.

I wonder about that plastic versus the original in the long run. The plastic wouldn't be airtight and would cause the paint (or stain) to dry out over time. If it's going to be used up quick it may be worth it but not so much in the long run. Very nice job on the entrenching tool. The "forced" sheen looks great. And good choice on the knife.

I think the PET bottle hack would be good for some liquids, but I can't see it being successful for paint in the long run. How would you stir the paint once it settled and developed a skin on top?

Happy New Year John! Just remember the de-clogging technique for a bottle of Heinz ketchup: a sharp blow with the palm of your hand directly on the “57” and the fluid dynamics go into action and the ketchup starts flowing almost immediately.

John do you think it is possible due the placement of the rivets in the one shovel case it is keeping it from going down as it should? If you look at it the rivets are placed further in on that case than the other one those are spaced our further or they appear to be or that is how it looked on camera.

The etch and prep chemically treats the metal against rust so even if the paint chips off the metal will be somewhat protected. It works well! 😃👍

Ketchup needs to be red. I know mushroom was first and banana was used during war shortages but even the banana they dye it red. As to the entrenching tool. Nicely done. For all people saying that because it folds, it's weak although I haven't heard of it breaking on regular GIs which says a lot. It was one of WW2 soldiers top 5 items.

Canvas made with natural fibers can shrink over time especially if it gets wet without the tool inside to hold the shape. I suspect that is why the old one won't work anymore.

A little restaurant in Bethlehem, PA stacked ketchup bottles like that! I went in for breakfast. They were separating the bottles and recapping them. Me, living in PA at the time , but having grown up in Brooklyn, I was gonna put ketchup on my scrambled eggs. I picked up the ketchup. I saw tiny bubbles in the ketchup 😮 I shoulda followed my instincts but I used it anyway. It was the first and last time that I got food poisoning! A really bad case! I was puking for a week! Oy!

I have found the reason Greeks are so good at running diners is because they didn’t try to save a few cents by messing with their food. Hey John, when you put something on your furnace, does it improve the quality of the paint adhesion or cure or does it just decrease the drying time?

Brian- I believe both- Definitely faster but I believe the warming of the item slowly helps the paint cure as it has a very dry warm environment. Sometimes I cover the item with a box or foil to really increase drying speed. Flat paints dry fast to begin with. 😃👍

I was told almost all diners and restraunts use Heinz because its what people know and expect. My girlfriend and I went to a place to eat not that long ago and they had some weird off brand and it tasted like soap and ketchup mixed and was really bad. I would not eat it. I asked and they did not have Heinz so the food sucked. Great re-hab and the USN knife is so cool.

I have a world war 2 entrenching spade marked 1944 and also Ames. Ames must have been a military contractor for a long time. It is the same company that manufactures garden tools, spades, rakes etc. You did a good job with the twisted wire wheel, but they require care because they are really aggressive. I have never used them on tools. Tools require a lighter touch in my opinion. Knotted/twisted wire wheels are great on large areas like car frames. They will make short work of decades of rust and scale because they are coarse and aggressive. But be careful when working on old tools.

My grandfather was catching lunch on a work day and saw another man in the restaurant pour some ketchup out of one of those glass Heintz bottles. When he was done he licked the excess off the top of the bottle and put the lid back on.... What kind of maniac?

The old case seems like it fits until the very end where it hits a rivet or something. 🤔😂👍
