Looks really great! I was worried that the stain was too red, but it is perfect. Spectacular job with the pinstriping with the Sharpies, and it looks so even and symmetrical, even around the curves and odd shapes.

John this one hits home lol. I’m 57 and was lucky enough to have my little Flexi follow me through life. I also “semi” restored mine years back (basically varnished it and repainted the skids) and now it makes THE BEST Christmas decoration in my home. I threw some Christmas lights around it. Legit antique with memories. And WONDERFUL job you did!

I like the information and demonstration about the marker and bleeding that can happen. I worked at Titleist for 32 years in the custom department- we would put custom logos on golf balls. It's an ink transfer process. An etched metal plate is inked then scraped to only leave ink in the etched logo. A soft rubber pad is placed onto etch, which picks up the ink, then the pad is placed onto the item to be "logo'd". - the ink is now transferred to the item. very cool process, especially when you get into multiple colored logos. ....sled coming along great!!

Scotty I wonder how they did it back in 1920 at the Flexible Flyer plant.

Lots of great information. I think the idea of sealing porous wood with shellac before striping to avoid bleeding is an excellent tip. I am impressed with your skill on staining. To me, it helps to be part magician to stain successfully. Outstanding job. Who else would think to dome a nail head to match the originals? Thanks

I have a flexible flyer similar to the one you are restoring. Same alligator varnish but no family connection. My father in law brought it home from the Salvation Army. I never let the kids use it but I did once. Thanks for all the tips and tricks, I appreciate them.

Thanks John, more good progress there, as you say finishes and prep can't be rushed ! I love the attention to detail in modifying the nails. Matching stains is indeed an art and one you have to build on I did my first colour match in our first house where the banister had been given an antiqued finish, they ALWAYS dry different so it take some practice !

ScoutCrafter, You were talking about sledding the other day and memories. The best sledding I had was a fiberglass cafeteria appropriated from the dorm dining hall. A little wax on the bottom reduced friction and increased speed. The University's Arboretum had great hills. There was also an abundance of trees, especially at the bottom of the hills. If an encounter with a tree was imminent, you needed to bail out prior to a collision. The fiberglass trays were not too good when it came to safety ratings. They had a tendency to get brittle when frozen. They would also crack and splinter when they were run into trees or rocks. Metal trays were cold, but on contact, they would just bend. Metal trays could be bent to make tnem serviceable. The cafeteria officially allowed students to check out metal trays. The metal trays were slow and really cold to sit on. A Dake would have helped restorations. One other advantage of trays is that you could string a line together, much like a conga line at a wedding or Bar Mitzvah, creating a toboggan. One other item of note, the Arboretum, was closed to traying and sledding and was securely locked. There was easy access by climbing a cemetary wall and wandering through to an unlocked gate. Bob

If you drink wine or have some friends that do, the newer wine bottle stoppers are great for sandpaper belt cleaning and cost nothing. I have a stock of them from friends and never buy a belt cleaner stick. They appear similar and work just like a purchased belt cleaner. (I am not sure what either are actually made from and don't care.) I use them one time and they are too close for comfort to my fingers and just toss them. Really great belt cleaners. I am enjoying the sled refurbish. I am glad you didn't sand the signatures and company logo away on the underside. Thanks.

Looking good there. Pinstripers that work at it for a living are amazing. The was a old English show from Jack Hargreaves that covered old time trades. He was talking about the guys pinstriping carts. He said they could get tanked at lunch and stagger back to work but their pinstiping work was dead on. There is a guy that hit 47 mph on his Flexible Flyer. He treats his runners like skis. I was looking up the old college where we used to go sledding about a mile away from home. Truly a magical campus along the woods way up on a hill and I see they are going to shut it down and sell it for housing development possibly. Actually started feeling nauseated but after digging around more, looks like the township is going to buy it and turn it into a recreational center. Hard to describe but it truly is a Magical Setting and I'm relieved it's not going to be destroyed. To my eyes you got the stain just right.👀🛷
