I took the entire day to try and find some more buck beds. This particular swamp has a big mix of tree types. There are spruce, tamarack, and some cedar. While there are some oaks, most of them are in the high ground and not very close to the bedding, with some notable exceptions.

The devil is in the details. I like how you kept showing where you are in relation to where you were just at. Hopefully people that see this and are new to this type of scouting watch it a few times and pick up on the method to your location break down. Very well done! very good video! very informative! Keep the vids coming!!! Side note: I cant wait until october when i see a new video showing you killing that buck as he gets out of bed!

I'm betting you finally get around to hunting that piece this year, LOL. If he's the boss in that area he might not have a need to do any rubbing in his bed. I've heard Dan say that many times. Good luck!

Great info. Thanks. Will be applying this to what public hunting land we have here in Texas. Do you also look at satellite maps of the winter and fall? Most of the times it will show a lot of the good deer/hog trails.

Yes, I always look at digital maps beforehand to identify the highest percentage areas to check out, and I look at them again after boots-on-the-ground to gain a greater idea of the "big picture".

Garrett great video... Awesome shed find.... I have been out about 12 miles of scouting so far on the east side of WI... haven't found any sheds yet... but some really good areas and a great bed... questions for u... when would u go in for an observation sit to see who's using the bed ? Isn't Dan Infalt just full of information... his scouting workshop was awesome...
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly in this spot I don't think an observation sit would really work. There's just no place to watch unless you're right on top of him. If there were I'd like to observe through the start of season and periodically through October and make a move once he was there.

That was a great video. Thank you for breaking it down so well. I was just going to ask about your mystery ranch backpack and if the load lifters got caught on branches as you were brush busting? Do you think your pop-up or that pintler would be better for that?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 5 жыл бұрын
The load lifters on the pintler didn't hang up at all. It was pretty streamlined, as the Pop-up also is. The pintler can carry more, though I think the pop up is a better pack to carry on a hunt due to the external pocket layout. It's easier to get to things without having to open up the main pouch and has a smaller profile in the tree.

Nice scouting, but you are making a mistake making an assumption where that buck was late winter/early spring as a place where he is during hunting season. Seeing as you didn’t see rubs he probably wasn’t near there when it matters.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 5 жыл бұрын
I see it happen quite often. The big thing is just to envision what the food/cover/water situation will look like in the fall. In the case of this bedding area, deer will have all three, especially once the oaks start dropping in September in those nearby hardwoods. The rubs seem to be really hit or miss. Some areas have a lot, while some have hardly any. I think density and age structure in an area play into that too. It wasn't in the video, but in the surrounding areas there old scrapes and rublines leading out of the swamp in a few areas. The overall big picture makes sense there, but ultimately in-season scouting will of course be needed to confirm.

Garrett did u use the OSMO camera to capture this video? How do u like the camera?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 5 жыл бұрын
I did use the Osmo Pocket. I worked really well for doing this style of video. They improved the audio and focus since they first came out. Most of the walking and moving shots would've been much shakier with a normal camera.
@MarkDohring
@MarkDohring 5 жыл бұрын
DIY Sportsman I use my GoPro 5 but I love the idea of face tracking on the OSMO.. thanks again
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 5 жыл бұрын
@@MarkDohring Yea the face tracking is great. Especially when walking though some of that brush and looking where I'm going vs looking at the camera. I have the wireless adapter too so I can mount it somewhere and control it remotely or have it track me as I walk by.
@MarkDohring

DIY Sportsman one last question... was the audio and external microphone or was that the built in Mic... as u probably know the GoPro internal mic’s are not very good..
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 5 жыл бұрын
@@MarkDohring Most of it was the internal mic on the Osmo Pocket. The only clips where I used the lav mic were for when I was standing away from the camera.
