SCP-073 | Cain (SCP Orientation)

SCP Orientation is an archive of files of the SCP Foundation.
Today we will be studying item number SCP-073: Cain, Object class: Euclid.
SCP-073, who refers to itself as "Cain", appears to be a heavily-tanned male of Arabic or Middle Eastern descent in his early thirties, with black hair and blue eyes. Arms, legs, spinal cord, and shoulder blades of the subject appear to have been replaced with artificial versions of unknown make and metal. SCP-073’s presence causes death to any and all life grown in soil within a twenty meter radius. Any land SCP-073 has walked on becomes barren as all anaerobic bacteria dies, rendering the soil incapable of supporting life until new bacteria are introduced.
While in Foundation custody SCP-073 has stated that it is familiar with SCP-076, commonly known as “Able”, however, it added that it would be better for all parties involved that it not meet SCP-076.

Twist: The metal parts are the original entity. The fleshy bits are the actual replacement parts, the result of an incomplete conversion from a mechanical to organic life form. The Foundation can be so humanocentric sometimes. :) Also, his curse should mean he's an easy way to dispose of many SCPs permanently if the Foundation decides they're unneeded. Paper-based stuff like Bad Composition or the Missing Number, the many horrible plant SCPs, all rotted to nothing in short order - and of course anything stupid enough to attack him will maim or kill itself in the process while giving him a mild headache. Probably wouldn't appreciate being "accidentally" dropped in the Heart of Darkness' cell, though.

Yeah, that's an error unless you assume the "800 page dictionary" was loaded on an e-reader or was specially made for him. If Caine's one of those folks who prefers the feel of a real book in their hands, you can print on other substances easily enough, and the Foundation has the tech to do paper-thin plastics easily enough. It's kind of a cheat that he doesn't rot petroleum products (ie almost all plastics) as well. The oil they're made of has far more plant matter than animal in its original makeup, but if he did affect it they wouldn't be letting him stroll around the site at will.

@@richmcgee434 Yeah man I feel like I don't need a lot of thought to consider the author of the SCP's background and this video could have easily taken into account the mention of the dictionary and simply highlighted it by saying "flipped through a digital copy of a dictionary" but that's not what happened. It's actually given light that Cain prefers the tactile contact of books which on the whole are made from organic matter, and in the next paragraph books are specifically mentioned as one of the objects immediately destructed by contact with Cain. Most electronic items indeed contain components derived from organic sources but at some stage become synthetic and yes, books can be comprised of at-least mostly synthetic products but you would think that detail would have been mentioned with some granularity so as to avoid confusion. Unfortunately confusion is exactly the response intended from this kind of writing.

@@richmcgee434 Printed on tyvek maybe, which is a plastic paper-like materiel made from filaments of HDPE pressed together under heat at high pressure. Basically they shred old milk jugs and then run the shredded HDPE through hot rollers. It's has a paper-like feel and it super strong, it's commonly used for tarps but you could make book pages out of it.

I suspect that because this guy is peaceful, and used as an emergency information storage, the Foundation doesn't want to risk it. Also, there is always the risk that 682 could somehow copy this guy's ability, and that would be bad.

@@saphiraluxray9606 I'll have to find it first to confirm, but if I remember correctly SCP-507 found himself in a dimension that did exactly that: SCP let Able and Cain meet, this results in Able slicing Cain's head off, only for it to reflect back and kill himself cleanly. Able then revives back, tries to kill Cain and kill himself again. Able repeats the process for an inordinate amount of time. Until finally he practically loses spirit.

Why would he be? He has free will and sentience, and would be damnably hard to stop if he wanted to escape, though he is cooperative for now. The Containment Classes refer to how easy they are to contain, not danger, which is why the new classification system with Disruption and Risk classes exists. The simplest explanation of the Containment Classes (Formerly simply Object Class) is the "Locked Box" test: Safe - If it is locked up, it will do nothing until directly interacted with, and will remain in the box indefinitely. Euclid - If it is locked up, it may do things by itself, and could potentially try to influence staff into releasing it or attempt escape by itself. It is either unknown if it will stay put or will resist, but is quite possible to contain. All sentient anomalies are at minimum Euclid. Keter - It will definitely try to get out or otherwise breach by itself unless extraordinary means are taken, and recontainment will be problematic. Thaumiel - It is by itself an effective means of containing anomalies. A nuclear bomb would be Safe, for example, as they don't just detonate themselves or walk off, etc. Cain is definitely sentient and definitely capable of trying to escape, should he feel the need to, but is not actively trying to do so, nor causing containment issues, so he is Euclid.
