To be submitted to the SCP Ethics Committee: You do not let a sane dog die in a cold mettle box, or on the hard road shoulder. This is the debt we, as a toolmaking species, owe the universe for daring to shape lifeforms into tools. You may have to put a dog down, but when you do you hold it, and look it in the eye, and you tell it it's a good dog, first. A dog, thanks to us, can no longer be a wolf: we have changed them, root and stem, and we can never be free of the moral obligation that entails. If some... distant tool maker, eons from now, found the last dog, dying far from us, I hope they would have decency to do for us, what Dr. Bloom did for the creators of the Harbingers.

When I was young, I wondered how many things like this were out there wandering in the dark, lost and forgotten. As I got older I understood that even if such things did exist, Humanity's hyper-parochial status meant that such things would still be non-existent from our perspective. The older I get the more I appreciate Clarke's aphorism. I do not know if it would be worse to know that the galaxy is dead, and we are actually the first (or only) civilization. Or that there are other Lights out there in the Darkness, but we are too blind to see them.

I imagine it's for 2 reasons: First so that you don't get emotionally manipulated by an SCP that may be lying to you and Secondly so that your less emotionally attached to all of the SCP's in general because of the horrible shit you may end up having to do to contain then

Caleb Hughes 1. Harbinger was obviously in some kind of distress 2. The task force was being cautious regardless

Safety precautions. The Foundation is cold, not cruel - hence the use of D-Class and general isolation of a lot of SCPs. A benevolent-looking SCP can easily become malevolent out of nowhere (See: SCP-1048, Builder Bear) and trying to lend any emotional credence to the SCPs can lead to very dangerous consequences (See: The entire existence of MTF-Omega, before it was disbanded). The Foundation's entire goal to to keep anomalies contained, and to NOT vary in behavior at any point. Letting Harbinger believe that Dr. Bloom was a "Master" could have caused it to vary greatly in behavior - unfortunately, it turns out it was dying. It's not that the Foundation doesn't see or understand why Dr. Bloom was sympathetic - hence putting him on leave, rather than outright firing him. They have to enforce the same consequences for "being emotional" with an SCP to everyone - regardless of circumstances. Otherwise, how many more "exceptions" to the rules can doctors and staff work around in order to communicate with potentially dangerous SCPs?

Bloom broke protocol and deserved to be reprimanded... but I also don't think they were as harsh as some people are thinking. For all we know they basically told him to take some time off because of how much the anomaly's death affected him.

I absolutely love Harbinger, she is and always will be my favorite SCP. She worked so hard to get her message out and in my opinion Dr. Bloom did the best thing at the end, even though he lied he did it to help Harbinger, he made her feel accomplished, and she was! She got her message out, she served her function and he made sure she knew that. It was wrong of them to reprimand him.

Saddest part about this SCP is that we aren't heeding its warning. It's basically telling us to get our shit together and spread ourselves in this universe before this universe snuffs us out. But we, like so many others apparently, are too busy squabbling amongst ourselves to do that, and some day it will be too late for us to do much of anything except relay a message... Just like the harbingers...

I still find it interesting, perhaps of most interest how people draw parallels with their own life experiences from this type of stories, finding their own connections, that weren't even intended or meant to be genersting a meta narrative aspect in these stories to such a degree...and yet find themselves there, inspiring, soothing and connecting people. Why I love the very concept of stories and storytelling, and how even the most of absurd or surreal of those can mean so much to out lives....

@Nicholas Ramirez Haltenhof They aren't psychopaths... okay maybe most of them aren't... half? Anyway, you can't really humanize the SCPs they contain. If you do, it's harder to do what is necessary. Emotions aside, I'm happy the writer of this SCP put in the detail that a ship that generates this much heat REALLY NEEDS an efficient cooling system. Space is generally a vacuum. So, its pretty difficult to radiate much heat away from it to cool down when something on the ship is actively heating it.
