PSA - "I really wish they (the authors of SCP articles) would stop adding redacted/black bars into these articles, it's annoying and it just seems lazy to me" If you're thinking of commenting something like this. Please read. This SCP was posted 9 years ago - the authors are not doing this anymore (and if they are, it's usually done well). This was very much a series 1 and 2 trend that did get much less common in later years. I can guarantee you that most SCP authors now actually agree with you. If you're ever annoyed by this, check the article post date (if it's 8 years or older) or just look at the article number

I've always preferred SCP-1529 over SCP-5140, but that's probably because I'm more accepting of one spooky cold man than more spooky cold men than all humans that ever existed. But to share my appreciation for the King of the Mountain, here's a little trivia about this SCP: 1). The "Procedure Boukreev" mentioned at 2:31 appears to be named after Anatoli Boukreev, a Russian climber known for ascending ten 8,000m+ peaks without supplemental oxygen, and for saving the lives of several climbers during the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. 2). Incident 1529-1 is implied to be the said 1996 Everest Disaster, that killed expedition coordinator Rob Hall (8:33 ███ ████) and 11 others. 3). The "L" in the interview is implied to be Lincoln Hall (of no relation to Rob Hall). His encounter is implied to have occurred during his 2006 attempt at summiting Everest, when he miraculously survived the night at 8,700 m (28,543 ft) on descent, returning after his family was told he had died. He died six years later in 2012 after suffering from mesothelioma. 4). The "Green Boots" mentioned by Lincoln at 11:31 is the unidentified body of a climber that became a landmark on the main Northeast ridge route of Mount Everest, recognizable for his bright green Koflach mountaineering boots. While not officially identified, he is believed to have been Tsewang Paljor, an Indo-Tibetan border policeman that died in 1996. 5). Before the wiki's image licensing reform, the entry also had an image of Hannelore Schmatz's body, captioned as an identified victim of SCP-1529. Schmatz was the fourth woman to summit Everest, but ended up the first woman and first German citizen to die on it as well.

The censoring isn't terrible on this scp but in some parts it just makes things anticlimactic. Like when they were going to describe what it does to people and they just cut it out and when they censored what L saw behind the goggles. If you factor in SCP-5140, which implies Everest is a mound of zombified corpses, and the fact SCP-1529 induces a rapid decay on his victims and calls his effects a “gift,” it is likely he can be a protective spirit only the sense he offers you an arguably less horrible fate than the one you’ll get from SCP-5140. It’s essentially a gift in the vein of being killed instantly over being made to suffer till death. Still not all that better but preferable to the latter.

As people mention in other comments, the article suffers from being heavily censored. However I have a perspective that might make it a little better. There are two types of censoring in the foundation's files. The blacked out portions, and expunged portions. The blacked out portions may simply be unavailable to our security clearence, but they're still in some version of the document. Expunged portions are removed from any version of the document, safe maybe for the one O5 has. Black out is used for information regarding names, dates and locations, to not give out civilians' involvement with the SCP and make an investigation into it impossible. When data is expunged, it usually is done because the information may cause foundation personnel to commit acts against th foundation's interests, or because it's a non-anomalous memetic hazard - knowing something about the object may have undesirable psychological effects on the reader, which while harmful, aren't caused by the data itself, but rather human mind's reaction to it. I believe the specifics of what 1529 does to its victims, and what's behind the goggles, are expunged because that information might prompt you to seek out the same fate as the rest of the victims. It showed L. visions of people who died relaxing, and having a peaceful rest, its "gift" for them. Maybe the people who climb Everest and are attacked go to some sort of climber's heaven after they die this way? From what information we have it doesn't seem likely, but maybe it would make a similar conclussion possible if the expunged data was available.

A classic. You hit the emotional cadence in these interviews really well, always been a strong suit of yours.

Really enjoyed this one, thank you for voicing it! Love the kind of unexplained, unnerving ones; gives it an.. Old feel so to speak. No long dramatic backstory of who it is; vague implications and unnerving,barely-comprehensible stuff reminds me a bit of the old 049. Just a bit. Or just old SCPs in general

i like to think this SCP is just a complete chad and is somehow immune to the cold and is just upholding his territory. his inactive state is just him falling face first into the snow falling asleep

Going to guess it feeds on body heat and imprisons your soul based on the hypothermia and warm paradise imagery. I wonder what made L turn into another instance when he isn't the only survivor though.
@mr_prayingmantisawesome34902 ай бұрын
What do you mean that L turned into another instance, maybe because he was able to survive it on his own?

The frequent use of data expunged was irritating at first... Until you realize that they wouldn't expunge it if they needed it, and it mostly occurs when describing what the SCP does to its victims. Agent: "What did he do?" L: "He (SCP activity)." Researcher: "Oh, God, I did not need to hear that!" (pause) "Dammit I can't stop picturing it! Amnestics! Now!"

i feel like this article was written by someone who dislikes people for risking their life for effectively nothing, so SCP-1529 is sort of a revenge against "stupid" people by it actively and terrifyingly going after those who do such dangerous things for no practical purpose. basically an "adventure-seeker hunter" or something.

So what is it doing to it's victims? At first I thought it was potentially eating them but the bodies remain, albeit dessicated, (unless I misunderstood). Is it mutilating them? Violating them? Some sick dominance move? Edit: Maybe it "drinks" them. Would explain the accelerated rate of decomposition.
@petulantpeterturbo3 жыл бұрын
My thoughts on it given what happened to the researcher who looked it dead in the eyes and given the accelerated decomposition are that it takes their soul somehow. Edit: After piecing all that along with L’s description together it does seem like it’s taken their souls someplace else, possibly while it keeps their bodies to feed off of their age maybe, if that makes any sense.

I don't understand why infrared imagine wouldn't work. They probably meant to write thermal. Also bodies don't "rot" in subzero temps.
@samgeorge47983 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure thermal is a version of ir if I remember correctly. But yes they definitely ment thermal

I remember early on, part of the horror was that these things read like some sort of fucked up FOIA request. Like you found an agency or wiki leaks style site where someone was begrudgingly giving you a glimpse of what laid beyond the veil of normalcy. Of course the SCP Foundation became more well known, writers changed, and the style evolved. I think the newer style works in a world where new readers already know about the high level ideas of the wiki through cultural osmosis. But sometimes I miss the old days when I was discovering it for the first time.
