I like to bring a length of accessory cord ( fairly thick) along side something to cut it with, usually a small Leatherman in the bottom of my bag. Useful for if you need to bail off something and you don’t want to lose more expensive materials. Handy for letting people play with knots without risking a group tangling up a longer rope.

Depends a bit on the style. If I was leading 2 others I'd normally stick with something 30-40 depending on the route.

What do you use to laminate the maps? Do you print out the maps or cut up OS paper maps? Any issues with maintaining scale if you print out? Thanks 😊

A mix... before maps get completely ruined I cut them up and laminate them, I also print them out and it seems easy enough to get the scale right :)

One thing to think about for scrambling or climbing when taking walking pole or poles is what are you going to do with them on route? How small do they fold up? Can you fit them in sections inside a pack so the don't snag on stuff, especially in gullies, chimneys or overgrown descent routes. Speaking of packs, one that allows you to tip your head back fully with a helmet on can be more comfortable, maybe removing a detachable lid helps there.

I mainly wear boots as I have foot problems and find I can tighten them to my ankles and let my feet swell and breath by loosing the laces on the top of my feet.

In the same camp in the boots/approach shoes discussion. Got some stick for it when recommending shoes for the Salkentay trail but they worked brilliantly for me, and the other leaders who tried it through that summer.

If I am striping a rack for mountaineering routes where I don’t want too much kit I will often take only even or only odd nut sizes as each covers two sizes when placed edge on or face on. Not perfect but if you are moving alpine style worth considering.

Thanks for the vid, great to see your kit choices. I've got a Garmin watch too and I love it, but I always take it off for climbing/scrambling because I've scratched so many previous watches when doing it (e.g. placing threads, or awkward reaches). Are you just super careful with yours, or have you got some sneaky tricks to protect it?

Personally I am with you on the footwear, something lightweight is awesome in the mountains. I have found boots more of a comfort with a multi-day pack though, I do start to feel the benefit if I have a more significant percentage of my bodyweight on my back. Anyone else find the same?

You could be right in saying the extra support saves some energy. I've not seen any studies to show that but it could be a thing!

HI Jez, could you tell me how wide my prusik cord should be for a 9.8 mm rope please?

I don't get super stressed about this. When I carried home made prusiks I tended to carry one 5mm, one 6mm, between them they'd grip on anything. I tend to find that by adding or subtracting wraps, and knowing a few different versions of prusiks you can make them work in most combos. 9.8 is pretty chunky so pretty much anything should grip. My current sewn prusiks are 5.5mm.

Hey, love this stuff. Ive been indoor climbing occasionally for a few years but came across an interesting problem. Ive been to some super deep backcountry backpacking areas on 5 + day trips that ended up with us trying to go up or down some stuff that was just barely walkable and we talked about bringing some sort of safety equipment next time we do that trip as there really wasnt a good way around. Ive looked a ton for some info on the bare minimum lightest weight gear to bring strictly as a backup, with no intention to use it unless there was no other way, but definitely feeling like we should still bring something. Do you have any suggestions or ideas of places to look? This scrambling stuff seems relevant, but I would be curious if you think you could cut down much of it?

He did some video on mountain leading, which goes over option that only uses a rope, no gear. It's less secure, but very light and if you're in terrain where a handrail would make you feel secure it's a fair option.
