The etch brought out a pleasant surprise. I would have never expected that. Nice looking blade. Keep up the great work.

Somthing I picked up from an awesome smith named John Norwood was, drill the handle holes before you split the block that way when you get the handle shaped and holes drilled you cut it down the middle and it’s ready to go. Makes life just a little easier. Looks great awesome work as always.
@JPsBladeworks2 жыл бұрын
Ive done that as well but i found that if for some reason my block isnt perfectly straight it affects my holes a lot more because the distance of tilt is longer in a block vs a scale. Not sure if that makes sense. I hear some places sell drillbits specially for knife making which are like 5 thousands oversized for exact pin fits with no binding.

@@JPsBladeworks yea I know exactly what you mean. It has a lot to do with how flat your edge is that you have on the bottom while you’re splitting

Another good build. Looks good. And great call on saw blades being different. It had a good contrast
@JPsBladeworks2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The contrast was good. It just seemed that the darker metal turned a light grey instead of a bold black like how 15n20 and 1080 turn.

I now regret that I passed up a chance to get a bunch of band saw blades…looks great brotha!

Thank you. When i accumulate enough small bandsaws I always do a canister billet to recycle them and give them new life. Makes great knives.

That really did turn out nice. I thought the shape was deliberate when you were beating that full tang into it. The etch is brilliant.
@JPsBladeworks2 жыл бұрын
I saw the tip and that gave me the shape idea. Then i forged the tang to suit what i had envisioned. Thats what i meant lol

I have a bunch of newer ones from a local one-man sawmill. I'm pretty sure today they are bi-metal blades, hard on the teeth, with a softer back.i need to try this with some of mine, after shoulder surgery 🤠

Good luck on your surgery. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks. I like the white spacer with the walnut handle. I think it gives good contrast.

I have access to quite a few large bandsaw blades. We have 3 professional saws at my work. We just throw them away. I'm trying to think of some kind of cool project I could use them in. We have about 30 of them built up right now that are just going to be thrown away if I don't take them. I don't know, just seems like a waste
@JPsBladeworks Жыл бұрын
If anything you could always take them and sell them to any local bladesmiths. Most are 15n20 or similar steel is what i hear. Its great for making knives.

Hello JP, nice build, can you tell me which temperatures you used for quenching and tempering the blade?
@JPsBladeworks Жыл бұрын
I eye ball it but i want to shoot for 1475ish for my quench. Then i temper at between 300 to 400 depending on the steels. For at least 2 hrs.

Absolutely beautiful knife brother! Did you re stack any times at all? In the video it looks like you just did the initial stack and that was it but the pattern looks way more re fined than just the initial however many layers.
@JPsBladeworks2 жыл бұрын
I didnt restack. Im not sure how many layers it had but it had to be st least 50 layers. It was a lot of pieces i forge welded together since those blades are thin.

What is that black substance that come out like a dead skin when hammer?
@JPsBladeworks Жыл бұрын
Its forging scale. All steel you forge will scale up like that. Its from the oxidation of the steel.
