Scrap Wood Storage Cart

Every shop eventually needs a scrap wood storage cart. I looked around for ideas for a scrap wood storage cart and found one in an article on FineWoodworking.com (www.finewoodworking.com/2012/06/22/a-smart-cart-for-scraps).
This was the right idea but I wanted one a little bigger so I made mine 4 feet wide rather than 3. I also wanted to be able to change the size of the compartments so I made the dividers removable. Lastly, the Fine Woodworking storage cart used dados for all of the joinery and utilized a lot of bevel cuts which I didn't feel like messing with so I used pocket screws and ditched the bevels.
The Fine Woodworking article has an exploded view with a few dimensions but I still drew this in SketchUp before I got started so I could have a cut list.

Nicely done, Tim. I like that you admit when you goof up, we all do, but it's refreshing to see a KZbinr admit it. Thanks, looking forward to your next build.

Shop furniture seems to move better on larger casters. The slightest thing - sawdust, chips, cords, imperfections in the concrete floor - will stall a 2” caster. I use 3” casters for almost everything.

Yeah, I started using smaller casters and found that investing in the larger ones was a good idea. Everything in my shop is on 3" casters as well now. Thanks for watching!

Absolutely love that type of sliding miter saw. I like my Ryobi, but I hate how much room the traditional tube-style slides takes up. Maybe one day I can get myself the scissor style too and gain 8-10 inches back on my miter station.

Nice Work! I think I will make one but add an area on the back for wider width pieces.

Nice build! Planning to do something along these lines. Re: casters, 3” casters roll much more easily, especially if there is any sawdust on the floor, cords, etc. Go with poly or thermoplastic (synthetic) rubber (TPR), not “natural” rubber.

Good work. Can you do a walk through on the Dust collection system you had in the background there.

Thanks! Are you referring to the shop vac cart or my dust collector?

Very nice build, one of the better ones that i have seen so well done for that. As for the pocket holes being on the inside, unless the cart is empty you can't see those pocket holes anyway? and as you said 'it's only shop furniture' or do what i do fill and sand them. Anyway a thumbs up from me, and well done again. Barry (ENG)

Nice build. Regarding the castors. I always spend a couples extra dollars on the better ones. So, I don't have to replace them later. I like your dust collector cart that was in the background at the beginning of the video. Do you have a build video for that?
@TheAverageCraftsman
@TheAverageCraftsman 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'll be getting some new ones. These were just what I had on hand at the time of the build. The shop vac cart is a slightly modified version of Jay Bates' shop vac cart. I really like it. You can view his build video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppqTqaR7itKoq5Y

Nice job on this video. What is the yellow cyclone I saw toward the end? How many horsepower? How do you like it? Just curious. Thanks, Greg
@TheAverageCraftsman
@TheAverageCraftsman 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's an Oneida Mini Gorilla. The one in the video is their original model I believe. The newer one has a resin cyclone rather than steel. It's 1.5 HP. It works okay. I am really over dragging dust collectors and shop vacs around my shop. They just take up so much space. In the next year I hope to install a fully ducted system

Nice build. I am going to make a similar one, but much smaller for my studio to hold paper rolls. I am just curious about the dust collection attachment on your orbital sander. Would you mind sharing that? Thanks

That's the Rockler small port hose kit (www.rockler.com/dust-right-universal-small-port-hose-kit) I DO NOT recommend it. It's really heavy. I used it all of a couple weeks and ended up getting a Bosch hose (amzn.to/2D6Tsdn

@@TheAverageCraftsman Thanks for responding, but 2 x 3/8 = 6/8 = 3/4 = 24/32 > 23/32 = plywood thickness. Unless they are offset, but they appeared to be aligned.
