If you are happy making these bags that's what's important I'm an old lady from the UK I'm 71 but I think everything you make is fantastic 😊❤xxx

I think you have just about hit the top level of eco-minded living if you are using scraps of used fabric that you probably thrifted or got on sale in the first place, then used to make clothing, to make a bag to carry your groceries in. You win!

That is a great idea! I made my mum a patchwork bag to take a seat cushion out with her for xmas and someone asked her if I could make them one, I told her it took about 5 hours so they probably wouldn't want to pay for that 😂 I recently made my dad an under seat bag to take on a flight because budget airline carry on fees have gone insane in recent years, it was so much more complicated than I anticipated. England brought in a charge for plastic carrier bags in 2015, I'm pretty sure I haven't bought any bags in that time but still somehow have so many fabric bags! I want to make some like yours now, they are a good size and great use of scraps

The bags turned out really well and a good use of odd pieces of material left over from making other pieces.

This reminds me of a jelly roll race quilt. You have the strips and you sew them end to end and end up with an enormous strip and then you take the two ends, match them up and then sew a long seam until you get down to where they are attached. Repeat the process until you get the width you want. You can do a kind sized quilt top in less than 90 minutes sewing time.

personal attacks at 30 seconds in, perfection. 😁 the maroon with the pale blue and pink roses is the exact same color as one of my favorite fabrics, I paused the vid and ran through the house to go find it, not identical pattern but the colors are spot on. I love these so much. Quilting is hard on the body for sure, I don't know what health things you struggle with but yes, 100% easier to cut with a table.

I have my own reusable bags but if I ever need more for holding my projects, patchwork is what I would do. Your bags turned out beautifully!! It does take a bunch of time to make quilting stuff, which is why I hardly do it.

Ooh I love how the different fabric textures capture the light. I wouldn’t have thought to mix fabric types! They look really cute. Great job, Haley! I look forward to future scrap busting projects too. I have way too many and recently had to throw some away 😢.

Yeah since they're bags and I in theory shouldn't need to wash them too often so I feel like having mismatched fabric types work for it! For something like a shirt I'd probably keep them all the same type of fabric so shrinkage is less risky.

Your memory tote bags turned out fantastic. Using the brick pattern was really brilliant. It looks amazing and doesn’t require precise seam matching. If you want to try another pattern that looks good scrappy and doesn’t involve matching seams, look up potato chip quilt blocks. It uses the same size pieces you cut for your bricks and you can make it as large as you want.

This is a great project for fabric scraps but quilting is pretty painful to do since it takes so much time. Rewarding....but painful. The bags are really cute in the end and I'm sure you'll get a ton of use out of them!

These turned out very cute! I'm doing a crazy quilted bag for my knitting from scraps and while I don't work often on it because it's not very high on my sewing priority list, it's always fun and I enjoy it. Sorting the scraps and thinking of the garments I made out of those fabrics is definitely also one of my favourite parts for it :)

This is really pretty and a wonderful use of scraps. I keep meaning to dig out my scraps bag and also start a cabbage one. Hope you’re doing a bit better than more recently. Quilting IS rough on the body - I love pre-cut strips and squares, or I set up my dining table or desk and just go through fabrics, but break it down into stages so I get a break. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next: I’ve made individual quilt squares ar a time then joined them together when I’ve got enough then quilt the thing

Such pretty bags, you sure know how to match colors! I have a weak back too, so now when I cut out fabric I do it on my ironing board - as long as the pieces are not too wide. I place some stiff cardboard (the type cereal boxes are made from) on the ironing board under the pattern and it helps. The only time I had to cut from the floor (like you I am not well equipped) was for curtains and my body hated me for it! Take care, thank you as always for the inspiration. You could also make a bag using denim scraps and use the pocket… as a pocket 😁!

I love the colors and very bright handles on your bags❤ I am with you on quilting, it's so much work! I've almost finished my first ever quilt and made a matching bag with leftover scraps to put it in. I feel like I have to make one more because I don't want my nephew to feel left out but after that it'll be many years before I consider making another.

They have this tape that’s basically wash away stabilizer. It’s 2.5” wide and you use it as a guide to sew on random scraps. Then you use the tape to cut away the excess fabric. I think it will help cut down on cutting time for you and might make it a more enjoyable process for you. I literally just learned about this so I will try to find a video and direct you to it! I love the idea of turning your garment scraps into a bag though!

Ok I looked it up, the product is called scrap tape. If you look up “quilting scrap tape” on KZbin, you will find a bunch of videos of people using it! Hopefully this is helpful lol I am a garment sewer and have struggled through the quilt process before.

I love these! What a great stash busting project. Do you use an apron while cooking? Wouldn't that be cute! When the video began, my brain imagined a non pattern project. It might be called a helter shelter bag. I think I would just grab random pieces and stitch them on top of each other, letting the edges be frayed. My Mom says my style is boho, so this would suit me. I really enjoyed seeing the projects you made.

These bags are lovely and I totally get the nostalgia aspect, that’s one of my favorite things about making items with scrap fabric. And speaking of recognizing some of the scraps, did the scrap at the bottom middle of the cost breakdown screen match the dress you were wearing in that part of the video?

Hah, I thought I was the only one who thought about just how many times you have to reuse a grocery bag. I think it is tragic that stores only seem interested in selling polypropylene ones and not canvas or something else less horrible. Awhile ago I weighed a typical reusable bag (74 grams) and a typical disposable bag (~4 grams). So the break-even point there is using it ~18x. But why pollute the world with more microplastic junk at all?
@HaleyMarieVintage
@HaleyMarieVintage Ай бұрын
Fully agree, I hate that weird plasticky feel they have, also the disposable bags have some potential to be recycled depending on the city, and I need to dig up the article but if you use the thin disposable ones as a trashcan liner after you buy it , it is significantly more sustainable than the heavier polypropylene one.
@jessicav2031
@jessicav2031 Ай бұрын
@@HaleyMarieVintage Hah, yeah, that pressed waffle pattern feels like sandpaper or something on my brain. Is there some secret law that everything has to be plastic, because it seems like it. Plastic bags are bad? Okay, let's replace them with plastic. The papers coming out on microplastics in our bodies are horrifying.
