These 99 model year 996 are super special! No onboard computer, different interior materials, throttle cable, amber lights, all make it unique to the 99. There are also rumors these were built on the production line at the same time as the 993 (at least the 98 build date cars). They are also incredibly light, IIRC just under 3000 pounds.
@ericl452
@ericl452 9 ай бұрын
I have a very early 99 built in March 1998. It was built on the same line as the last of the 993s which were built through April 1998. The very first 996s were built in October 1997. With the limited research I did, it appears that the earliest cars, 1997 builds, were built primarily for Europe (and a handful for Australia?). There may be some January 1998 cars built for the USA, but it appears almost all were built starting in February 1998.

Love your vids , love Porsche, had a repair shop for over 30 years. Just wanted to tell you that the oversized IMS bearing from 05- 08 are replaceable without splitting the case. There is a tool that shaves the block a few mm to enable the bearing to be pulled out. I have that tool and used it a few times, works great
@jamesgordon7608
@jamesgordon7608 9 ай бұрын
So then those style ims bearing that require your tool. Still have that same problem of grenadine. Seemed like everything was really good. Till you showed up with your correct tools and knowledge. LOL.
@Harryrcb
@Harryrcb 9 ай бұрын
they do although they are not as prevalent to fail as the earlier ones. I have changed about a dozen of the newer ones and they all showed signs of excessive wear. BTW I closed my shop about 2 years ago but still have all the tools. I might be tempted to sell you the setup although you can rent them from EPS (european parts solution) they also sell the roller bearing which I believe is a much better solution than others that i have tried on hundreds of vehicles. I specialized in Porsche only and the roller bearing from EPS was the only one that II never had problems with.
@dkjens0705
@dkjens0705 7 ай бұрын
Just park the car at a slant with the nose up so the IMS bearing is not submerged in engine oil while parked and oil doesn't run into and get trapped inside the IMS and eventually turns acidic and washes out the bearing lubricant.
@Harryrcb
@Harryrcb 7 ай бұрын
I like your idea lol, however the Porsche engineers thought of that and put seals on both sides of the bearing so that just enough oil gets in to wash out any grease but not enough to actually lubricate it. , after all it was supposed to be a "lifetime" bearing
@dkjens0705
@dkjens0705 7 ай бұрын
@Harryrcb I've taken many m96 and m97 engines apart and when changing IMS bearing always found rather bad smelling acidic oil inside the IMS. The IMS bearing would mostly go bad on garage queens, not on daily drivers or even cars that were tracked. Cars parked for weeks at a time i figure will accumulate more oil inside the shaft to go bad and wash the lubricants out of the bearing.

Nice having it in one video. Never would have changed the wheels though - makes it look like a proper heap which I'd immediately scroll past if I was looking to buy. There used to be a ton of them, with. thedodgy gt3 bodykits and those wheels, and they all looked really cheap. Fried egg 996 should play to its strenghts.

Just an observation, but I think the alternator on the good used engine you bought is for an automatic transmission, because the pulley has a built in clutch. The alternator pulley on the bad engine you pulled out is for a manual transmission and is a standard pulley without clutch. The C5 Corvette is the same way. Clutch on the automatic transmission alternator pulley, no clutch on the 6 speed pulley.

Resleeving and upgrading to forged race pistons and increasing bore 2mm costs US$5,000. You end up with a much stronger and better running engine and eliminate the aluma coated cylinders and steel coated piston skirts which will be the next thing to go on this engine. To rebuild the engine yourself you will need a manual and go step by step when assembling. These engines don't go together like any other engines, inserting the three pistons on one side requires special tools for inserting wrist pins and clips and patience ha ha.

I know many hate the 996 but I consider it a necessary step in the evolution of the 911 before the 997 chassis. I have a 2002 996.2 and with the 3.6 liter M96 rated at 320hp the car feels like it makes a touch more. On the scales it weighed in just under 2900 pounds, a smidge heavier than my Son’s VW Corrado SLC. I’m happy to see you saved it without swapping in an LS. I know it’s not cheap to save these cars. But I love the character of the M96. I love the brute force torque delivery of the LS - (I also own a 2000’ Pontiac FireHawk Trans-Am) but I think the M96 is a great little motor when the idiotic engineering choices are fixed on it. The later model M96 doesn’t allow you to replace the ims the way it is on the 98’ to 04’ versions, no thanks to the lip in the case, but those 05’+ engines aren’t known for having those issues. Popping the seal on the ims was the right thing to do. The only issues the 05’ + engines have is bore score which is less catastrophic in that you can still use the engine case, just needs sleeves. I sub’d you guys did a great job man, and after a. I’ve detail you’ll have a great daily. These cars are awesome for daily use.

not being a Porsche guy (MOPAR head all the way) i gotta say... that was a cool video! i've never personally dropped a rear motor ever... so watching (basically) how easy it is... VS lifting a front engine up n out... damn! :O that's 'easy'! :O call it a win? bout all i could suggest is do a BlueBook search on the same car, model year etc., 100% perfect buy and drive... if your $14k beats those BB list prices? not including you guys' labor... or those neat new tools you bought... because as any gearhead or shadetree will tell you... SOMETIMES a one off 'i need this tool for JUST this one project' SOMETIMES bites ya in the butt! and SOMETIMES you'll use that one tool two or even more times... so if you guys ever use those neat new tools at least three more times... write em off as an INVESTMENT for the future... then the new tires... oh you forgot to fix that sunroof switch... so if you guy's $14k (and a few extras) beats anything else 100% perfect online? definite win! thanks again for the cool and entertaining video! :D

Good content Lee. I have to agree with some of the other posters, it's a better looking Porsche than many of the late model ones. Perfect car for a beginner Porsche owner.

Cool car and good vid. Although I feel you guys missed a trick if you had a mezger sitting about from a Cup car. You could have made yourself a 996 GT3 Touring!

I think the steering wheel swap was worth it. The old wheel reminds me of early airbag wheels in mid to late 90’s fords, like the mustang, ranger, explorer, etc…

I’m just super happy another person went from thinking those were the worst ones to saying “wow I’m genuinely impressed” I’m a early 90s baby and for oddly enough for some reason I’ve always loved the 996 gen aside from some cool and bada new cars the 996 is definitely my favorite model. Shape. Size. 90s retro style. Borderline analog. It’s just right.

bless you for not doing an LS swap. LS swapping a Porsche is an abomination

For a $6k 996 non turbo with a blown motor I think if it were me I'd LS swap it considering your nickel plating is probably pretty worn down. Just a way cheaper way to make the car whole and a perfect candidate for it since it's a milkshaked motor anyways. Your car though so respect and no judgement. I've engaged in stupider crusades for sure lol.

IMS retrofit guru says that failures on OEM bearings is less than 10% at about 100k mi. Then it only makes sense to just use OEM and change out every 100k mi. There’s no good reason with zero test to go with after market

I appreciate you keeping this 996 stock. Interestingly, both of my 1999 911s had cylinder 6 failures around 75k miles. There's lots of chatter on Rennlist about the engine casting on the first model year 996 3.4 engines being faulty. I haven't had any issues on either of my crate engines from Porsche. It seems like most '99s will eventually need a new engine. But I don't have enough data to validate this claim. Just my experience.

In my country, the cheapest 996 costs 28k euro. Atleast it's solid with IMS fixed.

First time I seen you guys and it's cool. The steering wheel is a bonus and it goes with the trim. So that's a third base run. Chow for now.

Fuchs just don’t look great on a 996 gen or newer, absolutely gorgeous on older cars though. I prefer the Turbo Twists the 996 came with.
