These 99 model year 996 are super special! No onboard computer, different interior materials, throttle cable, amber lights, all make it unique to the 99. There are also rumors these were built on the production line at the same time as the 993 (at least the 98 build date cars). They are also incredibly light, IIRC just under 3000 pounds.
@ericl452
@ericl452 Жыл бұрын
I have a very early 99 built in March 1998. It was built on the same line as the last of the 993s which were built through April 1998. The very first 996s were built in October 1997. With the limited research I did, it appears that the earliest cars, 1997 builds, were built primarily for Europe (and a handful for Australia?). There may be some January 1998 cars built for the USA, but it appears almost all were built starting in February 1998.

You scored on that replacement engine looks like it was a factory replacement for a car with a failed IMS. Mileage will be less than reported for the car, upgraded bearing, etc. You’ve got yourself a nice car there now.
@Harryrcb
@Harryrcb Жыл бұрын
Love your vids , love Porsche, had a repair shop for over 30 years. Just wanted to tell you that the oversized IMS bearing from 05- 08 are replaceable without splitting the case. There is a tool that shaves the block a few mm to enable the bearing to be pulled out. I have that tool and used it a few times, works great
@jamesgordon7608
@jamesgordon7608 11 ай бұрын
So then those style ims bearing that require your tool. Still have that same problem of grenadine. Seemed like everything was really good. Till you showed up with your correct tools and knowledge. LOL.
@Harryrcb
@Harryrcb 11 ай бұрын
they do although they are not as prevalent to fail as the earlier ones. I have changed about a dozen of the newer ones and they all showed signs of excessive wear. BTW I closed my shop about 2 years ago but still have all the tools. I might be tempted to sell you the setup although you can rent them from EPS (european parts solution) they also sell the roller bearing which I believe is a much better solution than others that i have tried on hundreds of vehicles. I specialized in Porsche only and the roller bearing from EPS was the only one that II never had problems with.
@dkjens0705
@dkjens0705 10 ай бұрын
Just park the car at a slant with the nose up so the IMS bearing is not submerged in engine oil while parked and oil doesn't run into and get trapped inside the IMS and eventually turns acidic and washes out the bearing lubricant.
@Harryrcb
@Harryrcb 10 ай бұрын
I like your idea lol, however the Porsche engineers thought of that and put seals on both sides of the bearing so that just enough oil gets in to wash out any grease but not enough to actually lubricate it. , after all it was supposed to be a "lifetime" bearing
@dkjens0705
@dkjens0705 10 ай бұрын
@Harryrcb I've taken many m96 and m97 engines apart and when changing IMS bearing always found rather bad smelling acidic oil inside the IMS. The IMS bearing would mostly go bad on garage queens, not on daily drivers or even cars that were tracked. Cars parked for weeks at a time i figure will accumulate more oil inside the shaft to go bad and wash the lubricants out of the bearing.

You should use a safety strut on the back of the 911 when raised on the 2-post lift. Also make sure if the lift has a pair of longer arms and a pair of shorter arms, the back end (heavy end) of the car is lifted by the short arms. Typically this involves backing up the car on the lift.

You heard wrong. The saying goes like this: "There is no such thing as a budget Porsche, only a budget FOR a Porsche." And PORSCHE stands for Plenty Of Racing Should Cause Heavy Expenditure. If I told you how much I spent on my 928 over 12 years of ownership, you would not believe me. The newest information about the IMS bearing is as follows: The reason it can fail is due to drivers failing to drive aggressively enough when going hills. If you allow the car to stay in a high gear, with low revs while driving up a hill, the bearing can fail eventually. But if you change down a gear, raise the revs higher than the automatic would normally, then your IMS will never fail. Period. Edit: Great to see you got the full leather package with the leather covered binnacle. The base level trim is... basic, and if you cover the Porsche logo on the wheel with your hand, it feels like you are sitting in a cheap Lexus from the 90s. Nice buy. 31:40 - Yep. 95% of all engine damage occurs in the first 15 seconds after startup - but only about 9 seconds for a 996 - because it's a horizontal motor and oil pressure reaches the heads much quicker. But another 4% of damage takes place before the engine warms to normal. So, keeping a 996 under 3,500 rpm when cold is a tremendously good idea. God job.

The ticking sound of the "new" engine, combined with smoke out of one exhaust looks like a cylinder liner failure about to happen. "Kolbenkipper" we call it in Germany, when the piston has worn out the cylinder to an oval shape and can get stuck while moving. Was really noticable on my Targa after 230.000km with the original, unopened engine. Sadly, the ticking got so loud that it was better not to drive it any further. It did still feel and run well, but there was a chance of catastrophic engine failure at every run, and you don't want that on the Autobahn at 280km/h. So it had to go, its parts will help other 996 live on now.

I bought my 2000 996 pre-Covid for slightly more - silver with black interior, 6 speed short shift kit, IMS bearing done, white dials, had some front bumper damage, and some interior wear & tear. I could have spent double on a "nicer" one, but I've done very light work - traded rims, duck tail, sport steering wheel, sport exhaust, intake and some other engine tweaks. I've done brakes and will do some suspension work. It is an outlaw and I do auto cross, have taken it out to Laguna Seca and drive it to work and on weekends. It's an incredible car and SO much fun to drive, especially on back roads, yet I've shown it at Monterey Car Week, Werks and local car shows. It's my modern taken on an '73 RS tribute! I love everything about it. It's easily more than doubled in value! The only thing I regret is not buying a turbo since they cost so much more these days. But this is a sleeper classic. Not the fastest, but sub 6 seconds 0-60. The drive, though.....the drive...and the sound!!!

That replacement engine started playing the Mortal Kombat theme when they were turning it over for the first time... I was looking for Raiden to lightning bolt onto the screen.

First off im happy you kept the porsche original and not ls swapped.. When it comes to ur new motors lines being cut, when ordering stuff from a salvage yard we expect that the client has all the lines they need ready being that u disconnected everything from the motor side when u removed it from the vehicle.. as a salvage yard tech we cut all hoses to get the motor out as fast as possible and also with the expectation that the client has all lines replaced or waiting when installing the motor. You can’t expect perfect from a salvage yard motor.

That was massively entertaining. Seeing the colour of that oil coming out of the Porka was the stuff of nightmares. You did an amazing job sorting the car though, well done 👍👍

I know many hate the 996 but I consider it a necessary step in the evolution of the 911 before the 997 chassis. I have a 2002 996.2 and with the 3.6 liter M96 rated at 320hp the car feels like it makes a touch more. On the scales it weighed in just under 2900 pounds, a smidge heavier than my Son’s VW Corrado SLC. I’m happy to see you saved it without swapping in an LS. I know it’s not cheap to save these cars. But I love the character of the M96. I love the brute force torque delivery of the LS - (I also own a 2000’ Pontiac FireHawk Trans-Am) but I think the M96 is a great little motor when the idiotic engineering choices are fixed on it. The later model M96 doesn’t allow you to replace the ims the way it is on the 98’ to 04’ versions, no thanks to the lip in the case, but those 05’+ engines aren’t known for having those issues. Popping the seal on the ims was the right thing to do. The only issues the 05’ + engines have is bore score which is less catastrophic in that you can still use the engine case, just needs sleeves. I sub’d you guys did a great job man, and after a. I’ve detail you’ll have a great daily. These cars are awesome for daily use.

Total win, for the price of a used Honda you have a kick-ass Porsche 911 with racing wheels.

The 996.1 is a superb car! With a good exhaust one of the nicest sounding too. Other faster, more expensive cars have come and gone, including a 911 Turbo, but my 996.1 has stayed with me for over 12 years now 👌🏻 I've had almost no issues with it in that time, it's currently at about 130k miles and drives perfectly.

WOW! You didnt LS swapped the poor thing! It's still a porsche, and I love it! Something different from every other youtube video where LS swapping a car is the way to go on everything. 1+Sub This is the kinda stuff Im into, I'd love to get my hands on a cheap 911 996 and build something interesting out of it while keeping it a Porsche... Exhaust, better suspension, some GT3 bits here and there...

A early at any price is a win. I admit I'm biased owning a 1997 996 3.4 manual with 225k KM with a new gearbox, and a new 2021 997 AT engine with only 15k km. A manual early cable driven 996 is the most fun for any money. It's pure driving pleasure. Enjoy!!!

FYI, When doing a rear engine/front mounted radiator engine car. A Vacuum should be pulled to ensure there is no air in the system, if not there will always be issues.
