!!SCRAPPED RARE!! 1984 Renault Alliance Encore!!

When was the last time you passed one of these going down the road? Some of you will say "never" and its a shame. A shame that you couldn't see these cracker boxes literally rust as they rolled. A car that Kia would laugh at, and even Nissan wouldn't warranty. But hey, its from a period in time thats long gone, before cell phones and the social media nightmare that has us in our clutches. Back when your car was a testimate to your persona, much more then it is now. Its a very cool little car thou, and I'm glad this one rolled in today. It takes you back, makes you think, and lets you remember. So ladies and gentlemen, Next time your in a junkyard, scrapyard, museum, or Kia Trade in section, and you see a Renault, tip your hat... and remember.

Holy hell that is my step brothers old car. He came to live with us in NH in the mid 90’s my parents bought him that car. He didn’t stay long before he went back to NC. I am 100% sure that is his old car. How weird is that!!!

I love this car - here in germany it was called "Renault 11" and my neighbour had one as a Diesel Renault 11 GTD. They were the first Renaults that didn't rust so fast.

My mom bought an 83 Alliance in the summer of 85. Alliance (R9) was the sedan, Encore (R11) was the hatchback. My grand parents had owned an (R5) "Le Car" followed by an 18i sedan that were reasonably reliable. She expected the same with the Alliance. Not so! The car was attractive and comfortable, but I remember it to be painfully slow (even by 1985 standards and with a 5 speed ) and utterly unreliable. There was a transmission bushing that kept failing that made it very hard to shift. The last straw was the 5th gear synchro failing on a long trip that gave her the choice of holding shift lever in 5th or driving in 4th gear at 55mph and about 5000 rpm! Funny, she replaced it with a 4cyl. 1983 VW Quantum that was more substantial but not much faster. They don't call the early 80's "the malaise era" for nothing.

Your very correct. I had friends that had the them. There was ALWAYS something braking on them, and was the slowest car on the road, but they were decent looking, and surprisingly comfortable cars... and popular too. One friend had a super rare... even back then... "turbo charged" Fuego. "Enter the Turbo Zone" was there advertising logo. I am going to call him right now to see if it's still sitting in his back field.

Very cool! Definitely start it up! The 1.4 (Cleon fonte) engine is virtually indestructible. The carb versions always start. For this injection...we will see. The French Renault 9 / 11 built cars are mechanically very good no matter what people will tell you. The AMC built ones, apparently not so much? I have never seen one myself.

Had an '84 Alliance and I really liked it. Good handling, fantastic gas mileage. Actually had an oil level gauge on the dash! Only real flaw was overheating but I figured out how to fix that. Had about 150,000 miles when I gave it to my father, and he drove it for a number of years after that.

Okay I will be brief. The hood , front grille and front bumper cover are from an 1983 Renault Alliance. As you pointed out the inside of the hood and parts of the front bumper cover were red. Yes the car is a 1984 Renault Encore the Encore grill had a slightly different grille the Renault diamond was off to the left rather than in the center. And the emision labels on the inside of the hood are for an 1983 model. It was badly sprayed bombed with tan paint. This car had a lot of work done to it in the 1991-1992 range. That is when they were very common in the junkyards. They probably got the parts cheap. They salvage yard owner was glad to sell the parts! I remember going to auto salvage yards in the early 1990's with my dad and these were very common in the salvage yards. The last one I seen running was around 1999.

I think that these 1.4 engines were also used in the Volvo 340 of the early eighties. My dad had an 83 Volvo 340 and that was a Renault unit.

I recognized it immediately, because back in 1984, my best friend's mother bought it new and the same exact color, only it was a notch-back. It was a cheap and compact car by yesterday's standards, (even at the age of 14, I had to crawl in slowly to fit in the back) but at least it had a lot more metal in it than today's disposable plastic jobs. We had lots of fun, and she took us to a lot of places in that little car!

1.4 liter was the really crappy base engine. (1.7 liter was optional). The sedan version started at CAN$6450 in Canada (1983 model year, manual 4 speed). Everything was an option - even the rear window defroster. That car pretty much killed the Renault name in North America. (It was assembled in an old AMC plant, with engine / transmission imported from France)

These were known as a Renault 11 in the UK. In the 80’s and 90’s there were tons of them on the roads here...now there are practically none. Btw to help you say Renault just say “Rennow” like “Minnow” but with a “Ren” 😂

As a mechanic in training, theres no chance for the car to start in its current state, basicly the gas has seperated entirely, no longer gas, the tank and pump im sure are rusted up by now. Oil, coolant and power brake fluid also need to be flushed out as well. The ignition coil is also probably bad, and si much more

In 1984 I was 20yrs old and worked at a Jiffy-Lube in Kitchener, Ontario Canada. They had a contest of some sort going on and 1st prize was one of these 1984 Renault (Pronounced "renn-oh") Alliance Encores. The dealers gave every participating shop one of these to display in front of the shop to promote the contest...I used to have to drive it out front every morning, and drive it into the safety of the shop at closing time....Same as you, I thought "What a basic POS this is!"..Lol..Of course, at the time I had a 1979 (last of the huge, full-size) Ford Thunderbird Town-Landau Edition. Fully loaded! Loved that car! The Encore just didn't compare...Lol! Thanks for the memory!!

Actually had a Renault Alliance back in 86 and drove to Los Angeles from New Jersey with it, no problem.I loved that car, a great drive and fun. Unfortunately it ran hot and a small leak in radiator caused a quick engine seize. Wasn't worth fixing since they stopped making them and would have been an expensive fix for me in those days. If I still had it I would have restored it now.

Very rare. I grew up outside of DC, where odd-ball cars tended to be more common than in most areas and I don't seem to remember seeing one other than on the lots of the Jeep/Eagle dealer. Example of odd-ball cars: there were a bunch of the bicentennial edition Vegas running around and it wasn't unusual to see VW Kammbacks, wagons and Karmann-Ghias as daily drivers. There were a few Bricklins, too. Remember the Bitter? Occasionally, I would spot one at the shopping center. On nice days, I'd see a gentleman next to me in morning traffic driving his late-30's Packard Limo/LWB Sedan....

For a laugh I figured I'd check Rock Auto thinking even they wouldn't have parts for this thing. They do. Lots of them too! Tons of different sets of spark plug wires, water pumps, fuel injectors, all the filters. Even the weird fan motor! That place never ceases to amaze me.

In 1985 my Dad bought the European version of this car, a Renault 11 TXE 'Electronic' it was black , sqaushy and it talked to you, a bit like K.I.T.T lite. It had a 1.7 engine with a 5 speed manual, and to an 11 year old it was awesome.

Renault cars are all over Europe. They even made tanks (hence the Cartier Tank watch). Renault was actually the first manufacturer to make a hatchback. In the USA maybe a rare but in Europe a legend.

Renault 11, lots of parts here in Argentina, except for doors, here all 11s were 4-door models. there was a turbocharged model. 11 had a near related model, the Renault 9, widely used for taxis here un 1990s. 1.6 liter, 4-cyl.

The Renault Alliance and Encore were produced from 1983-1987, the last year of 1987, the Encore named was dropped soo all 1987 models were called Alliance. They came in 2 door sedans, 4 door sedans and 2 door convertibles in the Alliance model, 2 door and 4 door hatchbacks in the Encore model. They had 3 different 4 cylinder engines, the 1.4, the 1.6 and the 2.0, the 2.0 was standard on the Alliance GTA. The cars were sold through AMC dealerships, they were revolutionary cars for their time, built by the french and sold through an American automaker.

In Europe they were not rare at the time but by now it is. It's sure worth to save it. Just restore it that everythings works and someone will use it as a second car for the small distances. Used and new parts may be rare in the US but not that rare in Europe.

My girlfriend bought a used one in 85. It was a coupe with an automatic. I hated that car. You had to bleed the cooling system otherwise it was guaranteed to overheat. Little did I know, the car was ahead of its time. Made out of tons of cheap plastic parts and weird engineering. it was quite different from the early to mid 70s cars that we were used to driving and working on. Now it seems so simple to work on compared to new cars. Considering what was going on back in those days, the car wasn't really that bad for the money.

A friend of mine's mother had an R11 1.7l. She once blew a water hose and drove the car till it stopped. When she got it started again she drove it again till it stopped. Then she had it towed home. The pipe was replaced and the car ran problem free for years afterwards. Toughest engine I ever saw. Also I find the "unreliability" issue quite interesting since in South Africa they were quite durable and reliable. In fact even up to today those that are still around is mostly rust free.

Back in 1986 I painted cars for the Butler Auto Auction near Pittsburgh, PA. We got thousands of these Renaults in from across the country. Maybe 10% started in winter, they tended to junk out at around 70k and were the joke of the day. Many of them were just pushed through the auction that we couldn't get to run long enough to make it through. We used to say the only reason they had rear window defrosters was to keep your hands warm while pushing them. Only way to get em above 85 mph was to push them off a cliff. Terrible cars. A.M.C. Badged as a Renault 11 over here in Europe, it was a lottery whether the leisurely performance of the car would allow you to get you to your destination before the famed water-soluble bodywork had turned to dust. There's a reason they're rare..

Here in Argentina we had the Renault 11 Turbo 4 door. I'm looking forward into getting one. These things last forever, they simply don't die. At least by how tuff they made them here. Same for almost all Renaults from that era. We don't get the safest nor the most powerful cars, but they are reinforced for shittier conditions. I also love the Renault 21 aka the Medallion.
