I did this to my dodge 2500 about 7 years ago. I was getting sick at the time and wasn’t thinking right. Caught it before I even started the engine. Drained 25 gallons of gas and probably 10 of diesel out into 5 gallon tanks and buckets right there at the pump. Of course it was winter so I laid there on the slushy concrete pad draining via the sump I had previously installed - that helped a lot. Changed the filter and started her up. I was frozen and sick as a dog after that. I used some of it for fires like you did and ran a bunch through my lawn mower. That mower wasn’t very happy about it and the mosquitoes were equally unhappy. Needed new plugs in it afterward but it was a pretty cool smoke show. The best part was - as I was leaving the gas station I took the turn on to the main road a little too quick and dump a few buckets of that mix all over the truck bed and down onto the road.

I had to do this at a gas station. Bought some fuel hose and I had an empty oil jug laying around in the car. I disconnected and plugged the lines from the tank and hooked up the send and return on the engine side to the jug. I drove the car back home where I unplugged the fuel send from the tank, extended it into a barrel. I let the engine run on idle from the jug for 15-20 minutes, emptying the tank and most of the fuel system into the barrel using the regular fuel pump. I changed the fuel filter, filled the tank with diesel and hooked the fuel lines back up. This was six months ago, still runs perfect.

I'm ashamed to admit that I misfueled my Mazda 6 diesel with unleaded petrol (gasoline) about 18 months ago. I got to about 15 ltrs before I realised, so then I had a dilema. Here in the UK we have companies that specialise in call outs to fuel stations for people who misfuel their vehicles, they turn up and suck out the fuel tank, but charge around £100 for the service. So you lose the fuel and have to pay the fee. In my case I was also in a screaming hurry so arranging and waiting for the specialist, then coughing up a hundred folding was not something I felt like doing. So, as I hadn't started the engine I decided to fill the tank with diesel. That would be 45 ltrs of diesel to 15 of petrol, I realise this was a risk but one I was prepared to take. It started right up then within 5 or so miles started to run irregularly. I persevered and it cleared up, probably as the mixture of the 2 fuels became more thourough. Two things I noticed subsequently. It was a b1tch to start from cold, and after standing when hot, also, it didn't have it's normal power at higher speeds, it held back under acceleration and wouldn't hold higher speeds. I feared the worst, thinking that the pumps and injectors were getting fcuked up etc. I carried on though, adding more diesel as I used up the contaminated tank and eventually it became better and better, until after a few tanks it was back to normal. So far no lasting ill effects. I reckon I'm very lucky, or Mazda's are tough! I think if a modern common rail diesel is a actually run on neat petrol it would be screwed though.

As diesel engines age and injectors get a little worn they rens to smoke. And that might lead to failing the yearly inspection. A common trick is to fill the thank with 20-30% gasoline since it contains a bit less energy, therefore reduces smoke. Have dove it with a few diesels and never seem to have hurt anything. Another trick is to fill up with HVO100 which is a biodiesel that is in fact “hydrogenated vegetable oil” which is waaaay cleaner since it consists of pretty much 1 molecule and not like 300-400 as regular diesel. So it burns incredibly clean and odorless and doesn’t smoke almost no matter what. 😎

Sam you never cease to amaze me in the tasks you take on and they turn out really good. I worked for UPS years ago and one of the jobs I did was drive a semi that had Cummings diesel engines. The first thing we did when we pulled into the yard was to fuel up. A new driver who did not know any better started to put regular gas in the tank. I will never forget the head mechanic running across the yard screaming at that driver to shut off the fuel pump. I think he stopped right away and they drained the tank and it turned out ok. I think it was lucky that the driver did not start up the vehicle. Good job!!!!!

That is until you drive an older vehicle that was made when people weren’t idiots kinda and is designed to take high volume pumps for gasoline. @@fullraph I put about 1/8th gallon of DEF into my diesel tank before I realized it...first time I did it in 120K miles. I don't buy the jugs, I get it from the pump in the diesel lanes the semi trucks use. I was able to get home without problem since it was still over 22 gallons of fuel compared to a cup or two of DEF. I let it settle out overnight then went under the tank to unscrew the plug which is there to drain any accumulated water.

Worked on a "76 custom Dodge van with the same problem (in the "80s), only the other way around. Gas engine filled with diesel. Same fix. Drain tank, fill with gas. Flush lines, remove & flush carburetor, change spark plugs. Also did an oil change as this van was driven on the interstate from the fueling point until it died. Crank the piss out of it, immediately drive 100 miles. Smoked like a crematorium for a while, but was still running fine a couple of years after.

The worst part of this, if you took that back to BMW, they'd want $10-15k to fix that car. Friend worked at VW about six years ago and someone had a tdi golf towed in because they filled up with gasoline and the car died a couple miles down the road. Vw wanted to replace everything from the lift pump to the injectors, that bill was about $9k. 😮

Well, the old scrap qualification worked well enough to get the beamer going again. I would be a little concerned about the pump being scored from the gasoline, even in a mile of drive time. Chances are it would be ok, but I'm no beamer mechanic, and the concern would still be there. May be good insurance to change it out if research still leaves doubt in mind. That kind of stuff bugs me and if the pump isn't a stupid amount of money to change out, I might consider a new one to save the injectors from getting trashed and the rest of the fuel system full of metal. That diesel gas works wonders for roastin' your weenie!
@thesteelrodent1796
@thesteelrodent1796 Жыл бұрын
The pumps are made from the same metal no matter if it's a diesel or gasoline injection. That part really shouldn't care what the fuel is. The seals may be a different story, but as long as you don't dump E85 in it, I don't see why it would be damaged.
@mediocreman2
@mediocreman2 Жыл бұрын
@@thesteelrodent1796The high pressure pump needs lubrication gasoline can't provide. Actually modern low sulphur diesel can't even provide it. But if he's a diesel mechanic he probably knows that the CP4 pumps can't handle low lubricity fuel and he probably already is using a lubricity additive.

Today's fuel seems to have very little lubricant.

You need to run additives to keep the high pressure fuel pump of the commonrail happy so much for lubricity...

You think the driver saw the gas cap, read diesel and just though "huh that's funny" and filled her up?

NEVER put diesel in a red can or gasoline in a yellow can. As long as it didn't run too long on gasoline, it SHOULD be OK. Gasoline doesn't lubricate so there can be damage.

A mile, you're fine. You've basically just accidentally cleaned the system out by using petrol ha

Prices are so disgusting nowadays that Red diesel is just as expensive as normal, some crook thought HMM? they're probably gonna put it in their car anyway, Oh let's just make it the same price then, of course it's more expensive as there are oil shortages, but it isn't just that they're ripping you off too they're making it more expensive, shortage or not, than it actually needs to be cause they want stupid levels profit

that pump is fine and it is no where near 10000 to 20000 psi ,it is at most maybe 100 to 160 psi and all it controls is the fuel shut off and timing of the injectors

The HPFP on a BMW diesel automobile outputs, depending on demand, 2,200 psi maximum.

I just gave it a google- With 39,000 psi (2,700 bar) capability, the CP4 can meet even the most stringent diesel emission standards
