I work at a country club in maintenance and every holiday our department helps with little side projects to help liven the place up for the season. This is such an awesome idea! I'm really looking forward to making something that looks really unique, is surprisingly simple, and only requires a band saw. I'm really trying to set myself apart in this job, so I seriously appreciate ideas like this.

Extremely sorry. I came up with that reindeer design in 1979, published it in Hands On! magazine, and it has plagued craftsmen and craftswomen ever since. Completely destroyed all the excuses we used to make to throw away scrap wood.

Stupid question that may have been covered and I missed it. For future reference does blade drift change based upon the blade size you use… I.e could I just leave a line on there for reference? Or should it be done each time (I own a Shopsmith if that matters). Love the channel. Well done to you and your crew!
@WorkshopCompanion2 жыл бұрын
Blade drift is different for every blade and, on some band saws, for different installations of the same blade. Drift depends on a number of factors, but the most important are the set of the teeth and tracking adjustment of the upper wheel. Owing to the ways in which band saw blades are manufactured, the set of the teeth is not always the same on both sides of the blade, so the blade will cut ever-so-slightly more aggressively on one side or the other, causing the cut to drift a degree or three toward the aggressive side. And if the blade rides the crown of the upper wheel too far forward or too far back, this may also cause drift. In fact, some craftsman recommend you correct for drift by adjusting the blade tracking. I don't do this for two reasons. First, it can cause the blade to run out-of-square front-to-back, and you'll no longer get clean inside corners where two cuts must meet. And second, it's absolutely impossible on some saws, the Shopsmith included. The tracking is automatic. So I used the method I demonstrated in the video -- and I do it each time I have a resawing task before I resaw, just so there are no surprises.
@brentfowler23172 жыл бұрын
Do you think that a 3/8" blade works work instead of the 5/8"? My smaller bandsaw I don't believe a 1/2" blade will fit. Or anything larger of course.
@WorkshopCompanion2 жыл бұрын
3/8" will work. You might have a little extra sanding to do, but nothing that time-consuming. Just make sure you use a skip-tooth blade to help the chips clear.

Go to a crafts show -- ANY crafts show. There's a business on Etsy that sells (almost) nothing but these deer. ($35 a pop!) You may think this is benign, but you remember that Star Trek episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles?" Think about that when oversize versions of these things start popping up everywhere as lawn ornaments.
