Another triumph mate, superb modelling. The cellar entrance was a nice touch. I used the Peco OO gauge canopy roofs on Rodneybridge which didn't look out of scale for a 4 platform station. With your skills though I suspect Chandwell's terminus station will be a scratch built masterpiece.
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 3 жыл бұрын
Now now Jason, don’t go putting any pressure on me! 😂 I’m starting with the back of the station. It’s almost 1.5 metres and when I put the mocked-up pub there it really hits home how vast a space it is in N Scale. My idea is a massive, long, works building like at Doncaster station if you’ve ever been there. Possibly with a bridge from the Works, over the station, and down onto the alley at the side of the station. I’m considering using a forced perspective method to add depth, but this needs lots of mocking up and thought because if not done right it will look naff and I may not be able to achieve it. Anyway... I’d best make a start! 😂 - Michael

Thank you! It’s always a toss up between slowing down the content into longer sections or multiple videos, or trying to cover the whole thing in an interesting way. I tend to go more for the quick overviews than detailed tutorials as I am never sure how many people would be interested in the detail. But as you mentioned with the glue, maybe people would find that interesting. Maybe I can look at breaking out certain parts into separate videos, e.g. how I use glue, how I wrap textures round card, how I do roofs, etc... do you think that would work...? I really value your comments and ideas, so keep them coming. -Michael.

Thank you Stephen. I think the palette of colours and styles is starting to come together and pay off. Based on this, I have decided to throw away the layered backscene I did and keep the back area more simple and in-keeping with the rest of the buildings. Hopefully you will see what I mean once I start on the ‘station end’ but at the moment, I am like you were... don’t yet have the fully-formed picture in my mind of what I want. All the best, and thanks for watching, Michael.

What a build! I used to have a great deal of trouble cutting curves smoothly until I started using washers as templates - not just washers, but jam jar lids, tea plates, coke can tops, etc; depending on the size of the curve (you can always find something that works.) I found that after a light pass with the knife around the edge of whatever template I was using, it could be disposed with since the knife would keep to the groove made with the first pass on later cuts. Great idea with the card downpipes, but I found wire (0.5 mm in N scale represents 3 inch pipe) works even better. Using thin strips of masking or packing tape (cut about 0.5 - 1mm thick) and wrapped around the wire makes very convincing pipe joins once you've secured them to the wire with a dab of superglue. Again, a fabulous build and thanks for posting. Stay well.
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul. Great idea re the cutting templates. Next time I’m in need of a curve, I will remember that. I’ve shied away from wire downspouts for no reason other than it’s new and I’m resistant to change! But that is just silly really so perhaps for the ‘Station End’ I will look into using wire. What kind do you use? I have piano wire but it’s really difficult to cut. Thanks again for watching, and for the thoughtful advice. It’s much appreciated. -Michael.
@pauljames9626

@@Chandwell Hi Michael, I use ordinary, galvanised steel wire which you can get in a range of diameters fairly cheaply. Other people have used florist's wire (slightly more expensive) and even the brass / nickel silver wire used in etched brass kit making and scratchbuilding, but this is absurdly expensive to use - as is using that "Evergreen" styrene rod. All of the preceeding can be cut and bent well enough with a simple pair of pliers. You may want to take a look at Paul at Galgorm Hall who does an excellent description of making downpipes for scratchbuilds here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nne9enibmcyCaas or Gormo at Great Chesterford Junction who describes his method here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHO0m4aaa52dq9U Gormo has a different treatment of how to model pipe joins which will be easier in the smaller scale. I'm a big fan or wire downpipes, since they stand a little proud of the building and add a bit of depth in what would otherwise be a flat surface. I hope these links help.

The building looks amazing, and the interior details really add life to it when it's lit up. That's one of the things I enjoy doing with HO scale buildings, when you can look in the windows and see that there's actually something going on in there. HO scale is one thing; to get that level of detail in N scale is something else altogether. Hats off to you for that. That said, the one "thumbs-down" must be from somebody who's had to either drywall ceilings or do hardwood flooring in odd-shaped rooms, and the shape of your building brings back all the traumatic memories.

Thank you for your kind and well-considered words. What you said about the thumbs-down really made me laugh. Heart-felt apologies to that poor soul! 😂😂😂

Absolutely love this model, it's superb. The sign with the incorrect punctuation was great. At Christmas you could consider adding a "hand written" sign bearing the legend "Xmas Reaves" just as one of our locals had a few years ago. It's a Tesco now, though I'm not sure that sign had anything to do with it. Looking forward to the next video!

Hahah now there’s a plan. I imagine the future for The Weir is a Weatherspoons makeover sometime in the next twenty years and the locals will no longer have access to the “Best Pie’s in Chandwell”!

I was once in The New Bee Hive about 20 years ago. I have little recollection of it, but given it’s precise location, a very likely prototype for Chandwell grimness. Superb modelling as always!

Haha - brilliant. I've never been there, but it looks full of character. Still lit by gas, apparently...?

Superbly detailed, its that attention to all the smaller pieces that makes the overall look - stunning - with a clever mix of materials and products. It has a charm and a menace about it. Perfect. Just like pubs of that era. Great upload. The one pence really shows how small N scale is to work with. All the best. Brian @ The Angels.

Fantastic piece of model making. I'm still playing with Metcalfe and Scalescenes kits. Think it'll be awhile before I have the confidence to scratch build anything that complex. Well done.

Thank you Gaz! I started out with Scalescenes kits - they taught me so much. You may have recognised some of the Scalescenes methods in this video. You'll be scratch building in no time - just enjoy the process! --Michael.

That's a great idea! It wasn't until very recently that I began to realise that my videos are watched from people all over the world, and I have been thinking about what I could use to convey size in a meaningful way. A peanut is a good idea! Thank you! --Michael

Hi Michael, Wow! 🤩 absolutely brilliant build, I love the attention to detail, my favourite part is the cellar, it really adds something to the whole scene. The downpipes are brilliant, I recently had a search for some n gauge gutters and drains (you’ll see in my next video) and I didn’t even think of something so simple - brilliant! Looking forward to seeing what’s next! All the best, Geoff

Thank you Geoff. I’m looking forward to your video. It’s been a while since I have seen Pride Parkway... I was pleased with how well the downspouts worked out. On Ironbridge works, I just folded some dark grey printed paper in half and made the gutters with that. It looks good enough. I’m looking forward to seeing what you manage to achieve. I am a bit daunted by my next project. The ‘station end’ is about 1.5 metres long. That’s 16 Wier Inns side by side and I plan on doing only two buildings, joined by a covered walkway. I’m in the very early stages of thinking about it at the moment but I hope to have something to show in a couple of weeks. Cheers Geoff. Hope all is well. Michael.
