** Video Description **
In this Scratch 3 basics tutorial, we look and list all the different types of event blocks in Scratch programming. We’ll unpack each event block to understand what it does. Essentially, most blocks in the event category are hat blocks, which means that they start a sequence of instructions. Events also enable us to talk between sprites. The way we describe communication between sprites is called event-based programming. We broadcast (or send) messages to whoever is listening. We can use the idea of a walkie talkie to understand this concept. Someone can talk into a walkie talkie on a frequency. That’s cool, but if there isn’t anybody listening on the same frequency then nobody will hear the message. Many people can tune into the same frequency to hear the message. Once we hear the message, we can respond to it.

SCRATCHY QUESTION: How do you go about naming your events in Scratch? Do your names describe what the event does, or are you a little more random with your naming convention?

i've used scratch since 2018 or 2019 but i'm still trying to figure out how to stop events when the player does something

Hi Kale, thanks for your message. Events that generated by a player are usually user-triggered. That means a button click or a keypress. You can always wrap your code using an if-block with a boolean condition. For instance, if the player clicks the mouse, that might fire an event. You may not want anything to happen, so you can wrap the code with an if block. Pseudocode is something like: when space is pressed if condition is true do the thing you wanna do This way, you need BOTH the user event AND the boolean condition to execute the code. Hope this helps and isn't too confusing.

Hi funny animations, thanks for your feedback. These tutorials try to strike the balance between direct explanations and worked examples to give the blocks some context. I can hear that you would like some more direct explanation. I would encourage you to check out the links to the Scratch wiki in the description of the video, as that will tell you exactly what each block will do. It was my reference for making the videos :) For instance, here is the wiki page for this tutorial: en.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Events_Blocks Keep hitting that pause and rewind button if something didn't make sense and be sure to check out the starter projects that are linked to some videos. Your feedback is important to me, and will shape the production of future ones. 🙌 SurfS
