I saw this years ago, when I was a kid, and couldn't understand what it was about, so switched it off. But I watched it again last night and it was much better than I'd remembered it. It's a confusing film but you have to stick with it.

Best researched and most insightful (and funny) review of this film I've come across. Everybody in the film is superb from the largest to the smallest parts. Next to Vincent Price, my favorite performance in the film is by Marshall Jones as Konratz. He nearly steals the show. Gordon Hessler must've told Jones to play Konratz like he was a James Bond villain. I love that Fritz Lang was a big fan of the film.

I saw what might have been that film poster when I was a kid - a woman immersed in liquid turned into a skeleton. It would have been the early 1970s. Or it might have been another film, possibly with the poster inspired by this one. My memory was of a skeletonised woman in what looked like a bath. It was definitely left an imprint, which is why I still remember it.

I, like Geoff, saw this when I was but a nipper (1976 I reckon, when I would have been 7/8 - I'll ask Prof Sheldon Hall, who knows everything) and I definitely made it all the way to the end. I was already a huge horror buff and I loved this madcap genre-bending, mind-feck-of-a-thang, and so did quite a few of us when it came to playground discussions. It was bloody years till I saw it again, but it was always on the list when VHS arrived. All the greats are there, and Stendsgaard. Got to say, Vincent Price had some ace movies, 1970-73... and this is one of them. Nuts. Fab review. Subscribed!

It didn't make a lot of sense to me when I watched it either, but that was on broadcast TV. I never realized that the killer was the space administrator from Lifeforce. The thing I remember most is that during the car chase, there's a clip of Alfred Marks saying "Right. Pick him up" or somehting like that that's repeated at least once. I tend to like Christopher Wicking's work, particularly Frankenstein: The True Story.

Is this movie trying to ride the coat-tails of 'Blow Up'? I was two years old in 1970, so I don't know what the drugs scene was like then, but this sounds like a trip movie (at least to me). Despite your sterling efforts to put this movie into some kind of context, Tony, I'm just baffled.

As an impressionable kid I became fixated on it and fascinated by it. Every time it raised it's head on TV from the mid-seventies on I grabbed every opportunity to revisit it. Each time I'd come away with a different thought or theory, Was it someone's fever dream or drug-fueled nightmare, was it a Franz Kafka inspired political tract, or just a mad and messy horror-fantasy whipped up quickly on a limited budget and short shooting schedule? In truth, I doubt I'll ever know for certain, but it's always been one of my key movie memories. Thanks, as always, Numinous20111. Happy New Year! T.
