What I find striking about "Anxiety" is the face of the chap on the left of the painting. It always struck me as a non-human face, and it always seemed to me that it reveals some truth about the whole scene.

Another way to interpret Love and Pain is as a transfiguration of the earlier Sick Child. With the same collapsed gesture. What is most telling is the way his embrace appears out of alignment and to miss its apparent object. He is frozen while the ‘vampire’ attempts to breathe a kind of life into his corpse. Here we are confronted and haunted by a similar indeterminacy as we see in the ‘pin-prick’ eyes that induce such anxiety on the bridge; and those that do look at us seem dead.
