Not to take anything away from Rebecca's amazing speech, or to give Rupert too much credit, but my theory is that meeting went EXACTLY how Rupert wanted it to go. Watch him during the meeting and you can tell that he's not on board. Rebecca is not convincing HIM of anything. He's WAITING for the speech. He hated the idea of a Super League. Someone who loves football as much as he does, someone who had the story Rebecca shared, would never support that. But he knew he wouldn't be able to rally the troops or appeal to their emotions the way Rebecca did. So he brought her in (reminding her of how he used to sneak into Richmond games, just to make sure the memory was fresh in her mind) then sat back and let her do what she does. It's still Rebecca's victory, because it was ALL her. Choosing to speak up, choosing to fight, that was all her. Rupert just saw her as a weapon to do good in the world and put her in the place where she could benefit the most (while also maintaining his reputation as a cold and evil rich jerk).
@Mauther

I agree. The only I'll add is I think Rupert also invited her as an insurance policy of himself. He was worried that he might succumb to the money argument. Rebecca would remind him of his love of the game. Also, there was no way Ikufe wouldn't rub Rebecca the wrong way.

@@hellen1379 Didn't really think about it consciously - assumed it was part of the heavy-handed Star Wars theme - but if he is sick it might be part of the way Rebecca becomes a 'mother' without the ugly custody battle I was worried might be implied by the ending of th episode (and for all we know Ms. Cakes might be pregnant too).

One thing I've loved about this season is that Ted has taken a backseat for most of it. The show is more about the team and not just Ted. Juno said recently that Jason was one of the main reason that his character feels more in the background to give the rest of the cast more moments and I really respect him for that

I was thinking that too, and I agree--it says a lot about Jason Sudeikis that he's happy to take a back seat. But I think it's also a natural progression of the Lasso way--we focused on him in the beginning, and now we get to enjoy the effects it's had on everyone. This season has been all about payoff, and it's just BEAUTIFUL ❤️❤️❤️

This is the answer for when Ted asked Beard "what are we still doin here?" in ep 1. To see the Lasso way blossom in everyone. Roy had the Ted-speech, Rebecca in this ep.. Keely next maybe to Jack, and Nate. Cherry on top will be Jaymeh best man speech.. Lol

@@movienightwithjacqui It's "The Lasso Way" that Trent got so excited about when they debuted total football - Ted's kindness and inclusivity creates a snowball effect that starts with the team culture but eventually rolls downhill into the lives of the players, the organization, and even its fans (Jeremy getting a job he is happy about).

I don't think that the toy soldier and matchbook scene was about shipping Rebecca with Ted she was just putting those two items on her desk because they were important to her for different reasons and she looked at the soldier because Ted told her that it would be her first line of defense and that's what she needed since she was scared of going to the meeting with all the other club owners.

If that wasn’t the point, then why did the camera focus on the army man, and not the matchbook? Choices are ALWAYS made for specific reasons on this show. The symbolism was definitely Ted/Rebecca related.

@@CWazBroadwayBandGeek i literally said why the camera focused on the toy soldier "she looked at the soldier because Ted told her that would be her first line of defense and that is what she needed since she was scared of going to the meeting with all the club owners" there were literally no romantic implications between Rebecca and Ted this episode I'm not saying can't happen but this episode didn't have them the only romantic implications that were about Rebecca where with Sam and their interaction in the hallway with her saying she's sorry that he didn't get called for the national team. Watch the scene again there are no romantic undertones at all she she put both things down on the table looks at them fondly but then gets a text from Rupert about the club meetings and she get's scared for a second looks at the toy soldier possibly as a reminder of what Ted told her or as is symbol that she's going into battle after which she text back that she's going to the meeting. Her whole arc this episode is about growth and letting go of her hatred towards Rupert so that he doesn't control her life and her decisions anymore all the little thing she does this episode is about finding courage to go to the club meeting not about a romantic partner. She talks about it with Higgins when she can't find Keeley, she's constantly trying to find Keeley, she looks at the toy soldier, she also does silly faces in the mirror and eventually she ends up going to the meeting a where she finally gets a text from Kelly that reminds her to be brave and not be scared of these men who once where scared little boys and that was the catalyst for her realize a why she wants to do things now she doesn't want to do them to spite Rupert anymore she wants to do them now because she loves her club, she loves her players, she loves the fans and she wants to win for them not to beat Rupert. If that's not enough meaning to a scene for you then remember the last time we saw the toy soldier was when she was about to tell Higgins not to post the paparazzi pictures while looking at the toy soldier but then she saw news about Rupert and threw the toy soldier to the ground and decide it tell him to post the pictures so bringing the toy soldier back now symbolizes her growth and that she's not letting Rupert control her life anymore by looking at it finding bravery and saying yeah responding that she's going to the meeting.

The Rupert and Rebecca stuff was a reminder that despite him being horrible to her and a dick they actually had good times when they were together. Her bringing up his story opened up the old times in his head and how they once felt about each other. They aren't together or friends now but they can acknowledge the past and the good times they once had.

I think one of the great joys in Jade's relationship with Nate is telling him jokes in a dead pan way to Nate (who we know is not good at discerning what is a joke) to enjoy seeing him try to figure out what is funny. The Polish joke alluded to in this episode, "Mr. Shelby" in the last episode. Even when she first warmed up to him over baklava and accepted his date, she seemed to enjoy seeing him a little uncomfortable. They have shown us that she is very observant and they are clearly good together, but it is interesting to see where she gets some entertainment.

I don’t think Rupert was just making a cheap play… he is beginning to realize all he’s lost. “Growth” is the perfect theme for this entire series. No one can change their life’s experience. We can only use it to grow… or not. Jason Sudeikis said he had a story to tell and I think he’s almost done. Though, IF Jason finds a story that he can’t NOT tell… I could live with a ‘coda’ single return.🎉

I don't know if that's the planned route but (especially after this episode) I'd _really_ like for Rebecca's final "growth" to be realizing that the club she wanted to destroy because it was the only thing Rupert has ever really loved, is their child - and now she loves it just as much as he did. Her hanging that painting gives me hope that she will realize not everything they shared is tarnished.

Ever since Dani mentioned playing in the El Chapo youth league, I’ve wanted to see a spin off for him. He just keeps making me laugh. I also don’t ship Ted and Rebecca. Partly because I’ve never picked up on any romantic chemistry from them but mostly because this show does such an amazing job of portraying the value of friendship and I feel like if they end up together, it would kind of ruin that for me. It’s so rare for a show to have two main characters who are able to just be amazing supportive friends without any sexual tension at all. I love that.

Jacqui - as usual, I loved the reaction. I want to react to your reaction just a bit... 1) The army man and the matchbook: I think you may be reading more romantic ship into this than there is where Ted is concerned. One thing that Ted has consistently been through 3 seasons is a catalyst. He had been involved in direct action, but in more ways, he has been responsible for helping others to "think different" [obv Apple plug]. I don't know right now if the combinations is a nudge towards acknowledging her feelings for Sam or to pursue happiness in another way - like "our man in Amsterdam"; 2) Nate left the note for Will - but he also laid out the team kit. There is a quick scene of someone letting him out a side entrance unobserved. I think it was just part of doing something nice for Will; 3) Rupert: Rebecca's recollections of a poor kid who ended up making bank and owning the team were really great. I think they were also relevant to where Rupert is now. It's a bit of a trope that money and power corrupt, but there can be an awful lot of truth in it. Someone who was never used to having things or power who ends up having lots of both and then has no idea how to manage themselves - everything becomes a "thing" to obtain / control / possess and then, in many cases, loses value or meaning to that person because they can just get another "thing". I suspect at this point that when Nate resigned, he may have called Rupert out for messing around with his assistant (among others) as something he didn't want any part of, and Rupert decided to get rid of the assistant to avoid another scandal (he may well care about this wife, and he does have a child, which is more of an important thing which he has not had before). SPECIAL NOTE: That WAS Nick Mohammad playing the violin - and it was his IRL wife playing the piano accompaniment. He confirmed this via Twitter; the piece is "Spiegel im Spiegel" by the contemporary composer Arvo Part

I loved the "Uncle's Day" party. Not only because it's amazing to have more Phoebe time, finally meet the Mom/Sister, and get more Roy/Jamie bonding (Yes! More!). But if you think about it, the existence of "Uncle's Day" probably came about when Phoebe's friends were celebrating father's day - we know he's a jackhole and not in the picture, so Phoebe's mom must have redirected that into something like "But you have an Uncle who's better than a father! So we celebrate HIM on 'Uncle's Day'".

Have been clicking refresh on KZbin waiting for your reaction (new to your channel, went back and watched a bunch of your season 3 reactions, I love your passion for the characters).... the cinematography during the Nathan violin scene with Jamie wearing Sam's number, Roy starting to write his note, and Rebecca's Emmy Monologue was just a MASTERPIECE!! I see that plaque- USC School of Cinematic Arts - and I'm very excited for your analysis as someone who knows about the filmmaking process, especially the cinematography.

Well, okay, this totally made my week, and I've been waiting on pins and needles for your reaction! One thing about the whole Nate situation that I find so compelling is that he has not made any big deal about leaving West Ham. He came home to embrace Jade and did not explain what he did in the way of respecting her. He also did not explain it as she was leaving for her trip. His previous self would have required validation for that action. Danny showed his Ranny Dojas, but they did not refer to it. The callbacks are flowing like an open faucet, and it is such a brilliant vehicle to show the growth in everybody. Two episodes are not enough to weave the remainder of this cloth, but I have faith in these writers like no other writing team I've ever seen. I loved Leann's "F*uckwitch" comment to herself, because it revealed that she was interested, and Roy walked away from it, just a Nate walked away from Rupert's temptation. I still believe that Jason is going to do in this show what he could not do in real life ... put his family back together. He and Olivia remain good friends in real life, and co-parent their kids, but she is with Harry Stiles (why?) and he had moved on to Keeley Hazell (Becks). As a writer, we sometimes write the outcome we wanted instead of the actual outcome, and often it makes a better story in our eyes. Dan Patrick recently interviewed both Jason and Brendan, and they each said that neither of them know if it will continue, but they both said they would be happy if it did. The family that this cast has become just might be the family Jason really needs to keep together. It's ironic that it exists because Olivia encouraged him to make the show, told him she thought it would be great. I agree with you that Ted and Rebecca do not belong together as love interests, but she sure as hell belong together as friends. And just as they do in real life, Rebecca and Keeley come to each other's rescue. If nothing else comes from this insanely brilliant show (and we all know it has made an impact on our lives), it has cemented the friendship between the two women stars of this show, the example of how women should be with each other ... Hannah and Juno. Statues should be built of this cast in Richmond's Town Center, as they have already been built in our hearts. Jacqui,, you make rewatching it for the fifteenth time so much better than it should be. Thank you!!!
@kraqah
@kraqah Жыл бұрын
I think Jason being very non committal when answering questions about whether this season will truly be the end speaks volumes on it. Especially when it was announced as the last season. If I were to wager it would be that the arc of Ted at Richmond is over and we probably won't see the character of Ted Lasso again. That being said Im thinking the odds of at least one spin off involving some portion of the cast is extremely high and probably even likely.
@chadbennett7873
@chadbennett7873 Жыл бұрын
@@kraqah Can't disagree. I think part of the past few episodes is weaning us off of Ted ... and so many characters are displaying Ted characteristics to take up the mantle of kindness. Ted has certainly had a positive effect on these people, which was the point. I feel that Ted Lasso has undone a lot of the damage that the "ego-centric" and "mean spirited" characters in comedies like "Married With Children" over the past three decades has done to American society. Ted Lasso is a healing for us all, and it just happened to come during a pandemic when we needed it the most. Apple+ cannot afford to allow this show to go away, so spin-offs like "Roy Kent" would seem very much in line. I think Ted and Beard will return to America, with Nate coming back to Richmond to Coach with Roy.

Sad the show is heading towards the end, but I enjoy your reactions as always. I absolutely agree with your theory about Rebecca realizing the club is her child rather than an actual child. The darksided Mexican National Team version of Dani Rojas is amazing. Somehow the least surprising thing is episode was finding out that Coach Beard owns 17 axes and they all have different uses. That's a very Beard thing. Fun little easter egg: the announcers for the Canada-Mexico game are voiced by Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie. The scene of Rebecca still seeing herself as a little child before she "makes herself big" was incredibly done. The Okufo League was a nod to the Super League that was attempted in 2021. I'd recommend reading into it for more details, but the (sort of) short version of it is the owners of 12 of the most popular clubs across Europe wanted to form a league that they were always guaranteed to be in (regardless of performance) and would make them a ton of money. It would have threatened to be a financial impact to every other league across all the European countries, as well as only be accessible to more well off fans to see the games in person. The owners also issued statements blaming the financial impact of the pandemic as a reason for this league. It was met with resounding opposition from fans, pundits, governing bodies, players, and coaches who all saw that it was nothing more than a greedy cash grab by a dozen clubs that already made more money than just about every team in Europe. Eventually the pressure against it was so great, it was shut down within a couple days.

May was quoting Nietzsche - "You make it up to the top of a mountain, and what's left for me but lightning"?. There are different interpretations but I found this one which I think speaks to Keeley. We cannot really define who we are, until we reach the limits (top of the mountain) of what we are capable of becoming. It is at the point where one stops the journey of gaining knowledge (lightning) and decides “I have enough!” or we take the knowledge and rise above/proceed further than before.

Jacqui, you are a beam of sunshine and I love your reactions and appreciation of the Ted Lasso experience almost as much as I love the show. I was grinning from ear to ear this whole episode. I could watch a whole episode of Higgin’s dark childrens’ movie theories. The Rebecca’s speech was amazing, accompanied by Nate’s violin it brought me to tears, which then overflowed when Nate finally has the talk with his Dad that he’s desperately needed. The redemption in this show is so heartwarming and hope-inspiring, everything this world needs. I am SO happy about Roy and Keeley and also praying Rebecca and Ted remain platonic because healthy male-female friendships without any involvement of romance on tv are so rare. I’m incredibly sad it’s almost over as well. Thank you for another joyous reaction, as always, I’m looking forward your next one!

One thing seems to be for sure, if Ted and Rebecca do end up together, it'll likely happen offscreen as so many moments this season seem to. From Roy and Keeley's reunion, to Nate quitting West Ham, we seem to only get the moments of reaction AFTER something has happened. I still love this show, but it's been frustrating me more than it should this season. Also I know everyone is quick to blame Jack for Keeley's funding being pulled, but Keeley is the head of a PR firm and she didn't want to do PR to clean up her leak scandal. As much as that reflects on her relationship with Jack it also very likely reflects on her as the face of a PR firm even more. "You deserve someone who makes you feel like you've been struck by f*ckin' lightning!"
@jonathanwyman9402
@jonathanwyman9402 Жыл бұрын
I don't think Keeley was reluctant to address the "scandal". It isn't a scandal to her, nor should it be. She addressed it exactly as she has done PR throughout the series, with a modern outlook as opposed to traditional mores.
@joanjobs4359
@joanjobs4359 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanwyman9402 She didn't address it all, publically, as far as we're shown, likely because jack asked her to. Her personal relationship affected her business relationship, which is why it's best not to mix the two. I can't imagine any venture capitalists NOT pulling funding after that scandal. Either way, the whole KJPR arc felt very contrived and hardly worth the time invested for the show.
@jonathanwyman9402
@jonathanwyman9402 Жыл бұрын
I don't understand why you think she should be ashamed. The point they are making is that there is no relationship between Keeley's personal life and her ability to do her job. The video that was stolen from her has no bearing on KJPR... at all. To believe that it does is very closed-minded, 1950s thinking (and Keeley F'ing Jones is not that person). Also, I think the whole KJPR arc is central to the point the show is trying to make.
@joanjobs4359
@joanjobs4359 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanwyman9402 I never once said she should be ashamed or implied it, I was stating that there's consequences beyond feelings or right and wrong and that unfortunately appearances matter in public relations as the whole business is about perception and management of those perceptions, not personal feelings of right and wrong. Damage control is an element of PR and if Keeley demonstrated and inability or unwillingness to do either, SEPERATE from the things Jack wanted her to say, then I am not surprised there were consequences from the VC board. If the show were making the point you claim, it wouldn't be so muddy and having us wonder if it was a vindictive move by Jack which would very much indicate a relationship between personal and business. Now, I'll admit it could be either or, I was only offering a scenario or instance where it's not all just Jack being the worst ex, since we've already got the one dimensional petty billionaire in Edwin Akufo. And if the point they aim to make is personal relationships are separate from business then they also wouldn't have Rebecca coming in as her financial backer to the rescue. Her best friend is still her ex-boyfriend/boyfriend Roy, so much personal and business being separate.

Been meaning to respond for awhile. I really enjoy your reactions to this show, maybe because you're not looking at this from a soccer POV, but as someone with a film production background, who appreciates the writing and how the ensemble have brilliantly developed their characters as the seasons have progressed. Best reaction on KZbin in my opinion. I loved Dani Rojas in this episode. If you follow the game at the international level, players take great pride in representing their countries, but players from Latin America REALLY embrace it, and they do switch on that "You are now my enemy" mentality when they play their club teammates." Dani's was a little extreme and hilarious. Phil Dunster has been brilliant this season as Jaime, a fantastic example of the "Lasso Way," getting a player who was the epitome of arrogance and selfishness, into becoming a sensitive man (some Roy in there as well), who is respectful of others and wants to be part of a team, and even step up as a leader. As Jaime said in season 2 "I just want you to coach me." I never considered that to be both on and off the field. Wonderful work - very subtle over the series. Some things I wonder if they will happen: 1. I think we'll start seeing a more soccer-related story-line for the last couple of episodes - we'll need to find out what the fourth element of Total Football is... 2. I think Man City will feature at some point. We have been witnessing the growth of the characters, a showdown with Manchester City would demonstrate the growth of AFC Richmond, and for Ted as a soccer coach (which we have been seeing more and more this season). There are just too many references to Man City throughout this series to ignore - Man City relegated AFC Richmond in season 1, destroyed Richmond in the FA Cup in season 2, beat Richmond in season 3 - Beard even called Man City Richmond's "White Whale." Plus you have the potential redemption/growth angle of Jaime Tartt leading Richmond to victory over his previous team - maybe even something involving Jaime's dad? I don't know if that story would be considered closed. 3. Will George Cartrick (the SkySports pundit and previous AFC Richmond manager who declared that Rupert was responsible for West Ham's success), be named as West Ham's new manager? 4. Does Nate sneak into an open practice to watch Richmond train, providing the opportunity for Nate and Ted to hash it out, or at least converse? 5. I am dying for Trent's book. How do you think they will deliver it? I've said too much and I have so much more LOL. I'll put a pin in it there. Thanks for your work Appreciate ya
