In Episode 48, Part 3 C Richard will describe how to use the four step EIAG Process to start, develop and strengthen a professional relationship between a mentor and a mentee.
What is a Mentor and a Mentee?
Let’s first define what we mean by a mentor and a mentee. A mentor is a person who has expertise such as a trainer, a supervisor, or an expert who is tasked to teach or train a mentee, a novice, a beginner or a learner to become knowledgeable and proficient in area of skilled or professional practice.
Handout on the Four Step EIAG Reflection Process Between A Mentor and A Mentee
Assumptions: The Mentor and mentee have completed the Get-Acquainted for the Mentor and the Mentee and have discussed and completed the Expectations Negotiation process. Thus, they both know what to expect from each other. Now imagine that the mentor and the mentee have agreed upon a time to reflect upon some event or experience that just had occurred in the work place and let’s call that work place the classroom of the mentor. Let’s further imagine that the mentee and the mentor agree to discuss a particular event that had just taken place in the mentor’s classroom: What is that event, the E? The mentee and the mentor agree to focus on a particular event or experience that had occurred in the classroom, i.e. the classroom discussion the mentee facilitated on the recent Presidential Debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.
Step 1: E= Event or Experience: The mentee and the mentor agree to reflect upon the classroom discussion facilitated by the mentee on the recent Presidential Debate between President Joe Biden and Former President Donald J. Trump.
Step 2: I= Identify what happened: Discuss what you saw, heard and did at the time of the E, the event or experience? Whereas the mentee saw and heard the students in the classroom responding favorably to her discussion prompts, the mentor agreed that he/she saw and heard the students respond positively to the mentee’s. prompts, he/she also noticed that the mentee never used the Quiet Signal and the Numbers Procedure to facilitate the classroom discussion.
Step 3: A= Analyze: Analyze and then discuss what you were thinking and feeling at the time? The mentee was thinking that the lesson went very well and she/he was pleased with how she facilitated the classroom discussion. The mentor agreed that the lesson went well, but was also thinking that the lesson would have been better if the mentor has remembered to use the Quiet Signal and the Numbers Procedure.
Discuss what you thought others were thinking and feeling when the event had occurred. Both the mentee and the mentor thought that the students in the class enjoyed the lively and informative classroom discussion.
Step 4: G= Generalize:
Generalize and then discuss what did this event or experience tell you about yourself as a person?
The mentee and the mentor realize the mentee has much to learn about diverse ways of facilitating a classroom discussion.
Discuss what did this event or experience tell you about yourself and others who are affected by the classroom discussion.
The mentee realized I need to learn more classroom discussion management tools like the Quiet Signal, the Numbers Procedure and other instructional methods like Think-Pair-Share, and Discussion Ball to become a more seasoned classroom teacher. The mentor appreciates how the mentee wants to incorporate new classroom discussion management techniques in her/his repertoire.
Discuss what did this event tell you about how to lead a life of meaning, purpose and fulfillment?
The mentee acknowledges that teaching is far more complex than she had originally thought and the mentor was thinking that perhaps he/she was asking too much of his mentee at this early stage in her teaching career.
