I have 50 year old screen doors similar to this. The bottom has long louvers that go across the full expanse instead of the divider. I have recently began my project of reworking so I can rescreen. I have one down, taken apart, sanded and ready for re-straining and accent paint.

I own the company that made that door. My grandfather started the company in 1936. Today our manufacturing building covers 4 acres, so we have grown since the start. The name of my company is Paul Argoe Screens, Inc. located in the small town of North, South Carolina. We just acquired another door company called The Combination Door Company. We are impressed with your work. thank you.

They are good doors and I have rescreened many of them over the years. There is somthing about the slambing of a wooden screen door that brings back good memories of days gone by.

We have old wood framed screen panels that fit in sections of our breezeway, including the two doors. One door panel got ripped. After removing the trim pieces I saw there were no nails or staples underneath holding the screen in. Instead the edge of the screen is pressed into a groove and because the screen is metal (ours is actually copper I believe) the friction seemed to hold it in, and also probably added some tension to the screen. I couldn’t tell on the video, but I wonder if the one you worked on was similar.

I have worked on doors like the one you are explaining but the one I showed was just flat. Some with the grove use a spline to hold the screen tight and then cover it with the wood trim to hide it.

Would you paint the door before replacing the new mesh screen
@DougLearn4 ай бұрын
I would paint it while I have it torn apart so I could paint all surfaces under the screen. You will probably have to do a bit of touch up over the nails when you get the screen back in.

I have a similar door that I rescreened but my toddlers are wild and keep ripping it. Is the metal screen better for these doors than the fiberglass? The fiberglass screen stretches and rips along the staples. Thanks.

The metal screen does not rip as easily but it does crease easier so it can look bad. I have added wire cloth in front of the screen on some rentals so the tenants do not tear it up as fast and does not pull out because the wire cloth is much stronger. Maybe that would help with yours.
