I always thought part of the point of this movie was to show that being understood is something only happens in fleeting moments. Sometimes when traveling alone, we're allowed to be somebody else with the people we meet, and sometimes we're allowed to be who we truly are, and say things we'd never say in our 'real' lives. Under those conditions of absolute honesty, then intimacy can be built in a very short time.
@LLyrification4 жыл бұрын
i disagree... Your truth changes depending on perspective; meaning that what the other person thinks as valuble and true is different to yours. You are not just losing some meaning on the language barrier but also on the actual meaning of the words and actions themselves, for you value different things as an individual compared to others. That is why people with the same interest and hobbies often times become more intimate. Sadly due to the level of difference in their commitment to their values and worldview it could potentially cause them to fall apart. Or optimistically grow closer to each other.

swantonist I’ve shared this with someone once... I wish it wasn’t a far off distant memory now, one that comes back to me all too often, paining me, the pings of what I should have tried harder to keep, what I should have tried to evolve, what I failed to say out loud... the painful reminder of the brevity of things in life, the short term we share connections... my ultimate failure to seize something - something wholly unique and something I will never get another chance to... or maybe something that still will occur, it’s been a while since I last talked to them though, and it doesn’t seem like they are willing to anymore. In the end though, what I really truly learned from this experience is that: it doesn’t matter, it’s not the end of the world, and it’s not important what’s going to happen, only that it did. There are plenty more beautiful wonderful things and people to experience, and they will come along in time, I have no doubt, so for now I must enjoy this time in my life, this time where I feel desolate and alone, because I also feel free and Unbinded to anyone or anything, I belong solely to myself... and that is a thing which is just as fleeting and valuable.

this movie still haunts me. I remember seeing this so many years ago. It breaks your heart without even trying. No heavy drama, no overly acted scenes. it's the small things in this movie that are so powerful. We know these guys aren't going to end up together but somehow that is not important. Like this analysis says its the temporary aspect of their time together. These are the kind of characters that exist in real life. I guarantee this situation has happened between two people many times. I think it ultimately reminds me of the the temporality of all things. This kind of person if you ever met you would never forget about... you would think about finding them again but probably ultimately wouldn't try to.... when Scarlett's character says that line "Let's never come back here again b/c it won't be as fun" I think she is literally speaking about life itself in that to live once is what makes life vital and exciting...not to "do it over again someday" This movie is a low key masterpiece.

What I found interesting is how they chose Japan as the setting. Just like the cherry blossoms, one of the defining features of Japan, the relationship between the two leads are ephemeral and beautiful, with the transient nature of the relationship only serving to highlight its beauty, just like how cherry blossoms also flower and die in a short season. I think that another way of reading the movie is that everything in life is seasonal, as is the characters' indecision and stuckness in life (winter) but this then gives way to rejuvenation and growth (spring) upon meeting each other. Each season cannot last forever, but in the short window of their blooming time, they create something beautiful and worthy in their relationship.

I also found the way their different kinds of frustration and loneliness were portrayed interesting. To me it felt like he was always surrounded by too many people, it was too loud, too hysterical, too much. His loneliness came from being among too many people that he didn't connect with at all (see all the commercial scenes). With her it felt the other way around. She was lonely because there was no one there. Her husband went off to work or turned his attention away from her, the person on the phone didn't care. The scenes with the biggest contrast were the pool scenes to me. When he was in there, they had the aqua sports stuff, it was loud and busy. When she was in there, it was night and quiet and she just dove into the silence. They both come from completely different situations, stages in life and from different kinds of loneliness but the feeling and understanding is mutual. This movie always hits home with me because I met a female friend whilst traveling in Europe who became a very special friend to me and shared a very strong bond with. Similar circumstances.. we both were in relationships… both of us were American in a foreign land, didn’t really speak the language well.. though we connected so strongly on an emotional plane . It was just that calm peaceful feeling that even without words exchanged, felt like we were so comfortable and comforted by each others company. It’s been 20+ years since our adventures together in Europe.. but I still think about her to this day. Not even a feeling of longing to be with her.. or to see her again, though it would be nice. But more of a feeling of gratitude that I met and was able to spend time with someone who taught me a lot about myself and my perspective on things in life. I think because of the things I learned from her.. I came out a better person and someone who is more at peace with himself and the way I view the world and treat others.

Something has to be said about, being at an age where the experience of a spontaneous falling-in-love encounter and connection, will probably never happen again. I know the feeling. I’ve been through such similar moments. They’re so bittersweet. Idk why people say there is a lot of sexual tension… in the moments, you’re not in that mood at all. Beautiful insights and interpretation. So true how 'doomed' romances can be necessary pieces of the puzzle in our emotional / psychological lives. Not everything has to consolidate into a formal relationship or end in 'together forever' to have been deeply transformational and a vital part of our emotional experiences. It has taken me a long time to recognize how important it is to give yourself to the moment and the intimacy of the connection, even if you know it cannot be sustained. There are many inner processes and emotions that can be mobilized and unlocked in allowing such a vulnerability. And it is also a way to honor life in the present moment, knowing such moments can never come back, regardless of the outcome.

In some way this movie captures the romantic side of traveling. Being on the road, quite often you have the same kind of conversation with the same kind of character all over again but every now and then you meet someone that just gets you. That doesn't mean your're super special or anything like that, it's just about a certain chemistry that can't be faked. It doesn't have to be romantic by the way, could be completely platonic. It's great to see this dynamic portrayed so authentically.

I knew the movie before, but through that experience, it is even more relevant to me. Captures the feeling perfectly. You did an excellent job at explaining this!

This movie is an incredible exploration of the human experience with love. Two strangers bond over the loneliness they share in a beautiful city. Ultimately, it is sad when the have to "wake up" from the dream they share together and go their separate way.

This movie just reminds me the time when I was in Italy and have a relationship like that. I used to be sad about this doomed ending but now I feel comforted again, watching your video. It was a lovely film message. Love can unexpectly come to us in many forms and ways, and after all, it doesn't matter where it ends, but how I have enjoyed and appreciated it.

So many romance films fall flat because they focus on what the couple wants. It's centered around passionate gestures and incindiary, impulse-driven spurs of the moment. A radio above the head, a passionate kiss in the rain, and storming into a wedding at the last moment to stop the bride-to-be from marrying the wrong man. But Lost in Translation doesn't focus on what each other wants: it focuses on what each other *needs.* And what our two characters need, above all else, is companionship. It's absolutely a love story, and you might even be able to walk away with the impression that it's a "romance," but I think the relationship of our two characters defies such a simple categorization. They're not "in love" with one another so much for what they can provide sexually, or as a means of pleasure to one another; rather, their love is thoroughly grounded in finding the beauty of another's soul. It's the warmth of finding a kindred spirit in a cold sea of strangers. Bob and Charlotte are lighthouses for one another. Forever one of my favorite films and an exemplary depiction of love in its most serene, pure, and spiritual form.

This movie is in my top movies of all time (probably no. 1) and everything I thought about it is what you convey in this video. I'm glad someone else understands the movie the way I do. Kudos! It also resonates with me hugely as this is similar to how my wife and I met. We knew of each other prior but met randomly during Sonisphere festival in the UK. We didn't know either of us were going and the very first day, early afternoon we bumped into each other at the bar (a festival with roughly 100,000 people and dozens of bars). We spent the whole festival together and just hit it off; we had the absolute best time but couldn't take it further as we were both in unhappy relationships and at different times in our lives. 4 years later we reconnected on Tinder. I had not long broken up with the relationship I was in during the festival and i came across my wife about 2 minutes into my first session on the app, swiped right and we went on our first date a few days later. We are now happily married with 2 children. That festival was my Lost in Translation...

This film is something special. Seen it many many times. There's something really addicting and comforting about the melancholic atmosphere of the film. There's something very relatable about two lost souls meeting each other, connecting, and liking each other without the need to end up together. I didn't really love any of Sofia Coppola's other films, but she really hit it out of the park with this one. It's definitely one of my top 3 favorite romantic movies, along with Before Sunrise and Blue Is the Warmest Color.

From 0:00-0:48 is probably the most crucial part about or as to why meeting people who you've never seen or met before is sooooooo refreshing that you let your guard down a tad bit. Malcolm Gladwell touched on this in Talking With/To Strangers. But when you meet a woman that you seemingly vibe with & contrary to popular belief you can tell she vibes with you. There is that in which Screened points out in the first minute of this video. You not only know it,you feel it & hate that the moment will end. It happens probably at least once every 5 to 10 years if you're single if you're married (*I couldn't tell ya) But you sense that you could be with that person as in possible kindred spirits

The dubbed Spanish Latin version of the movie, when Bob whispers clearly you can hear: "quiero que sepas que jamás voy a olvidarme de todo esto, ¿de acuerdo?... Nunca te olvidare"... That translates to: "I want you to know that I will never forget all of this, ok?... I will never forget you". Obviously this was incorrect based on the digitally processed original audio that says: "I have to be leaving... But, I won't let that come between us, ok?" That's Bill Murray saying it, not Bob, because that line was never on the script, so in my opinion the spanish version line sounds more realistic according to the character. I just can't imagine Bob in the future chasing Charlotte and cheating his wife. To me this was more like a 'never see you again goodbye' than a 'see you in the future goodbye'. A really accepted doomed romance from Bob.
@Screened4 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting bit of information 👍
@M_SS14 жыл бұрын
I understand the meaning of both versions as exactly the same message. Bob has no way of contacting her once they say goodbye, so to me, saying "I will never forget you" and "I won't let that come between us", mean the same thing, ie, she's always going to be in his heart, no matter what, and nothing, nobody, and no physical distance can take that away from them.

Don't deconstruct this moment, don't probe, don't explore... just savor the mystery and relish how exquisitely transcendent this moment is. It is one of the greatest emotional climaxes in cinema history. Out of an astonishing depth of respect & compassion for the characters and their sad, rich relationship, Sofia actually gives them their PRIVACY for these their final words together. When I first saw this I was astonished, literally speechless, not only at the level of respect & compassion (for FICTIONAL characters!) but also how Sofia understands that NOT knowing what Bob whispered makes the film a hundred times richer than dialogue could convey, for - as Einstein said - "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious". Brilliantly prepped, and brilliantly conveyed, a transcendence like this is rarely achieved in ANY medium... and thus is truly Art.

I didn't realise that for Spike Jonze's film "Her" and for Sophia Coppola's film "Lost in Translation", the main actress in both films is Scarlett Johanson. If Jonze and Coppola both got inspiration from their failed relationship for these films, it is a nice touch to know that ScarJo is portraying it both. As if she too is part of it.

This video makes me cry so much. I know exactly what this is ... I recently found a note I wrote to myself on December 14th 2014 explaining how sad I was and didn’t want to be here anymore and kill myself and start another life... at the end I wrote “I just need a bright new soul to come into my life” as fate would have it a week later someone came into my life that changed the course of it forever ♾ we were so wrapped up in each others love instantly..he saved me from the place I was at and showed me what it was like to truly live and be free. It didn’t last because of outer circumstances...We still keep in touch but he’s away at the moment. I will always love him for what he did for me. So if you ever read this Connor I love you more than you will ever know and thank you.

A doomed romance comes at times when we are open and vulnerable, when we don't know what to expect from a situation. That makes it clearer to realize what we need and want from a new person. Somehow it is easier to find connection when you don't have to attach expectations of a future together, so you just enjoy the moment to its fullest.

There are two movie/series quotes I apply to this situation, "it's not dying we fear, is not doing our best when alive". And the other is "killing you was the point, surviving is just a luxury". We are not guaranteed true love or true happiness. It's up to you to take your shot, even if the results are momentary. Can't have love in is purest from without heartbreak in it's truest form. They share the same coin. Time is the enemy to all.

As an anime fan it really felt more like a melancholic slice of life adaptation than anything hollywood. It was more intimate, worked with memorable dialogues, pleasing visuals and beautifully picked soundtracks (the night scene with my bloody valentine playing was chefs kiss). Absolutely a film ill remember for the rest of my life. a fine work of art.

I had a very similar short relationship once with someone I worked with.Our ages were about the same difference but we connected almost exactly as Bob and Charlotte do. It was intimate but not sexual. We were both on a working world tour (she a personal assistant to the artist and me the lighting director) so we were always experiencing a different foreign city together. We knew it would all end soon therefore we knew our "relationship' was doomed. It was love I'm certain in fact possibly the deepest love I have ever experienced. This was 4 years ago and I still love her but I keep it to myself (except writing it on here just now). That movie makes me tear up constantly. Its perfectly done. Bravo Sophia.

The point is simple... this so-called "doomed romance" juet makes you feel alive for this one small moment in your life. Then, of course, you go back to real life. And you continue to contemplate what could have been, but it never will. Just the mere thought of this is sweeter than reality itself.

I showed this movie to my boyfriend when we first started dating and he loved it. We still watch it regularly and I realized he was really moved by it. We have a similar age difference to the couple here and while we were both single when we met and started dating, he was convinced the age difference and his having kids and an ex had us doomed. I sometimes see him getting teary when they go their separate ways, and now I know he felt as strongly as he did because he was worried that would happen to us. It's a great story that makes you feel both conflicted and completely empathetic. It is messy just like real life.
