For the longest time, I thought the Footloose parody episode where young Fire Nation students weren't aloud to dance was just filler, but rewatching the episode where Aang and Zuko met the last 2 dragons and danced with them made me realized that by suppressing dance also meant the Fire Nation was unintentionally suppressing a key aspect of fire bending.

I mean, that's a pretty cool connection I guess. But this show really only has 1 MAYBE 2 filler episodes. The episode you're talking about I never really saw as filler because it was giving us an idea as to what it was like in the Fire nation. What was the culture of the nation now compared to 100 years ago? Many episodes in avatar that may not seem to focus on anything specific about the main characters really just ends up showing you or building up a part of the world for you to better understand it.

We def know Uncle Iroh's background. He was one of the greatest generals of the fire nation but underneath was also a decent man. He evolved his fire bending from the dancing dragons AND protected them by lying about killing the last ones. His son died in battle. He loved his son and when he died it killed his desire to fight the war. He was part of the white lotus organization. He is known to explore the spirit world which I'm assuming was after his son die to see his spirit. He had a deep respect for the bending style of all the elements. He was innovative with his abilities. He couldnt create lightning but he learned to redirect it.
