Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has finally arrived, and is already the source of much debate. After a massive opening weekend, odds are you’ve seen the film, but did you catch everything in it?
In Tarantino tradition, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is stuffed to the gills with cameos, references, and allusions to other films and celebrities. Even more than other Tarantino movies, Hollywood history is baked into the story, it can be very easy to miss something.
Don’t despair! Your pals at ScreenRant have you covered with a detailed look at the stuff you may have missed.
Including:
An actor dedicated to capturing the essence of Charles Manson. The unusual opening credit that hints at the thematic intentions of the film. A Tarantino favourite who makes a memorable cameo. A playful insult with some fascinating real life history. A quick cameo by a 60’s icon. The background to Bruce Lee’s most memorable scene. Another Tarantino stalwart with an awesome walk-on. The key to one of the movie’s very best scenes. A prominent prop with a purpose. The tragic true-life story behind Cliff’s marriage. An actor with a cool couple of parents. Some history behind the film’s scenes in Italy. Pitch perfect stunt casting in the movie’s western sequences. The final film of an accomplished actor. A music cue which foreshadows a later plot development. A Hollywood icon who died before his scenes could be completed. Some connections between other films in the Tarantino-verse.
All these and many more in the full video!

In the scene when the narrator is listing Ricks westerns in Italy, one movie was directed by Antonio Margarehti, this was a fake name used when the Basterds pretended to be Italians in Inglorious Basterds.

I’m with you. This is the only Tarantino movie I’ve seen, because violent content isn’t my thing. But there was such a rave reaction to the period production design that I was highly intrigued. So I watched…with great delight!! The production was exemplary. And the ending was so freakishly satisfying! An alternate universe where evil was thwarted. Loved it! The violence was like a Warner Bros. cartoon but with blood , so it became outrageously entertaining. Acting was brilliant. There was a slow unfolding in the storytelling which I appreciated. Cultural references were fun. Just a dazzling example of smart filmmaking!!!

Here’s one you missed: when rick is reading his book on the lancer set next to the little girl, he talks about easy breezy falling and injuring his hip, which gave him a limp but he survived. Gotto go with Elliot here; Rick fetched his flamer is response to being shot at, and had a look of shock and disbelief on his face. Cliff on the other hand.. LSD is definitely a handicap in a fight. It takes someone who already has quite the knack for violence to do what Cliff did under those circumstances as LSD would prevent any adrenaline-fueled responses.

Spiral Feather Cliff was a war hero and a stunt man. I’m pretty sure he is supposed to be a badass. Rick refers to him as Audie Murphy, a little bitty guy who single-handedly held off an entire company of German soldiers while recovering from a bout of Malaria. He suffered from PTSD later in life. Maybe it was the PTSD Rick was referring to, but also his capabilities.

In real life a stuntman (believe his name was Cliff) was lured to the Spohn Ranch for sex, was forced to sign over his expensive cars, then slaughtered and buried there. James Stacy was very much an ascending actor (who in the film rides off on his motorcycle) that had a horrendous motorcycle accident, losing an arm and leg, destroying his career. I was amazed in the brief scene of Manson at the house, the actor actually walked exactly like Charlie did, I was a San Francisco Hippy in the 60's and that one summer Charlie was all over S.F., we tried to avoid him, but that scene in the film brought me right back to seeing him walking past years ago. Also did a flashback, a family member had a 1966 Coupe deVille , a tan color, they left in NorCal with a mechanical glitch, in '67, they asked me to drive it to them in Van Nuy's, where Cliff lived in the film, they let me use it all over L.A.the month I was there, Quentin Tarantino nailed the vibe there, there are probably way more subtleties, I worked on films awhile, then other life got in the way. Brought back memories though.

@@anabriones2175 That's not improvisation, it was an accident that Leo just rolled with and Tarantino decided to keep. I don't know if anyone has ever done this before? And he cast the two biggest actors in Hollywood to star in same movie. I don't know how he budgeted that? Anyway LDC and Pitt, 47 and 58 years old, once upon a time were the biggest stars in Hollywood. Genius.

Tarantino gets people to work for less money than they otherwise command because they want to work with Tarantino. He got the idea from Bruce Willis, who wanted a role in Pulp Fiction. Tarantino said he couldn't afford him, Willis said they could come to an understanding if he wants to do it. I'm guessing some may get a percent, but most just take less, like Willis, just wanting to do this particular role.

They were all drunk and fighting. No way Natalie would mess with that boat in the dark, choppy waters. She would have called the captain, if it was bothering her. I don't doubt she had an affair with Walken at some point - but I think the reason she was killed was because she walked in on them, having sex. Both guys alluded to being bi in their lives.

Number 26. Clu Gulager, from "The Tall Man" and "The Virginian", among many others. He played the book store owner. 91 years old! Probably the oldest cast member.👍👏

I think the last 30 minutes of this film is some of the best stuff I've ever seen and I'm old and I watch a lot of movies. I thought Pitt was excellent and I have never, ever been a huge fan of his. I can honestly say my husband and I love this movie and we see it as not just a love letter to Hollywood, it's a love letter to Sharon Tate and it's the way that night should have ended. Keep on making great films Mr. Tarentino and we will keep watching.

Pitt, DiCaprio, and Robbie all do amazing work, but they are all very accomplished actors. We'd expect no less. So, for me, Julia Butters gives the standout performance. She is only on screen for a few minutes, but she has two very pivotal scenes and does very remarkable work, especially considering she is only 9 years old.

You missed the connection between Cliff and Eazy Breezy. Both were near the end of their primes which came to an end when Eazy fell off a horse and injured his hip while Cliff was stabbed in the hip in his encounter with the Manson family.

I was waiting for that as well. I only remember him from The Virginian. I wouldn’t have recognised him now he’s old, but I saw his name when I googled the cast. I’m going to have to see OUATIH again so I can pick up on all these connections! I had no idea who the Manson girls were played by, not even Dakota Fanning. She looked so different. It’s such a great film, my favourite of Tarantino’s so far.

Clu (who I know best as Bert the cemetary owner in Return of the Living Dead) is and has been a regular patron of Hollywood grindhouse theater New Beverley Cinema that QT owns now. He is a great guy and always friendly whenever I have met him there. That is definitely where Q knows him from.

I personally smiled when I saw Timothy Olyphant in this movie going back to the role of Mickey he played in Scream 2 where Randy, played by Jamie Kennedy, referred to Mickey as "the freaky Tarantino film student". Now all these years later the guy that played that freaky tarantino film student is in a Tarantino film.
