Squid Game: 15 Things You Missed

Korean media is the gift that just keeps on giving with this battle royale style, gritty satire absolutely dominating on the platform right now, with it being in the top 10 most popular shows on the streaming service in over 22 countries. The series which is a jet black and violent portrayal of humanity is full of twists and turns, brilliant foreboding, easter eggs, hidden details and subtle references that it’s worth giving the show a full rewatch. However, until then we thought it would be best to take a look at the listed items in great detail, putting the show up to the magnifying glass, and finding the secrets hidden in plain sight.
In this video then, we will take a look at 15 things from the show that you may not have noticed on the first time of asking. We will look at all of the foreshadowing in regards to the identity of the game’s true architect (and how the evidence was in front of our eyes the whole time), the subtle imagery that spells out the entire story painted on the wall of the player’s dormitory for all to see, the subtle foreboding of key character’s deaths and how they will die, the visual cues that you may not have initially noticed, the inspiration for both the show and the costume and set design, some familiar faces you may not have noticed and some goofs the show makes just for good measure. There was a foreshadow for player 456 as well. When he returned, he was tied up and player 67 was with him. He swore on his mother's life for player 67 to untie him then broke it. When he won the games, he returned to his mother having passed away.

Something I don’t think everyone knows, is that scene when Sang Woo is in the bathtub, he is trying to commit suicide by burning the charcoal briquette on the stove (a common method of suicide in Korea) leading to carbon monoxide poisoning. So in terms of foreshadowing, he tried to commit suicide then and died by killing himself during the squid game.

There’s several clues throughout the show that hint 001 is 456’s father. -When 456 refuses to drink regular milk, 001 says his son hated milk too. -On October 24, 001 says his son’s birthday is coming soon. 456 birthday is Oct 31. -During the marble game 001 says he lived in a similar neighborhood, 456 says so did he. -The door of the house where 001 gets “killed” at is the same as 456’s mother’s house.

You forgot one of the most clever hints at Oh Il-Nam being the creator. When the police officer is flipping through the most recent list of players in Squid Game (2020), the first page he opens to is Player 2 because there isn’t a file on Player 1/Oh Il-Nam.

I feel like Ali Abdul was the perfect representation south asians needed. I'm so used to us being portrayed as the comedic relief in tv shows (the desperate one or the nerdy lame one), so this was so refreshing to see a real relatable person that isn’t just an exaggerated stereotype. I'm sure a lot of desi people felt really attached to him too. His kindness, naivety and work ethic reminded me of my dad and I really felt so close to his character. I sobbed for an hour when he died

Regardless of how inexplicably obvious it was that the old man knew too much, his lines and acting and overall performance really just made his character seem like a nutty old man. Normally, it would be easier to pick up, but him being so content with his mortality, and the sweet ignorance really made me unsuspecting of him. Marbles scene really made tear up. It was so heartfelt, the emotion was so driven and you really feel for these characters.

Fun fact: Brazil is the only country in the world where the show is actually called Round 6. The reason for that is that squid translates do Lula in Portuguese, which is the name of Brazil's former president and, soon to be, a candidate in the 2022 elections. Netflix most likely wanted to avoid getting too political...I mean, can you imagine the memes?!?

Mi-nyeo's method of killing Deok-su is also kind of foreshadowed, after the tug of war she relishes in how "powerful" she felt when leaning back. This is how she managed to grab Deok-su and pull him off the edge of the glass bridge with her - by leaning back and grabbing him.

I think one of the main themes of the show is the fact that there is no winner of Squid Game. If you won the game, you'd either be so traumatized you would not be happy to have won the game (like Gi-Hun is) or you would be deluded into sociopathy in order to deal with what had happened in the game (like the Front Man is, a former winner. He's so sociopathic he decided to become the Front Man of the game and even killed his brother to protect it). This is an allegory for the monetary economy and capitalism. Not only is there no winner and the game is simply entertainment for the elite, but the players are constantly told the fantasy that the winner will have a better life and that the game is "fair." They even kill and hang people who cheated at the game from the ceiling to clearly demonstrate how "fair" the game is. This is a gaslight. Squid Game is not a game at all, it's just a genocide, just abuse. To call it a fair game gives the players the illusion that they have control. They have none. And the only way that the games can function is for the players to willingly participate. I'm proud of the players who realized the truth and voted "X" and the ones who didn't return.

This makes perfect sense because the scene where the soldiers turned off the lights and the contestants were killing each other, the lights only came on and the soldiers came in after 001 said "he was scared" which could have been a code to break up the fighting.

I have a strong feeling that player 001 is the unknown father of the protagonist! I felt that when 001 told the protagonist "I'm sure that your father used to beat you for not drinking milk when you were a kid" then the protagonist replied "yes, how did you know that?!". Add to that, both player 001 and the protagonist agreed that they used to live in a very similar neighborhood during the marble game.

I really love that Pakistani character, I felt so bad for him. (Edit) Y'all we are talking about the character he played, a Pakistani named Ali who is kind ,nice and innocent who gets taken advantage of his innocence in his workplace and at the game and ends up dieing. Well the game shows the cruel side of humanity towards pure innocent people. We know he's a Indian In reality who played the Pakistani character. It's not a stereotype character Ali is shown as a individual pure innocent human not a representative of Pakistan. Squid game is not just a series about thrilled games if you look deeper about everyone's character you can find different types of humanity. Ali- pure innocent Old man- who believes money drives humanity North Korean- a victim of human cruelty who lost faith in humanity. Deok su- A gangster ends up falling in his own deeds. Jun ho - Who ends up getting betrayed by his brother. Ji yeong- victim of abuse. Sang woo- A gifted student who has too much expectations from others ends up stealing money.A fear of responsibility. 456- A normal life which stands between love, money, betrayel, kindness, power, self esteem. He shows choice is always in our hands we become what we choose. Actually there is not even one good person in the game not even 456 he realised it only at the end but it was too late , everyone were selfish and didn't think about the people who died cuz the money they got its actually lives they actually killed. That's why at the start they clearly explain the game only after the first level and gave them choice to choose what is right.

Another small detail that I’ve not seen posted anywhere online: In episode 2 when Jun-Ho enters In-Ho’s abandoned apartment, we can see the apartment is small and modeled exactly like the rooms the masked workers sleep in on the island - from desk location, to the bed. This shows that In-Ho more than likely became a worker after winning the games in 2015 and wanted to stay in an apartment modeled after their rooms on the island. He probably then worked his way up to become the Front Man. I also believe he is the first and only Front Man.

Everyone’s talking about episode 6 but what choked me up was the final game. After everything sang woo did, the people he killed to get closer to the prize. Gi-hun still couldn’t complete the game and take the money. Begging sang woo to agree with him to end it so they would both live. He would rather be penniless and save his childhood friend. Things only became more emotional when sang woo did a noble thing and took his only life so gi-hun could win anyway and get the money. Squid game is an absolute masterpiece.

@@klassikmaster10 plus if they were to put more attention onto the background of the brother then the audience would have suspected the brother has a more important role to the story besides being the brother of a detective..it kinda would’ve been a HUGE indicator that the brother is more important to the story than we are led to believe (more than it already was indicated)..it would’ve added more to how their bond was but it wouldn’t have been a shock/twist if they went with what you’re saying

In episode 1, when the main character takes the money from his mom, he goes to bet on horses to pay off his debt. This was foreshadowing the fact that they were the horses which the VIP's were betting on in the game. The contestants are even numbered instead of named the exact same way the horses are.

I had a feeling the old man wasn't actually a player, and it was confirmed for me when 2 things happened, 1. We don't see him die, any character you don't see die or laying somewhere dead is probably alive, but beyond that 2. The police dude looks through all the files of the players when searching for his brother, and who just so happens to not have an entry? 001, The old man himself, the book starts at 002. I was more or less convinced he was behind... something lol. I still cried like a baby though.

Also a few more I noticed. 1. When the Game Master took off his bunny rabbit head mask, you can see that the hands were of an old man... 2. In Ep5 when the alarm sounded and woke up all the contestants, they all look confused, but then they panned to the Old Man and he looked visibly terrified! He knew if there was a problem on the outside, then he won't be safe on the inside!

New hint I noticed ! At the end of almost each game they show the time left and pause on that, it shows 00:01, Il-Nam’s number being 001!
