Chip was the real estate agent that sold the houses. Making money there, which is ok. Got paid for each show. Great they earned it. But, Chip did not do all the work himself, he had his crew did it, with him checking in time to time. Viewers thought the furnishings came with the house, it doesn't. Programs like this is part of the reason the price of homes have sky rocketed. Check back, 10 to 15 years, you will see the home decorating and refurbishing programs have added gusto to real estate prices. Perhaps even longer back, Trading Spaces etc.

They did actually say in the show repeatedly that the furnishings and decorations were there to show off the house and available to buy if the homeowners wanted to keep them. They would routinely come back later to check on the owners to see how they were doing, and would show the furnishings the owners put in the house. Not really a big sticking point, if you watch the show on a regular basis. Also, they never pretended Chip was doing all the work himself. He would be routinely featured working a specific project within the build, but Chip and Joanna routinely name the foremen that are doing the actual work. Again, it is just a matter of watching the show with some kind of regularity and seeing multiple episodes. And the real reason why home prices have skyrocketed is a mix of economic disruption (recovery from the 2008 implosion), population migration (blue to red, metro to suburban/urban), inflation (big part of it), and slowed building (related to inflation, interest rates, and capital availability). This is driving the price of existing homes up because of demand/supply. I know in my area, two homes on my street (suburb north of Dallas, TX) sold last year for $575k and $650k, and both were built in 1979. We're walking distance to a park and elementary school. These houses probably cost $65k - $80k new in 1979. People came in, flip renovated them, and sold them for $200k+ more than they bought them for less than a year prior to the sale. They were probably $400k - $500k just 2 years ago. Both bought by young families. I agree the popularity of reno shows like these has impacted the market, but what I've seen in the data (I'm in supply chain) is that the biggest beneficiaries of that trending have been Home Depot and Lowes. I think we're just really starting to see the buyer market impact, but the economy is slow right now so it hasn't really blown up yet. Covid maximized the influence of these kinds of shows as people stuck at home started DYI projects to improve their homes. Furniture/finishings sales (especially online) exploded during that 2020/2021 window. Shed sales exploded. Oddly, landscaping stone sales blew up too. I think we're now seeing those homes really hit the market, at inflated prices because of the improvements made in the past 4 years, at a time where interest rates have risen and the cost of capital is higher.

I live in Waco. Some homes on Fixer Upper were resold at inflated prices but over all the show hasn’t affected the cost of less famous homes here. The previous comment explains very well the myriad of forces driving up prices.

I know thatTX has more lenient codes than many other states. But the fact that a carpenter ( Chip) was doing plumbing and electrical always made me very uncomfortable.

Mine could too. but as a Professional Engineer, who taught code classes, he would never do it any place else. It is against code ( in the state we lived in) and if anything happened, the insurance company would not pay out. When the property was to be sold, the bank should not take the loan ( that is why no one tells them) if a house is worked on by someone not licensed and it would not be underwritten

Don't see why you were uncomfortable that Chip did all, have a friend that is license for plumbing and electrical, he is not a carpenter by profession but is very good at what he does, so good that he is another Chip.

Absolute clickbait!!!! This is nothing but an advertisement! The reality is MANY of the homeowners on this show have sued HGTV, the production company, general contractors, and crew because of shoddy unfinished work. CHIP does very little actual construction.... only when the camera is rolling! The entire premise is heavily produced and scripted!!

Just shows how greedy everyone actually is!! It’s exactly why I stopped watching their fake show!! It’s all staged, none of it is for real people to live in. It’s all about making money, by either selling the house (for way more than it’s worth) or taking away a family home and making it an Airbnb. So no I will never support this couple again.
