I met and interviewed David Carradine around 1973 or 4. He came to Gastonia, NC’s Diane 29 Drive In Theater to promote his biker film “You and Me.” I was a dj for WGNC radio. The theater owner brought him, David’s daughter Calista, and couple of Hollywood guys by the radio station one cold rainy March night. I had been playing on the radio the 45 rpm recording of “You and Me” the title song. I was really impressed by David. He had a definite free spirit persona. We had a nice piano in the studio where we did the interview. David felt at ease sitting down at it. He started playing and singing Willie Nelson’s song “It’s Not Supposed to Be That Way.” I knew the song and sang part of it David singing with me. I can still see David looking at me, smiling as the song ended. In the interview I asked him his favorite composers. He said, “George Gershwin, Ludwig Von Beethoven, and….Willie Nelson. I saved him for last.” Good interview. Went to the theater and saw the film. Took a photo of us with a Polaroid camera but it didn’t turn out. David was a very talented man. As the interview concluded I asked him to give advice. He said, “If there’s something in life you cherish, pay attention to it before you throw it away ‘cause it’s hard as all hell to get it back.” A very special night.
