Thread: A continuous helical ridge that runs along the length of a solid or hollow bar with a circular cross-section Minor diameter: The diameter of an imaginary cylinder that bounds the root of an external thread or the crest of an internal thread Pitch diameter: The average of the major and minor diameters External thread: Also known as male threads, these are found on the outside of a screw or bolt Internal thread: Also known as female threads, these are on the inner surface of a hollow cylinder, such as a nut or cap Thread angle: The angle between the thread flanks Axis of thread (pitch line): The imaginary line that runs longitudinally through the center of the screw Fundamental triangle: The imaginary triangle that is formed when the flanks are extended until they meet each other to form a vertex or apex Pitch: The distance from a point on a screw thread to a corresponding point on the next thread measured parallel to the axis Major diameter: The largest diameter of the thread of the screw or nut Root: The deepest part of the grove that corresponds with the minor diameter Flank angle: The angle made by the intersection of the two thread flanks Crest: The top part of the grove that corresponds with the major diameter

What is the main purpose/use of pitch diameter? It doesn’t seem nearly as important or useful as the major or minor diameter.

Pitch diameter is used to determine whether two threaded parts of screw threads could be successfully mated together.
