I admire Scriabin, but his music always gave me the impression that it was improvised on the spot. Maybe because my feeble mind can't see the grand scheme!

It's true that a lot of his compositions sound improvisatory but they sound like great improvisations, to me at least, so I don't feel that it is a drawback.

May I recommend a few miniatures? My absolute favourite are the op. 45 played in its entirety, each piece is very short but so telling in its own way. The first one is just gorgeous. Then the op 16 no 3 is also on my top as well as op 11 no 13 and 15. They may not be exactly 1 minute long but they still occupy not more than 2 pages of music. It’s incredible how much he was able to say in a short span. Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestions. They are all great little pieces. But I don't see any Op. 45 - did you mean Op. 48 preludes?

@@JonathanGeffnerPianist no problems! Op. 45 is a set of three poems “Trois Morceux” (three pieces): Feuillet d’album, poem fantasique and prelude! Here’s a go to recording by the great Stanislav Neuhaus kzbin.info/www/bejne/i526nZarbM6Hb7Msi=hxQQ-YTwes2qwCE9 :)

The D minor Op. 11- I used to look at the music for this, which I inherited from my teacher, and wonder how all the rhythms fitted together.

Lovely playing! Out of those I would have to pick the Op. 37 No. 2. It just so perfectly encapsulates the style of Scriabin's middle period with its lush harmonies. But I think my absolute favourite would probably be Feuillet d'Album Op. 45 No. 1 which is a very charming and almost jazzy little piece.

Yes, there are many Scriabin pieces that have jazz-influenced chords and melody lines, and Op. 37 No. 2 is very notable for that. Funny that you mention it because last year when I was shopping for a piano I was in a piano store and played this piece on a piano I was trying out - a salesman said to me, "You're a great jazz pianist!" I'm not sure he believed me when I replied, "That's not jazz; it's Scriabin." I need to check out Op. 45 No.1; thanks for the suggestion.
