A residency Director cant just do that because well.. he is the only person with this rank so he would still be responsible for everything and had to answer to any question the Residents asked him.

Dr Cox has never been one to show his vulnerabilities and compassion for his colleagues, it wouldn’t make much sense for it to suddenly just happen now. JD finally tricks him at the end and it shows how far they’ve come from the beginning that they are good friends no matter what “Coxie” tries to throw up as barriers to avoid the truth.

Nah Cox would have had no reason to instantly address a serious topic such as parental responsibility. JD had been putting his son first, he just wanted to be closer to him. Cox's reaction is perfectly fitting, nothing but pure giddiness, perhaps to hide actual disappointment, but that's just how Dr. Cox is. All he wants the world to know about his relationship with JD is that he does not care about him one bit and that he merely finds him annoying.

Ah yes, the moment that came out of nowhere because what was supposed to be a full season that was likely to get another got shortened to 19 episodes with three episodes to spare to spontaneously wrap up a nearly decade long series. As good as the finale was, there's no denying that they were all making the best out of a terrible situation.

@@headlikeahole9235 There was a writers strike in 2007 that flat out crippled a lot of shows. It's the same reason season 7 is so much shorter than the other seasons. I'm guessing that when season 8 began production, the team thought all was well, only to find out when writing this episode that was not the case. Honestly, it's surprising that so much of the show's team stayed together for season 8 in general. Plenty of long-running shows were gutted during that time, often forced to find a way to redefine themselves or face cancellation, which explains season 9.

Season 9 had nothing to do with it at all, it happened way after strike and it has to do everything with producers' greed who didn't allow Bill Lawrence credit season 9 as a spin-off it actually is. Season 8 also did not suffer from strike - except some episodes airing out of order, and I'm not sure if it has to do with strike or just productions issues. Otherwise, they proceeded with/finished season 8 just the way they wanted. Please don't conflate everything into one pile.

I was trying to show this show to my girlfriend and a couple episodes went by and she said honey i dont really like it so i tried to look for a specific emotional episode and she still didnt like it and when i was looking for another to show her i realized almost no episode sticks out for being super hilarious or anything like that but it was a moment in time that we associate with while we rewatch these.. we grew with the characters and their friendships with eachother grew. this show is one of a kind and im so happy i experienced it and im REALLY happy that sarah chalke is beth on my new modern favorite show rick and morty lol between roseanne scrubs and rick and morty she just knows how to pick winners huh
