We start with building the basic structure for a humanoid head. I tried to come up with a way for beginners to be able to get the proportions correct. And hey: did you know I wrote a fantasy novel?

I got into sculpting because I paid a lot of money for something I realized with time, and patience, I could learn to do it myself! I have seen TONS of tutorials, and yours is by furthest, the most detailed, and best one out there. Especially for people as myself who is just learning. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us! I look forward to watching your other videos.

I'm a minute into this video-- the FIRST sculpting video I've watched since I decided I wanted to learn it. All of your artwork in the back is mindblowing: dark and twisted in its beauty, exquisite in detail, perfect in execution. It's exactly the kind of art I'm hoping to make when I can get much better at this. Subscribed. Notifications on. You will be the reason I succeed at this.

Josh, I've been using Sculpy...since the early 80's... and I am still learning. Your videos help that continue to happen and my skills to evolve. The other sculptors in college (BACK IN THE DAY!) used to call it bubblesculpt cause they said it was like trying to sculpt in bubblegum!

Hello Josh. I myself have made a few figurines in Super Sculpey, Milliput, and other material, still a beginner though. Thanks to your videos, your charisma that not anyone has to make a video (!), the tips you give, the way you exlain every detail, are simply answers to how to do it, how to correct my (many) beginner's mistakes, and simply how to do it good ! You've got it all, thank you for sharing your time and know-how with us.

You may already know this, but if you have an old food processor, you can run it through and it will grind it up kind of like rice and it warms it up a little, then you can roll it together and condition it. Makes it a lot easier to work with. I enjoyed your video!

Thanks for the inspiration. Never sculpted a thing in my life before, though I did a bit of Warhammer kit bashing back in the day. Just got into building scale gliders and went looking for a half decent pilot bust to put into a 1/4 scale glider. After searching the net and finding nothing but cheap plastic crap, I got inspired to why not sculpt my own. So after watching your sculpt 101 series I had a crack. It’s been an awesome experience and learning so much on my first project which is still a work in progress. I discovered skills and a hobby I never would of thought I could do!
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 3 жыл бұрын
That's really cool! Great to hear. Do the gliders you're making actually glide? And if so would the pilot need to be light weight? If so, you might want to look into Free Form Air that I show in this video. It's a different process, though a lot of the techniques are similar. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5W6en6PipeKlac

@@JoshForeman Yes the gliders are detailed scale Radio Controlled gliders with wingspans upto 4-5+ meters. Weight can be an issue but generally at this scale to achieve a centre of gravity some weight is needed. I hope to cast the finished model in resin but set mould up so the cast is partially hollow to save some weight. Will check out your link,. Not sure now to share my progress photos with you here Cheers Alex 👍🏻

I’ve been gifted an air-dry clay starter kit. Never done any art ( I’m a retired science teacher in U.K.) Tried other KZbin tutorials on sculpting but, Josh, yours is by far the best I’ve come across, by miles. I had done two previous attempts at “ human heads” and TBH they looked really, really bad, as you would expect. I have followed your tutorials and the difference is incredible and I’m really chuffed with the result. There is, obviously, a long way to go as I improve my technique, I Struggled with the mouth and lips, but I can only get better! Thanks again. You are an inspirational teacher with these vids. Thanks for your endeavours in producing them. (PS “ chuffed “ is Yorkshire for “really pleased”. Do you accept donations in Pound Sterling?

Sculpey III if fragile when baked. Mainly for small things like beads. Sculpey III can be mixed 1 to 1 with premo translucent and makes a reasonable strong clay for bigger and thinner things. I use this mix of premo translucent and Sculpey III because there are so many colours and its easier to make a colour match later, need be.

May I suggest that you create a firm handle - like a wood dowel or similar - and drill a tight fitting hole to deeply insert your armature wire into. It's way easier to hold onto a handle to sculpt a head than to worry about leaving dents.

hey Josh, just fount your channel today. I really enjoyed your videos, the way you interact with the camera and all the explanations ... you really put a lot of work in this!! I would really just make a sugestion to you, as an artist your hands and tendons are really important, so maybe invest on a plastic roller or a cheap pasta machine to make the conditioning of your clay easier, faster and in bigger quantities. I work with polymer clay too for many years, mostly in jewelry and techniques but I have done some sculpting too (not up to your standards ofcourse) but because I do have this issue with my hands it is something you may have to consider for the long run. cheers!

23:00 One point about language: in Australian and British English a butter knife is literally that a knife for spreading butter. Thin, flexible, without serrations and not very sharp. We call might call what you are using a dinner knife or table knife. But not very often, so I'm not actually sure what it is properly called, because usually it's just a "knife" in the context of the dinner table and everything else becomes a carving knife, steak knife, cheese knife butter knife, etc. I've noticed Australian English has a lot of this kind of thing. For instance we typically don't say "doing the laundry"and "doing the dishes" we say noun "washing" (British "the wash"?) for the laundry and noun or verb "washing up" for dishes. And if we say "washing up" it is puzzling to us that someone might mistake that for doing the laundry, and vice versa for "the washing" or "the wash" in context, meaning to us unambiguously the laundry; that is doing thereof or the thing being cleaned, as opposed to the room you do it in.

Americans call dirty clothes "laundry" so we are in fact doing (cleaning) the laundry (clothes).
