The backside of Anacapa is a marine preserve and there is no fishing or spearfishing allowed. You tend to get more fish there, but the swells are also worse so the vis can suffer depending on the time of year. I believe this was on the land-side and therefore may be fewer fish...but it still feels very alive to me when I dive there regardless of location.

@@eteamvideos The protected areas are on the north (coastal facing) side of Anacapa. There is a big diff between the protected areas and the unprotected. Mostly purple urchins and bare rock in the latter. Rich, more abundant habitat in the protected areas. Ironically, the more barren unprotected habitat offers more ops to view inverts due to lack of kelp cover and has its own special, austere beauty. Still I favor the protected zones for their higher species diversity.
