A ship sinks, 20 survivors are in the water. Daddy shark and his son, baby shark come by. Daddy shark says " follow my lead son, we'll swim around them a few times just showing our fin on the water" Baby shark says " why do we do that daddy?, why not just eat them straight away?" Daddy shark says " they taste better when you scare the shit out of them first"

A guy that used to own our local dive store told me once that he had several students getting their OW certification say they be very scared if they ever saw a shark. He went on to say that these students would be the same ones that when they saw a shark on a dive would be the first ones trying to swim after them to get a better look 😂

That sounds true. What they say on the surface is gone at the first sight of a wonder shark going by. A

The number one question I get when people find out I scuba dive is “aren’t you afraid of sharks?!” My response is “heck no! I swim towards them!” People also often ask me if I find pirate treasure 🤷‍♂️.

Hey Alec, love your content! Agreed, sharks are definitely a non-issue on rec dives. Spearfishing certainly ups your chances of a... less peaceful encounter. I've had my fair share of close calls. The shark never wants to attack people, it always wants the fish! There are lots of interesting techniques spearfishers use to reduce their risk, like moving spots if you have an encounter, using float bags, ect. It might make a good video for your series, I know I would be interested to see another perspective! Like my method is to tie my fish bag/ring on the end of my spear on the ascent so if there was a sudden bite it would be a bit further away from my important bits. But I've definitely gotten caught off guard before I've been able to do that, unable to untangle the fish bag off my chest due to all the hanging gear we pile on. In that case I feel like being a bit aggressive, swimming at the shark and poking it usually spooks it away. I usually try and shake the shark before the ascent, you just feel so vulnerable from so many sides. There is a terrifying, but fun psychological element to it.

Loved this topic. I've told similar stories and similar statistics for the past 25 years but people refuse to believe what I'm telling them. Galapagos, Cocos, and Socorro Islands are my favorite places to dive and I'm going for the sharks and non-divers can't believe I won't be in a cage and won't be afraid. I've come to hate Shark Week on Discovery because they sensationalize shark behavior as 100% dangerous because that's what gets them the views but it reinforces the fear people have.

When you enter the ocean, you enter a food food chain. And not necessarily on the top. Sharks is the Apex predator. As long you understand that and use common sense , you'll be fine. Snapping turtles in Muskoka worries me a lot more than any shark. Those ones are mean MF's 😂😂

Snapping turtles are more dangerous than sharks. People get mixed up by the media. We are invading their space. What would people say if a shark came up to their door? Looks like I got folks stirred up on this subject. A

IDK. I can watch shark attack videos non stop on YT so it must happen more than you are saying. I was told by a spear fisherman that you are more likely to get attacked if you are on the surface. Still just one of the things that keeps me out of the ocean.
