Last time, my first Skull sculpting was a 2" clay sculpture of a Skull that I held in my hand all the time I worked on it. The clay stayed soft due to the warmth of my hands and it was hard to work on and add details.
With this second Skull sculpture, I'm using PVC pipes as Armature that is mounted on a wooden base and I'm making it a bit larger this time.

I decided to start sculpting years and years ago when I realized I couldn't afford all of the beautiful monster model kits I loved lol. To this day it amazes me how hard it is to sculpt a good skull. They're far more complex than you realize when just looking at one. This one is a beauty!

I had the same problem with air dry clay, it had the tendency to crack when it dried. I now use oil based clay that stays soft and will not dry. If you have to use air dry clay, make sure it is not too thin and also dry it slowly.

Thank you for your comments! First this sculpture was made from an oil based clay that is not fired at all and it stays soft for ever. You are right about filling as much of the sculpture with some sort of filler, like Aluminum Foil. I had no idea people have used heat gun to harden the polymer clay. I like the idea very much. As for PVC pipes in the sculpture if it was made with polymer clay, I don't see why not being able to use heat gun, PVC can stand the low heat well.

@pretabiscuit De nada. Feliz Ano-novo.

I've heard of people using a heat gun to fry the outside of their sculptures as they sculpt with polymer clay. No need to put them in the oven if you go that route.. But considering that there is PVC in polymer clay I imagine if you baked a sculpture with the pvc pipe in them wouldn't do much as the temp to harden the polymer clay is only 220 F I think. But he used a lot of clay in this vid. I think bulking it out with foil would save some clay. Just a thought.

This sculpture was made from an oil based clay that stays soft and is not fired or baked. I don't make mould out of the sculpture. I just keep them as they are. Some times I may use Elmer;s Glue to protect the surface from accidental rub-off.

@DJ4C0B I think the clay I used on that sculpture was called Chavant Plastiline Modeling Clay. I prefer a firmer clay than that one. something like Roma Plasilina #2 or even firmer. I used Elmer's Glue on the sculpture. It gives it a slight protection, but the sculpture is still soft and should be handled with care. Making a mold and replicating with plastic is better of course.
