Which SD Card should you buy? UHS-I or UHS-II? SanDisk, Lexar, or Transcend? What do C10, U3 and V90 mean?
In this showdown, we decode SD Card specifications, speed test the cards with BlackMagic Disk Speed Test, and see how they perform in a Panasonic G9 camera.

The Sandisk Extreme Pro 170MB/s (UHS-I) is actually capable of achieving write speeds of 170 MB/s. However, there is a specific card reader you should use to unlock its potential: SDDR-C531-GNANN On Sandisk’s their web page, disclosure number 6, the following is stated: Up to 170 MB/s read speeds, engineered with proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s, require compatible devices capable of reaching such speeds. Source: shop.westerndigital.com/en-ie/products/memory-cards/sandisk-extreme-pro-uhs-i-sd#SDSDXXY-064G-GN4IN It is very confusing that the slower USH-I card reader (SDDR-C531-GNANN) outperforms the newer/faster USH-II card reader (SDDR-409-G46) in combination with the 170 mb/s cards. It seems that the USH-II cardreader does not has this ''proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s and thus is not able to use the maximum writing speed of the 170 mb/s cards.

Having confusing overlapping industry standards for things that look exactly the same, should be punishable by law. Another similar example to SD card speed ratings is the whole USB-C rabbit hole.

I had bad experience with Ultra series. Highly recommend not using any "speed test program" to do comparison, but to actually use a high quality card reader on a PC and write/move large amount of files to the SD card and see real world write speed changes over time. Yes, Extreme series is reliable in high speed writing.

Hi, you did a really good job here. But if you do testing on photo bursts, it really comes down to access time and iops of the memory for different SD Cards. a good comparison with Benchmarks can been seen on "Chip-SD-Karten-Bestenliste". I bought the cards of company "Kioxia" as they have a much higher tested iops rating, and thats the key for higher burst rates. My old eos with SD adapter and my newer lumix as well as my old Canon SX 230 do a MUCH better Job by using kioxia cards. Try it, it really worked for me. In the end it all comes down to the peak of your SD-Card controller in the camera, and in your PC. Sequential writing is only useful if you are filming, it´s equal with testing SSD-Cards on computer. Great work and thanks for testing.

I have many of the same cards and it seems that either your card reader or computer are the bottleneck. Each that I have tested have performed much better on a Kingston UHS-II card reader. That same Lexar silver for me is 165,106 and the transend is 180,160

I just got a like new used Sony NEX7 for $300 with the Kit lens & I wanted to know what brand name & GB size SD card that I should buy for it? Cause I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 & I got the camera so I can vlog on KZbin

I mainly use SanDisk Extreme Pro - never had one fail, and we have loads of them! A V30 rated card will do the job perfectly. amzn.to/40vH9Ak The Nex-7 has a top bitrate of 28Mbps, so each hour of footage would be about 12.6GB. A V30 card guarantees sustained writes of 30MB/sec, which equates to 240Mbps - more than enough for your combo.

@@ConstantGeekery ok thanks I seen the 64GB card that you had directed me to my question is do you think it would be better to just get the 128GB card that is $22.99? I just figured that for a few dollars more I could have the extra space. I’m new at this so I wanted to ask if I should get the 128 or two 64 GB cards?
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery Жыл бұрын
@@HowYouMove depends how you work. 64GB is a lot for HD footage at 28Mbps. Having two cards means you always have a backup. My cameras all have two slots, so I have two cards for backup… but I normally only use the first card as I tend to copy the footage off to my computer and organise it straight away.

7:14 “but still, nowhere near 170MBytes a second, so, I don’t know what you’ve got to do to get that kind of speed, out of the card” Well, there are two options: For full size SD cards: only the Sandisk SDDR C531 UHS 1 card reader will have the technology to get the 170 speed for read, and the write will stay the same. For MicroSD cards of the same type, there is the MicroSd version of this called the SDDR B531, which is the Sandisk MobileMate. Or, if you use both types of sizes then you can slip the extreme pro microsd into a Sandisk UHS 1 full sd card adapter, and then slip it into the same SDDR C531 card reader I listed above. This also applies to the following cards: (will apply for BOTH SD and MICROSD of these categories) Sandisk Ultra / Ultra PLUS (120 ~ 130MB/s read) Sandisk Extreme / Extreme PLUS (150 ~ 160 MB/s read)

Helpful but I couldn't tell if you were using an external card reader or not. That's honestly where you would see most of the difference. My old Sony Vio reads the "Extreme Pro 64GB 95MB/s" at 10mbs-20mbs but if I do it through a 3.0 USB card reader it reads at about 84mb-88mb. The same card reader on my professional work PC reads at about 91mb-94mb even though my work pc is 4 times more powerful so I guess I've reached the cards max potential. So now I'm on the hunt for faster cards/readers. You can have the most expensive card with the fastest speeds but if the reader is slow then your not really getting the most out the card. Came here from your other video on card readers. ;) If you could do a video with a "faster external" card reader that would be awesome.

Thanks for your comment and insights. These were all tested on a SanDisk UHS-II USB-C external reader, which is the only UHS-II reader I have. I certainly will do more testing if I can access other readers. Thanks for the views - much appreciated.

ISNT' THAT THE SAME AS READ SPEED??
@theskyspire
@theskyspire 3 жыл бұрын
@@khandam7709 No, the camera's transfer speed can be slower than the rated SD card speed.
@Cognizance4
@Cognizance4 2 жыл бұрын
@@khandam7709 if you read big files (1 GB or more) it´s the same, but if you read (or write) lot of files in small or medium size between 2 and 20 mb, your camera or sd-controller has to access the sd-cards memory more often, and that is where most cards slow down a lot. Higher iops and faster access time of memory will do the trick even on slower cameras.
