In 1972 I was 7 years old and flew for the first time from my home in Southern California (anyone remember Western Airlines and North Central?!) to visit my Aunt Doris & Uncle Mike who lived at N 39th Avenue West. Every time I would hear a train notching up the throttle to start the assault on the hill my then 50 year old aunt would run with me up to the tracks. At 4:14 of this video my heart leapt at the memory! I believe it was high hood SD9 locos back then - always paired back-to-back. Yellow cabooses would cut off just before Collinwood and coast down behind their own train. The entire line was double track, heavy jointed rail. And all of the ore docks were open and buzzing with activity. And don’t forget the DW&P was still hopping with transfer jobs to its yard in West Duluth. A rail fan for life was created those weeks!

Blueish to white exhaust smoke indicates the amount of unburnt diesel fuel. As soon as these large engines reach their normal temperatures the visible smoke will be less or completely gone, if the engine functions normally that is. However, carbon will still be present, smoke or no visible smoke. White smoke can also indicate other possible causes, such as engine oil that is entering the cilinders (different smell!) but this is not the place to dive into that.

Those back 2 engines are actually running. You can see their exhaust from the drone if watching closely. They are a different tier rating for emissions
29 күн бұрын
the old engines have worn rings . these are 2 cycle engines so they don't have the same style of engines like the 4 cycle units from GE. they are burning a little oil at idle , but once they get hot , things expand and seal up.
@stevelacker3589 күн бұрын
More likely the early smoke that clears later isa mild example of “wet stacking.” Oil and unburned diesel coats the inside of the exhaust trunking during extended idling and low power running, especially in cold climates. Then when the power is brought up, more and more of the exhaust system comes up to temperatures that cook off the accumulated oil and unburned diesel sludge, hence the white color of the smoke. Once the deposits cook off, you can see smoke clarity of the actual engine exhaust, which is pretty clear for their age but still shows some oil consumption (which aggravates the wet-stacking. ) Wet stacking is more of an issue on shipboard diesels where the exhaust has to go up several decks, and is much longer and takes longer to cook off all the way to the outlets.
