I wish these engines didn't have the problems that took them out of service. They are awesome sounding hairy chested beasts with that deep primal thrum. Most unforgettable locomotive sound I ever heard.

Kitty Z28 As far as I know, there are only about 130 of these engines left in exiatance, I have seen six in my life so far. I know that UP still has 8 of these engines on there roster, the only ones that actually worked.
@mixxer88805 жыл бұрын
AmericanRailfan 2005 Union Pacific had 60 or 61 of these locomotives with the 6,000hp 265 "H" engine. The other convertibles or as UP called them SD90MAC with the 710 4,300hp engine, UP owned at least 300 units, some are stil on UP's roster. Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific were the only railroads who owned the 6,000hp engine version of this locomotive.

@@mixxer8880 Are those locos still around? Hoping that someone would buy an SD90 MAC-H2, take it apart, sort out its numerous issues, apply long term solutions to those problems, re-assemble it, run it through the tracks anywhere to tweak its bugs and use it as experimental platform.

@@neilcomiso3079 Unfortunately because of reliability issues on the SD90 as EMD named them, but on the Union Pacific, they were SD90MAC-H because of the 6,000hp "H" engine, Union Pacific retired them as well as their General Electric counterpart, the AC6000CW. I guess running that much 🐎 horsepower on the rails was tough. During the mid 90s, EMD and GE were in fierce competition to see who would be the first to bring a 6,000hp single engine locomotive to the U.S. rail industry. I think both failed because EMD and GE rushed to get these locomotives off the manufacturing floor instead of doing proper in-depth lengthy research and development to keep these high 🐎 horsepowered locomotives on the rails. General Electric's 6000hp locomotive, AC6000CW was a complete failure. It had a prime mover, engine in it not designed by GE, but by a German engine company that GE contracted with to produce a 6000hp engine. EMD on the other hand designed and manufactured their 6000hp "H" engine. EMDs first four stroke locomotive engine. The "H" engine didn't sound like an EMD locomotive engine that everyone recognizes, that distinct sound of an EMD locomotive. I saw the UP SD90MAC-H locos in action in the Los Angeles area leading on intermodal trains in their heyday. Union Pacific has large operations in So.California. UPs SD90MAC-H locomotives were a sight to see! I mean just looking at a single engine 6000hp locomotive doing the work of two or two and a half locomotives was awesome to see on UP intermodal trains. UP would place three SD90MAC-Hs on their hot shot container trains. That's a whopping 18,000hp, whew!!!! These locomotives were often compared to UPs other famed high horsepower locomotive, the EMD DDA40X. UP numbered of these locomotives, # 6900 thru 6936. A matter of fact, UP still has #6936 operating in their historical heritage locomotive fleet. DDA40X locomotive has two 3000hp engines on one frame. A twin engine locomotive and UP was the only railroad who purchased this locomotive from EMD. These locomotives have a storied history on the rails on the Union Pacific. Top speed of 98mph, on a freight locomotive! These locomotives could move a train. UP used the DDA40X locomotives on their 🔥 hot piggyback trailer trains and other hot trains.

@@mixxer8880 Union Pacific didn't retire the AC6000CW's.The units were rebuilt as C44ACM's with the tier four 7FDL-16's or "GEVO-16". CSX retired their CW60AC's that were derated into CW44-6's,the horsepower was adjusted to 4,400/4,600 HP instead of entirely rebuilding the units.Union Pacific owned 60 SD90MAC H2's and most were returned and became EMDX units.Some units were rebuilt and exported to BHP Biliton.The SD90MAC H1's were all scrapped.The SD9043MAC's were kept in usage until alot of them ended up with cracked frames.Norfolk Southern rebuilt 110 into SD70ACU's right before selling 65 to PRLX.Canadian Pacific owns 61 SD9043MAC's and only did 30 SD70ACU rebuilds but acquired 39 SD9043MAC's from Union Pacific.They also owned 4 SD90MAC H2's that were immediately scraped shortly after.

Funny reading all the thoughts on the 90 H locomotives. Here it is 2018 and all the 90 phase 1 are scrapped. Many problems surfaced early and where patched on the run. The 265H was a bomb with severe engine vibration and crankshaft and blocks cracking. The cabs and frame wiring were a constant problem and the engine as whole did not ride well. There really was no redeeming factor to save the 90H. As I write this comment NS has acquired these engines (Phase 2) and are are stripping them down to the frame and rebuilding them with new cabs and electrical systems and engines ( I believe CAT 2 strokes) . I also believe they will be doing something with trucks to eliminate the tracking problems. They must have gotten these things cheap or a swap. Also the SD80MAC's will then go through a complete rebuild.
@Cnw87016 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the NS SD70ACU units rebuilt from the ex-UP, CIT, and INRD SD9043MAC's? Those units were rated at 4,300hp and were built with HTCR-II radial trucks (with Siemens traction motors) and equipped with EMD 16-710G3C engines. They were initially built as a tie-over for the MAC-H until the 6,000hp 16-265H was fully developed. EMD was never quite fully prepared to take on the challenge of winning the horsepower race. GE came close with the AC6000CW, but the recession killed everything, and Tier 4 regulations have further diminshed the probability of having high-horsepower diesels from ever returning on Class 1 rails.

Alot of information has already been mentioned. Norfolk Southern purchased 110 SD9043MAC's from Union Pacific that were dirt cheap.Most of the convertibles developed cracked frames over time.The units were rebuilt as the SD70ACU's but then 65 were sold to PRLX and finally are getting scraped including other SD9043MAC's still in storage.A handful of the rebuilds did involve CEFX SD9043MAC's.Norfolk Southern sold all 29 SD80MAC's to PRLX and half if not most were scraped because of high mileage and alot of problems.6 SD80MAC's were acquired by Canadian Pacific to only be used as parts donors for the rebuild program.Canadian Pacific owned 61 SD9043MAC's but only did 30 SD70ACU rebuilds.They also currently have 39 SD9043MAC's in usage that came from Union Pacific.Ironically they also had been leasing/borrowing SD9043MAC's at a time just like Norfolk Southern was doing.Going years back,the SD90MAC H1's from Union Pacific were scraped.There was 60 SD90MAC H2's and alot of the units became apart of EMDX/EMLX that weren't scraped.Certain amounts were actually rebuilt and sent to Australia as exports.Canadian Pacific had 4 SD90MAC H2's but those were scraped too soon.The 265H's became the 1010J's under Caterpillar for the SD70AH-T4's and were based on the 12-265H that the SD89MX prototype used. Major differences are fuel injection and redesigned crankshafts. Ironically,the units were another epic failure.Norfolk Southern,BNSF,and KCS all canceled their orders.KCS had been leasing the demonstrators in the CAT/PRLX paint scheme.Union Pacific officially ordered 90 SD70AH-T4's and 10 ST70AH-T4's for CSX.All of the units with Union Pacific at first immediately went into storage because of numerous malfunctions.Recently CSX finally got rid of them and now they're apart of the leasing fleet.All of the PRLX SD70AH-T4's went to Mexico on leases to Ferromex and one or two have been involved in a derailment.Despite the cracked motor blocks,broken motor mounts,and destroyed crankshafts EMD heavily rebuilt the 265H's and also revealed the 210H's.Both series actually got prolonged usage in Asia,China,and India.

As of recently, no. They were downgraded to 4,300 hp when they were sent east to Juanita Shops in Altoona, PA. with a V16-710G3B-T3 (or a V16-710G3C-T3) inside the engine room.

@thomasmcquown45074 ай бұрын
The year before retirement I ran these on the B&P .compared to what we ran they were really nice. . Our first time having air conditioning . he only bad thing about them when you had wheel slip they jumped into the air. GE engines were better with less slip and more sure footed. I am glad that I got too run them
@seabulls6915 жыл бұрын
That's because it's EMD's four stroke H motor. It makes 6300 horsepower.
