What's the bomber that the Fireball taxies past at 7:07? Judging from the cockpit and nose, its a Martin, but I didn't know Martin manufactured 4-engine bombers.

Consolidated B-32 Dominator

I heard in another video on this that the Fireball could outrun all of it's prop driven contemporaries...but then they stated that it's top speed was about 428 MPH? I thought there were some prop jobs by this era that were WAY faster than that. Like the Sea Fury? And the last model Spitfires?

Supes Me >>> The Fireball was kind of a experiment at the time . Everyone wanted a pure jet at the time but , they were unsuited for carrier use . ADM John MCain ( senior ) wanted something quickly. Of course the Sea Fury, Bearcat , ect , were superior ( until later Jets improved ) which is why the Fireball was short lived . Still ,,,, a extremely interesting aircraft . Wished there was a flying example today !

is Fireball really a name you want to give to an airplane?

Perhaps the F 104 would make more sense.

Rick Aday Major difference between a PBY4-1 and 2. 1 was essentially a Navy Leberator, 2 was a single stabilizer, dual upper turret Privateer, that the Navy used as a low level strafer instead of a bomber in the Pacific.

Combining the worst of the new with the mistakes of the past. Definitely a technology transition aircraft.

Looks more like a trainer, than a fighter.

the good old days, no eye or hearing protection for ground personnel loose clothing and lots of potential FOD in your pockets and I suspect the test pilot probably had a couple of shots of whiskey to steady his nerves before he got in the cockpit

McDonnell Aircraft already had a prototype Phantom Navy jet in the works when the Ryan came out for testing. The Phantom would have flown much sooner if Westinghouse wasn't late with the 19XB engines. The Navy liked the Phantom a lot and so the Ryan was cancelled.
