SDCC 2010 Haunted Mansion Reboot Teaser Trailer - Guillermo Del Toro

The Teaser Trailer shown at San Diego Comic Con for the New Haunted Mansion Reboot Produced and Co-Written by Guillermo del Toro. This film will be based on the Hatbox Ghost! Del Toro announced that he was a big fan of the Famous Disneyland Attraction and its a Dream come true to working on this project. He also announce that this would not be a comedy cough Eddie Murphy *cough*. He said it will be "scary but also fun". It will be live action and in 3D. Weather this will be shot in 3D or converted later on we dont know yet. But this is still pretty exciting news for any Haunted Mansion Fan.

According to IMDB, there is a new Disneys Haunted Mansion in the works that Del Toro is one of three writes for. I'm on the fence though because it reportedly has Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson and Danny DeVito as the top billing.

Two things I hope from this: that it can recreate the feeling of mystery and ambiguity of the ride and that it'll actually be really creepy (I never found Haunted Mansion ride too happy or comedic). @TherealRNO There was never an "Emily" who had a tragic tale. The attic bride wasn't given a name or story until 2006...as the homicidal Constance Hatchaway. Also, the Ghost Host is 100% not Master Gracey.

Krista Fischer The storyline of the attraction is vague, not really precise, because the imagineers wanted people to imagine themselves their story. It’s normal if the story of the original film is different from the attraction, the screenwriters imagined their story.

Right on! I'm actually really excited for this. Guillermo Del Toro is a fantastic director. Who better to be chosen to remake The Haunted Mansion than Guillermo Del Toro? And the best part is that he'll actually make it creepy and scary but fun. That's what the last movie lacked. It wasn't scary enough. It was too comical. I have really high hopes for this movie. I'm not expecting it to be too scary though since it is Disney. But I'm expecting it to be a really entertaining movie.

@Skoople88: Well, to be fair, Connie as a beheading back widow WOULD fit right in with Hatty "losing his head" over her, as it were. But, that's personally because I feel Emily's tragic tale fits more along the lines of Master Gracey's hanged suicide, as opposed to the directly open murderous behavior of Constance. Either way, I just hope the movie, if all goes well, does the ride better justice than that 2003 comedy drivel.

this will be rated PG-13 but if it's rated R it's kinda loosing the point because the Haunted Mansion is filled with dark humor and Disney will never accept an R Rated film so this is why i think this is still delayed because Del toro wants a hardcore dark film which is fine but i still think they can make a much better film than the 2003 one without having to receive an R rating.

No. No you don’t. It’ll be run into the ground. A chilling, haunting, stand alone film is all this attraction needs. Pirates of the Caribbean had a premise that allowed them to go anywhere, do many things, introduce countless characters, and still allow it to feel fresh each time. The Haunted Mansion doesn’t have that. It’s set in a singular location. Trying to make it a large scale franchise like POTC would be damn near impossible. Allowing it to be a single horror film is the best case scenario. Because the further we explore the mansion, the less scary it becomes.

My personal idea for a Haunted Mansion movie would be a found-footage film in the style of Grave Encounters, where a crew from a Ghost Hunters-style TV series travels to the supposedly haunted Ravenswood Estate somewhere in the southern US. As the crew investigates the house, they learn of the story of the mansion--how back in the mid-1800s it was a plantation owned by a wealthy noble, Henry Ravenswood (Gary Oldman). The noble had a daughter, Melanie (Emma Watson), who fell in love with a common man of the neighboring town. The noble was somewhat of a bigot to the lower classes, and refused to let his daughter marry one of the common folk. So, the two lovers hatched a plan to run off and marry without Henry's consent. When Henry found out about this, he became enraged, and vowed to use whatever means necessary to keep his daughter with him forever. He soon began to delve into the occult and the study of dark magic, which led him to seek out the aid of an infamous traveling gypsy, Madame Leota (Sara Kestelman). Henry needed someone with a powerful enough grasp on the spiritual arts to cast a devastating curse on the estate that would turn it into a prison for the souls of anyone who would dare enter it. However, to perform this curse, Leota needed a soul to bind to the estate to keep it contained, meaning that Henry would have to sacrifice his life to make it work. In his growing insanity, Henry agreed to give his soul to keep his daughter prisoner, and thus his soul was transformed into a terrifying spectre, a Phantom that would forever terrorize the grounds of the estate. With his newfound power, as god of his domain, the Phantom Henry struck down his own daughter and her groom just as they were about to leave, trapping their souls within the mansion, forever under his sway. His dark deed completed, the Phantom turned on Madame Leota and trapped her spirit in the mansion as well, but not before she managed to send a message to another ethereal adept within the town... An old hatter named Ezekiel Halloway (Robert Englund), who people believed mad due to his claims of a connection with the spirit realm, heard Leota's warning about what was going on at the Ravenswood Estate and went there to stop it. He was never heard from again, though some residents of the town still claim to see him wandering the grounds of the estate at night, carrying a single hatbox... He became known as the Hatbox Ghost... For the next 150+ years, stories of disappearances around the Ravenswood Estate have run rampant through the surrounding towns... To date, 999 people have disappeared, including Melanie Ravenswood and her groom, Madame Leota, and Ezekiel Halloway... 999 ghosts... but there's room for a thousand!!! Eventually, the crew encounters the Phantom and tries to stop him once and for all, but one of them gets killed, giving the house its 1000th ghost... just what they all needed! Suddenly, all of the mansion's ghosts turn on the Phantom and break free of his control, creating a whirlwind to suck him down! Madame Leota appears and explains that she "neglected" to mention one last detail about the curse--if the Phantom claimed 1000 souls, they would break free of his control and drag him down into Hell to suffer an eternity of utterly unspeakable torment for his crimes. And they do just that! The Phantom is pulled into the whirlwind, down into Hell, freeing the mansion and the spirits trapped inside it from his control forever so that they may finally rest in peace...

Cody Gearheart Maybe once after Jungle Cruise is released and hopefully it becomes successful enough that Disney will revive this project. I know at first it was very rocky with almost everything being a miss but they need to give films based off attractions a second chance. Only successful one was Pirates Of The Caribbean and they stretched it for too long causing a massive fatigue with the franchise. Maybe it doesn’t even have to be a film released in theaters, they can do a sort of anthology series of films on their Disney+ service where they release films based on several attractions every year or two. I don’t know if any of this is likely though and I’m sure Disney will probably just play it safe with their countless remakes and Marvel movies releasing three times a year.

Guys. It’s still happening. Del Toro is no longer directing, but he’s still involved as co-writer and producer. Plus, we officially got a cast for this reboot. We got the names of Tiffany Haddish, Lakeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, and Rosario Dawson. So yeah, a reboot of The Haunted Mansion is officially still happening.

@WumWip Actually, thats when Disney announced it. But they never did say it was supposed to come out summer of 2012. On a recent interview with Del Toro, he said that he recently sent in another draft of the screenplay. Hopefully the screenplay will be finalized soon. Then they can start production.

@Mansionology: The lapel pins released for the Mansion's recent anniversary, stories from Imagineers who designed the Mansion (including Kat's father [Kat is Connie's VA, who actually recorded one of the stories for the Beating Heart Bride--given the name of Emily by fans--entitled Nuptial Doom]), & the 2003 film disagree. Also, the ONLY person Connie could be wed to in-canon is The Hatbox Ghost, who is set to return, because of Connie being a Black Widow, & NOT the Beating Heart of old.

This would have been of at least of similar caliber to Pirates of the Caribbean… dark but touched by humor, full of fun but followed by serious adult themes, and best of all… it wouldn’t have made one big joke out of itself. Sadly we’re past the days where Disney would release mega blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean… the new Haunted Mansion movie they’re moving forward with (starring Owen Wilson and Danny Devito…) seems like it’s going to suffer from what all their movies have been suffering from these last 7 years: a severe lack of substance. Like 99% of their recent releases, it’ll be chalk full of ridiculous slapstick comedy and flashing colors for the kids. And this is coming from an avid (classic) Disney fanboy. I’ve always wanted (my favorite attraction) Haunted Mansion to get the love and respect it deserves like Pirates… sadly I don’t think it’ll ever get it.

Sounds Awesome. I hope people are not going to expect a R-rated horror film, I doubt it. Don't get me wrong a R-rated disney horror film would be amazing. But thats an oxymoron. As long as they keep some of the scenes from the ride in I will enjoy it. I only hope they do not make 500 squeals like they did with pirates. Leave it at one and make it count.
