Cassie A you're right! they both really fit Naito's voice, aldo like sakura from the first game, both voices fit! also I just want to throw this out their, did you know that danganronpa: the animation, and in Danganronpa: Trigger happy havoc, in the english voice, the voice actor is the same for both, but it's weird, how Makoto's dub for the animation is more annoying and unsteady, even though they share the same voice actor. same with the Japanese (eng sub) version.

Japanese Komaeda has this low bedroom voice when he's challenging Hinata. Soft, but deceptively, dangerous and his lines - and their delivery cuts you like knife. The voice actress also went out of her way todifferentiate him from Naegi. Komaeda sounds a lot like how she voice acted Kurama in his crazier moments.

I like both of Komaeda's voices...to an extent. His Japanese voice sounds smoother and fits well with his manipulative and clever personality, but his English voice is the one that properly shows the intensity and complexity of his personality, whether being cheerful and humble, while simultaneously being cruel and condescending, or switching from one dynamic to another in the span of a single sentence. I would die of happiness if he had his Japanese voice with the intensity and emotion of his English one.

I think it's because a character has to be interpreted differently depending on the language he's dubbed, for example japanese language is much more inclined to be respectful and not direct, it could justify how his voice is smoother

what i think is the opposite. a BIG trait of nagito's character is being able to say absurd things, lie, and discuss with the most calm and serene of voices. haijme even says more than once it's impossible to tell whether komaeda is saying the truth or not, and i believe his voice not having that many emocional nuances adds a lot to that, being able to talk shit with your usual tone is the best ability of a liar, manipulative and smart person. the only moments we truly see a change in his voice are when he talks about hope and despair, which again, i think adds a lot for us to understant his true nature and view of things. in a gameplay sense, him being more dramatic and expressive would add to the experience and adrenaline of parts like "WILL YOU BATTLE AGAINST ME?" but in my opnion his serene sound scares me more, makes me uneasy and suspicious, just like hajime and the cast felt around him! so i believe the japanese va did a overall better job especially representing nagito. props to the english one tho, it has its strengths

Mintalotta I really agree about them sounding quite a bit different. I personally do not like the English VA's portrayal of Komaeda myself, but I also am biased for having witnessed the Japanese ones first / gotten used to them before it was localized. It's good you can appreciate both of them; I can only play the second game in the Japanese version, myself. I do feel that way though; I think some of the English VAs did a good job, and others were kind of hit or miss on the mark. And it does bug me to some extent that the English VAs didn't exactly know how to pronounce some of the names of the characters they were voice acting for... xD

*Japanese* - Smooth, quiet, steadfast, subtle, disturbing. (+sexy) *English* - Confident, cheerful, condescending, convicting, creepy. Yes, the English voice has less "subtlety," but that's simply because it's dubbed more like a cartoon rather than a realistic murder drama. Which, given the extravagant and distinctly anime character designs (as well as the grandiose, over-the-top hope/despair concepts), I think fits well. I like them both. But fuck Funimation Danganronpa anything tho. Holy shit. Papenbrook ain't enough to save that dumpster fire.

To the people wondering if they're the only ones who like the sarcastic English voice, you are not. For me at least, the sarcasm in the English VA gives it some of the appeal. With the way he talks you're never quite sure what his angle is or if what he's actually saying to you is on the level or if he's not trying to manipulate you and that's what makes the English VA attempt good. I don't know if Papenbrook was trying to achieve that but unintentional or not is lends to the character in a way that's different than Ogata's take. With the English VA everything comes out in almost a condescending and sarcastic tone so it seems almost like in every conversation Nagito is playing with you, even when he's saying he's inferior. Now here's where I get spoiler-y so don't read further if you don't want to. Nagito is the most manipulative person in the game short of Junko or Izuru. He's incredibly cunning and usually way farther ahead in figuring things out over the rest of his contemporaries. However in his cunning and manipulation he's not trying to seduce you into an action, no instead he's just pushing you to an end. He's an instigator trying to force you to react and in your reaction hopefully he'll get the result you want. He's not entirely sure what will happen but he just wants it to happen. Ogata's slow and methodical voice can capture a person who is a manipulator but...that's just one way to portray that. In this English version Papenbrook's is portraying that personality and someone who is unintentionally condescending because they already know pretty much everything before you really even tried. In that way he comes off as entirely patronizing because he is the purest form of that. With the condescending attitude and the sarcasm he comes off better when he disappointed in the Ultimates or you for not coming to a conclusion before him. He's basically talking down without even trying by telling your your efforts were poor and clearly you could be doing better. In this way the Papenbrook works and in SOME scenes is better.

While Bryce Papenbrook doesn't seem to be as popular the choice as Megumi Ogata, it is pretty neat to see how people can be just as passionate as for the VA that's not as typically favored. I like komaedas japanese voice better than the english, I think its because komaeda's voice is too..... promenant. I always though Komaeda would have a soft, but slighly dark voice, which his japanese voice does perfecly.

The English audio is actually really good. I think it's just a matter of which one your hear first. Like for me, I prefer the English voices of the Japanese, but that's cause I heard those before. Anyway, I would give the dub a try if you got nothing better to do

MoneybucksMovies Well you're right, I'm used to hearing Japanese and I think that most of the time (if not everytime, but that's only logical), the original dub is better since the voices match the characters perfectly (and also because I find the voice acting *way* better). I'll agree some voices in the English dub of DR2 are good, but I find it hard to appreciate Komaeda's voice especially when you compare it to the original - because I love Megumi Ogata and her works, and also because I think her breathy, cynic voice fits him better than a generic male voice. But then again, I agree it would have been different if I heard the english one first.

I absolutely concur about which one you hear first certainly puts something of a bias on your perspective. It's like a first impressions-type thing, so most of the time when people get used to the voice sounding a certain way, and then hear something that's drastically different in the other version (whether you went from hearing the sub to dub, or vice versa), it tends to be too jarring for that person. It breaks their immersion of the storyline, and I think that's ultimately the reason why people like one more than the other. I've seen really good arguments for reasons why people like either the Japanese or the English one, so it really comes down to personal preference in the end honestly. Fascinating regardless; people and their thought processes are ever so interesting to me.

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me on this but!.. I enjoy both to be quite honest. I've seen most of the game in English so I've gotten used to the Dub. However, when I find clips of the Japanese version , they sound good to me as well. I'm really not too picky! Bryce does a good job on displaying Komaeda's both somewhat sane and insane parts. He sounds more sassy and I find it cool to hear the shift in tone in the voice, while in the Japanese .. you can't really tell because the voice actor is staying on the more threatening side. And there's nothing wrong about that!! I'm one to watch both sub and dub ! I always find it exciting to know who will be voicing out who in the dub! Don't get me wrong ! I know sometimes voice actors don't go with certain characters..but that's doesn't mean the voice actor sucks! So to me.. I love the sub and dub versions!

You're all looking past the point that Komeda is around 18 and the voice actor must be in his thirties at least in the dub. In the sub he's voiced by a woman and has a far gentler voice, which perfectly matches his personality. It's just weird to have a brash English man voice someone who's helpless like him. I mean, come on, Komaeda doesn't even realise what he's saying. Ogata, his Japanese voice actress, matches it perfectly in my opinion. There's a reason the sub is so favored.

Yeah I thought I was the only one - it's actually a dub voice that I like. Throughout the whole on Danganronpa, there are a few voices which I just love to hear in English; Gundam, Souda, Nagito, Byakuya, Toko and my young smol bean Fuyuhiko (I honestly might even like his voice more in English than Japanese lol). Not saying that I necessarily prefer any of them to the Japanese, but in some instances I feel like they fit the characters in a way that makes them stand out from other anime and dubs or subs in general

So here's how the dub fucked up. The whole point of Komaeda is that he's completely radicalized the concept of hope to a point where it is twisted. The key factor however is that he believes everything that he says, and when he does and says evil or messed up things, he doesn't do or say them out of any real malice, he's just taking his ideology to it's logical conclusion. He represents a very real kind of crazy, and one that we deal with a lot in this world. In the Japanese dub, the actor speaks very slowly and softly, but otherwise delivers his lines in a straightforward manner. This is how Komaeda should sound. It's tough for me to really get into how the japanese actor performed, since I'm not japanese and can't really comment on the subtleties of the japanese language and inflections and whatnot. The english dub, however, I totally can comment on fully because I speak english and have acted in english speaking productions and have taken acting classes. So here's how they fucked up. Papenbrook's delivery is coming off as sarcastic and disingenuous. Based on his delivery alone, you'd think that Komaeda knows that what he's saying is nonsense and that he's just intentionally trying to creep everyone out, when in reality that is a categorical misunderstanding of the character. Bryce, or possibly the voice director, fucked up pretty big, here. Despite this, when played the english dub version of the game I was still able to take away what Komaeda truly was as a character because the translation was still adequate and because most of the game actually isn't voice acted, mostly just the trials and certain scenes. I never really paid any attention to the subtleties of Papenbrooks performance when compared with the japanese dub until after having beaten the game and coming back to it later.

However, there's no reason for people in the profession of localization to not strive for higher quality and understanding of the source material. On the other hand, Westernization of foreign media is a lot more important than people seem to realize.

If you prefer Megumi Ogata, I would definitely recommend downloading the VA DLC. While Papenbrook did try harder to fit Komaeda's personality in DRAE, it actually killed the immersion for me a little because of the voice actor when I played DRAE, so I think the DLC is more than worth it. Of course, that's just my opinion though.
