i assume the reason why progress is randomly very fast out of nowhere, is that he's spending most of his time actually developing the features in the update, and the level is where he toys around with what's new or just makes some building progress when he's bored.

My guess is that the spider gamemode wasn't implemented yet but he made a new placeholder portal. That's probably why he didn't build more gameplay, the portal probably didn't work yet.
