I thought it was about the Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, which Porto Alegre was one of the possible pitstops around the horn to Valparaiso Bay. From Britain, you'd cross the Atlantic and to the Caribbean north of the Doldrums, then hug the coast to keep the wind all the way down to the Horn, or some went down the Gold Coast in Africa south of the Doldrums and then crossed; either way, Brazil was a common stop along the way for provisions and to let the crew stretch their legs a bit lol. The northern Rio Grande really only has Port Isabel, and I'm not sure why a common shanty would mention a rather minor port?
@SeanDagher3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. I got it completely wrong in the description. This song is DEFINITELY about the one in Brazil, the one to the south, I think.

Sean has a super unique tone to his voice I haven't heard elsewhere. It's more apparent in the Assassin's Creed music. It's a clear yet gritty tone. Full but textured, don't know how to describe it. It's that a classical singing technique, or just the tone of his voice?

Short hauls generally have the same melody for both shantyman lines and the same refrain twice. Haul Away Joe is a good example of that, or the quicker versions of Shallow Brown (not the version I did).
