Sean, I could listen ramblings about songs and ships and language for hours, don't you worry about it! @@gregthomas5044 It's an old college textbook called "A biography of the English language" by C.M. Millward. I read it decades ago when a friend lent it to me. I recently ordered a used copy from the internet but people I gave it away so i ordered a couple more. The book reads really well cover to cover with no end of fascinating facts. Because it's a textbook, there are some graphs and lists and charts which I sometimes look at and sometimes skip over, but the whole thing is great. I put a close-up of it at the end of the video, but the covers vary depending on the edition.

This was really funny! btw I added a footnote to my PhD today wondering about just this issue, haha. Pronouncing -ly as -lye is certainly a feature of the Sussex dialect. By the 1820s at the latest, it was also associated with "jack speak"; for example, characters in novels would sometimes be portrayed as saying "earlye" and "surelye" and so on to mark them out as old sea dogs. Not sure of the connection between the two, though! For whatever it's worth, "earlye" is also the Middle English spelling.

Marvellous video, sire! Early is a very interesting word here. The -ly suffix is basically a contraction of [an earlier form] of the word "like", so it's essentially ere-like. (Gentleman-like - gentlemanly). In Old English, -ly was pronounced roughly the same way as modern English, but, the vowel shift turned the word (pronounced leek) into like. I wonder if this regular sound change affected it's successor for -ly in certain dialects. The West Country accent has some similar forms, and the accents from Bristol have a major effect on our perception of English seafarers. Just some guesses. Thank you for all the hard work.
@SeanDagher
@SeanDagher 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight. I just have a question about how "ere-" means "gentleman." i just have it meaning "soon' or "before." As for the sound change in -ly, it seems indeed that the irregularity of the change is what causes it to stand out for us.

@hostoftheseawitch3431 3 жыл бұрын
@@SeanDagher I apologise! I phrased that poorly. I just used gentleman as an example of how a random term can have the -like or -ly appended to it. Your right, of course, ere is soon or before.

I'll talk to the Red Text Dude, but his agent is a real tiger. As for rue-eye-in, I don't know. My mother, from whom I learned that song (she called it "A-roving" and the verses were different) always, always sang it with that pronunciation. Sometimes these things are started by a popular recording of the song, maybe by Berle Ives or someone, or sometimes they reflect an actual folk pronunciation. This particular case strikes me as a reaction to the spelling of the word "ruin," but that is just a wild guess.

Ah, so "the great vowel shift" is the culprit. That's why English pronunciation makes no sense to Germanic language speaking people. The old pronunciation does make sense to me, as a Dutchman.
@SeanDagher
@SeanDagher 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And because the printing press arrived in England before the GVS was really codified, we spell English the way it was pronounced 500 years ago. Crazy.
