I listened to the version of this song by The Longest Johns quite a few times. Your version seems to have a pretty different melody. Are there different versions that developed over time or is it just different artistic interpretation? Love both versions! :)
@SeanDagher3 жыл бұрын
There are lots of different versions. I think every singer takes liberties with every song so they can be drastically different.

Many of these songs were also passed along orally long before they were written down so they were not always perfectly recalled, leading to less deliberate but quite significant variations.

This particular melody is also used in Gustav Holst's "Second Suite in F" in the 1st movement, but it's subtitled as "Claudy Banks." I think most of the versions of Claudy Banks I've heard have a different melody to the words, but Julie Abbe and Eliza Carthy both use this melody with more of a jig feel.

Hadn't realised you'd recorded a version of this one - certainly does an excellent job of conveying the relative grimness of being on a ship in that area, in the latter portion of the Victorian era. Quite different to Ewan McColl's version, which I'm more used to.

Another great shanty. This is very quickly becoming a highlight of my week. Out of curiosity, one of my favorite shanties that came from the Assassin's Creed series is "Runnin' Down To Cuba" and I was wondering if that is one you might be doing in the coming weeks and if it would even fit in the style of shanties you're doing at this time. Looking forward to whatever you have lined up for next week and beyond.

I'm glad the voice-over worked. The Agnus Yards is such a cool structure, but unfortunately it has a big chain grocery store in it now. On the plus side, they left in a lot of the yards' machinery so it looks pretty cool. Other sections of the yards have been turned into condos, either using existing façades or new ones built to match, so it's a neat neighbourhood about 400m from my house so Flora and I walk through there almost every day.
