Each time I watch this video I get goosebumps. Listening to the commentary of the greatest horseracing commentator who ever lived describing the greatest racehorse who ever lived is something really special. Both Peter O'Sullevan and Sea Bird are simply incomparable.

You only have to listen to Peter O'Sullevan's voice to realise just how special this performance by Sea Bird was. Truly fantastic racehorse, the like of which we will never witness again.

Sea Bird was probably the ultimate middle distance racehorse. His spectacular turn off foot at the end of the Derby and especially here in the Arc show what a fantastic horse he was at a mile and a half. There's probably never been a stronger field for the Arc, and you must remember that the runner up Reliance was himself unbeaten till this race was beaten six lengths by Sea Bird, but he himself finished six lengths in front of the third horse and would probably have been good enough to win the race in nine years out of ten.

I guess, I some ways, Seabird and Reliance are the Turf versions of Secretariat and Sham. Both of the Runner-ups could have been champions in another year, and remembered entirely differently. They're also rated pretty identically.

This was the only occasion that Peter O'Sullevan was totally wrong in his commentary. Sea Bird was NEVER some way behind them as O'Sullevan stated. Sea Bird was in the first 6 throughout the race. There is a much clearer video of this Arc made by a Japanese film crew, and it clearly shows that Sea Bird was up with the pace throughout the race.

Not the greatest commentary by the legendary Peter O'Sullevan. He mentioned Sea Bird once at 1:40 in the video and then missed him completely until he hit the front.

You are correct. In fact, there is a much clearer Japanese video of this Arc and it shows Sea Bird in the front 5 or 6 for the last 6furlongs or so.
