Brilliant video Matt and so many important themes. For me it’s all about preparation both at home and on the beach. Keep your kit as clean as possible and in the best condition. Take things steady, so yes slow down and think. Always be in a position to change tactics and be open to trying new things. Above all, keep yourself safe, hydrated and always carry a small first aid kit!

In general I’m very organised person. On one occasion I was taking my kayak out. Got to the venue dropped the kayak at the waters edge, got everything out of my truck & put it on the kayak. Went & parked, started to walk to the kayak & thought, oh, get your paddle. Then I discovered, I’d forgotten it. I was 60 mile from home, & it was 4.30am, so there was no way I would phone my wife & ask her to bring my paddle. Stripped it down again, drove home, got the paddle, then went back. I finally got on the water at about 9.00am. Lesson learned. Always have a check list.

Crikey there’s a lesson there Ian, I used to have hand paddles in the hull of mine, not a bad second best !

@@SaltwaterAngler I had a Hobie S.O.T. Despite having everything all sitting together in the garage, lots of things used to get moved / lost when kids go rummaging through it lol. I only ever do that sort of thing once though. I’ve had mates do similar things too, so I don’t have to feel like such a muppet.

Fishing for over 50 years I STILL use a checklist. So easy to forget one vital piece of kit. 'Fish bag and hand rag' (towel)' essential! I've used tapered leaders since they were invented - before that we used to roll the leader under a sandpaper block to thin the 60 lb line. It worked but the line was a bit rough!
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Ohh yes that towel rag is often forgotten

Some great tips and I think the taking more time with everything is probably 1 of the most important , Personally I'd always use a Mono Leader no matter how strong the braid is , the braid has no give in it to soak up the cast which is turn puts lots of force on the the eye's resulting in ceramics cracking

Very true. My rod rings attest to that 🤣

Great video with useful tips thanks Matt. As you say, we often forget some of the finer points. Standing joke with a mate of mine about how long it takes me to get set up. I try to look after my gear - All of my reels have cases, and all of my rods are in the original bags, so by the time I've got set up and got a bait out, he's probably caught 4 or more fish! 😁 Stay safe & well, Dave. 🎣🎣👍👍

Hi Matt downloaded your check list and unless my eyes deceive me couldn't find BAIT. Bit of an essential that. I like the fall in bag, I always have a full change of clothes in the van as nothing worse than driving home in your skivvies.

Will be downloading your checklist, no matter how organised i think i am i still forget things. On the casting lessons, recently had a lesson with Glynn from Anglers Den, best thing i have done, i have gone from struggling to get to 75m to being able to reach 110-120 easily with a lot less effort.

60lb straight through with 10-25lb snood. No horrible shock leader knots stop using multi nearly 2 years now braid fixed spool (pair zippy M4-GT with pair Shimano Ultegra CI4)all day long for me casting distance probably the same maybe more because I’ve not got to worry about bird nest.

Hi Matt, thanks for the great video. I’m looking for rod/reel advice for targeting pollock and other species off rock marks. What’s the best setup? I have a 10ft spin rod 20-60g (which is maybe a bit too flexible), 5000 reel with 29lb braid however I’m struggling to cast well/accurately since using this new setup.
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. A lot depends on the tidal flow in your area as some rock marks require a heavier set up than here in Sussex. You loose the subtlety of a quality Lure rod at a certain point as you may need 2oz weighted lures ? So really depends where you are fishing.

Tip 9 don’t think you mention it when fishing the big tides when tides go right back look for the gullies where the fish feed and structure of the beach for future fishing trips specially the surf beaches
