Hey there Alec! Great job on this one!! BTW, one little nit-pick: the last episode with Jack Nicholson aired in 1961, not 1960.

Each episode had a Call #, a Production #, and a Release #. ZIV Productions was the first to produce films out of sequence. ZIV might have 4 or 5 episodes in production at one time and as they were finished, they were released. The release date did not necessarily correspond to the production date, in fact, it seldom did. So, for example, the 1st episode ever seen, Sixty Feet Below, was actually the 2nd one produced. The 2nd episode released (seen on TV) was the 4th one produced. In the case of the last episode, Round Up with Jack Nicholson, its Release # was 1155 which corresponds to the final episode, the 155th one. But the Production # is 152B which means that there were at least 3 other episodes in production at the same time - Roustabout #153B, Skipper #154B and PT Boat #155B. I'm assuming they released them as they were finished production but there could have been other factors that decided the release order. That process is normal now but at the time, it was confusing as heck. ZIV would shoot the land portions for several episodes in California, both on land and offshore on the boat. Then the cast would travel to Florida or the Bahamas for the underwater scenes. When they returned, the editors got busy and stitched the appropriate scenes together to make an episode. This also explains why ZIV seldom did a remake or 'second takes'. It was simply too difficult and expensive to reshoot the scenes. Remember that this was before computers, internet, email or digital film. The film had to be processed back at the studio in California before the producer or director ever saw the results. It's amazing they went together as well as they did. Take care. Alec

Fantastic information!!! That also perhaps might explain why Mark of the Octopus was first aired in the early part of 1958, even though it was shot two or three years earlier (it had a 1956 copyright date). If I’m not mistaken that was the episode that Fred Ziv and Ivan Tors presented to the networks first (and later to separate local stations) to sell the series. Also, wasn’t that episode shot originally in color? It looks that way.

Morning Alec, Catching up watching Sea Hunt while in hosp. Two episodes i have with actor Leonard Nimoy. Played a peon who helped mike counter privileged 5th column villain.. I like your passion about SCUBA, Skin Diving & Snorkeling. Your the Man especially vintage SCUBA era pre 1975. Too bad i didn't have more teachers like you in school. Had a few however most were boring or duds. I like few ZIV productions like Highway Patrol with Broderick Crawford. Be well & Hang Tuff 👍

I saw an interview with Leonard Nimoy, who talked a bid about working on Sea Hunt. He said his trick to being cast on the show so often was he changed his appearance, for example wearing an eye patch in one episode, changes in the way he spoke in others, He laughed, in saying he worked so hard to not be remembered by viewers so he could return playing a different charetor, he was almost surprised when he did become famous. He was so good at this that many shows were produced by a production company called "ZIV" and each week he went from one show to another playing a part.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Жыл бұрын
Leonard Nimoy was one of the most popular actors in Sea Hunt. He played in 8 episodes! Once Leon Benson of ZIV Studios found a good actor who would work for peanuts, he kept him busy. Only 4 other actors worked in more episodes than Leonard. And, as you say, he was a different person in each one. Commonly he was a "bad guy", whether a crook or just a nasty person, Leonard played the villain well. From his start in Sea Hunt, he went on to greater heights reaching a zenith in Star Trek. Lloyd Bridges was very influential in the choosing of actors and often met a young, aspiring actor looking for work. Lloyd would tell him to go to the studio and say "Lloyd Bridges told me to come down to work in Sea Hunt". Many of those unknown actors went on to fame - Jack Nicholson, John Anderson, Whit Bissell, Peter Breck, Jeff Bridges, Beau Bridges, Kathie Browne, Victor Buono, Robert Conrad, Cyril Delevanti, Bruce Dern, Ron Foster, Douglas Fowley, Jack Ging, Paul Guilfoyle, Larry Hagman, Myron Healey, Ted Knight, Hanna Landy, Jon Lindbergh, John Marley, Byron Morrow ..... There are many more. Many are well recognized names but simply Google any one of them to see what they did. Always good to talk to a Sea Hunt Fan. Alec

Beau Bridges was indeed in two episodes, and he played the same character, Warren Tucker, in both: "Storm Drain" (the clip shown) in 1960, and "Baby" in 1961. Jeff Bridges was in four episodes: "The Lost Ones" (1958), "The Birthday Present" (1958), "Water Nymphs" (Uncredited; 1960), and "Pirate Gold" (the clip shown; 1960).
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter5 жыл бұрын
Perfect score Brian! All correct. Did you also know that Dorothy Bridges (Lloyd's long-time wife) was in 1 episode, The Lost Ones? There were often actors who played minor roles and were not credited. And lots of stunt actors too who never got credit. Too bad. I'd like to know who they were and if still alive. Alec
