Sea Kayak Paddle | Choosing The Right One For Your Needs

It is always a joy to encounter someone who knows what he's talking about and displays great skill in plying his trade. All one needs to do to appreciate that this guy fits those descriptions is to watch these videos! I can't remember ever seeing a paddler look more naturally comfortable and in balance with his kayak! I took up sea kayaking in the mid 1970s, paddled for many years, and founded one of the first sea kayak touring companies on the East Coast in the late 1970s. I haven't paddled sea kayaks in years but I still remember enough to recognize a good paddler when I see one.

Paulo I found your channel a year ago. I bought gear labs Akiak and have never looked back. So much more control in the water ! Able to paddle further and not really even thinking about that paddling. It’s been a real game changer. My previous paddle was the Werner Kalliste. I had two of them in different lengths for my different yaks. I have 4 yaks and one paddle now. Greenland !!!!! Thank you sir !!!

A lot of what you say about the Greenland paddle equally applies to the Euro blade: Flexibility in the hips, involving the entire body in motions like forward stroke, braces and a roll, and working with, rather than a against the water are good ideas, no matter what paddle you use. I personally find a lot more support, including what you call an "instant brace", in a Euro paddle. Never felt particularly confident with the Greenland paddle I tried for almost a year. And if your Euro paddle makes a lot more noise than a Greenland paddle, enough to scare away wildlife, you are definitely doing something wrong! Same if the blade dives during your roll. While I agree with you that a Greenland paddle can be easier on the joints, the world is not quite as black and white as you paint it in this video. A Euro paddle works better for some people, and it has its place in applications like rock gardening or surfing. A number of people I know paddle both styles, depending on what they do, and thus combine the best of all worlds.

Hype ! Not ! Wait until your my age. You’ll be able to see and feel the difference ! I sold both of my Werner Kalliste touring paddles after using an Akiak GL paddle !
