for a non paying player wouldent it be better to enhance a purple version of that ship rather then a legendary, hence its easier for us to get purple, so in long term purple would be stronger?

We didn't spend on the ship. We get a legendary Warhammer from the S2 Ship Build feature. There's not much to spend on a legendary ship after you get it unless you want to enhance it. We can't enhance a purple ship, which will always be weaker than a legendary one. 😇
